He also developed the famous ward design for the city of Savannah, a design that became one of the most important planning innovations in American history. This morbid politics idealized disembodiment over embodiment, spiritual conditions over material ones, amnesia over history, and passivity over engagement. Moving from medical engravings, séances, and clairvoyant communication to Supreme Court decisions, popular literature, and physiological tracts, Necro Citizenship explores how rituals of inclusion and belonging have generated alienation and dispossession. We must give them their Bible as a literal book, until some idea of its spiritual significance is literally knocked into their materialistic sconces. But not so with the masses of religionists who cling to the Bible with uninformed reverence. Their religious nature is weak, sick, diseased.
