Book excerpt: Excerpt from Placer Mining for Gold in California The increase in the price of gold from in 1932 to in 1933 and to in 1934 made such stories seem even more plausible and helped further to stimulate the migration of men to the creeks, despite the unfortunate experiences related by most of those drifting back from the gold-bearing areas. Stories of those who succeeded in making a living and of the very few who made strikes continued to be magnified out of all proportion, both in passing from mouth to mouth and in the press, and brought new recruits to the streams as late as 1937. It is obvious to those versed in gold mining that the facts are greatly exaggerated in these stories. To the hard-pressed unemployed, however, these accounts sounded like the answer to their need. How could they know that for every one who made a strike in placer mining, tens of thousands would find little or nothing, that not more than a few score at most could possibly expect to develop a profitable lode mine, and that large amounts of capital would be required for most of these mines? The experience of the thousands who are unsuccessful in placer ing does not make news; the story of the man here and there who is lucky does. Most of the accounts were stories of success, stories which were news but which were misleading to the unemployed. The vein and mine workings are presented in section, that is, as they would appear if they were cut through along the center of the vein and one-half removed. This model is intended to illustrate the ordinary features present in some form in the great majority of all metal mines and to show the orderly manner in which mines are developed and the ores extracted. Great diversity in the nature and structure of ore deposits compels a corresponding variety in the details of workings by means of which the ores of these de posits are extracted. However diverse these details may be, they all may be grouped as parts of major features which are common to nearly all metal mines. In this respect these excavations resemble the more familiar structures on the surface. Its capital is divided into 30,000 shares of $100 each. Its business is the mining of silver and other ores, and the production of bullion in the New Territory of Arizona. The headquarters of the company are at the town of Tubac, near the overland mail route to California, by way of E1 Paso and San Diego, and accessible by a good waggon route of 157 miles in length, to the Gulf of California, at the Ports of Lobos and Libertad. The property of the company consists of a celebrated ranche, known as Arivaca or Aribac, comprising seventeen thousand acres, on which are found numerous veins of gold and silver, and it abounds in pasturage, tillable land, timber and never-failing water. This property was famous in the days of Jesuit missions. They own also the mines of the Cerro Colorado Mountains, including the famous Heintzelman mine, named in honor of Major General Heintzelman, U. S.
