  • Pages : 164 pages

Download or read book Teaching AIDS written by Marcia Quackenbush and published by ETR Associates. This book was released on 1990 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this resource guide for educators on how to teach students about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was published in 1986. Since then, basic facts about the transmission and prevention of the AIDS virus have not changed substantially. The terminologies about the disease, however, have changed and the changing terminologies (AIDS, ARC, HIV infection) are explained in the preface of this third edition. The first section of the book explains why teenagers and young adults need to be taught about AIDS and gives suggestions for using the curriculum. Methods and concepts for teaching high school students about AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are discussed and basic information on AIDS/HIV is provided. Safe and unsafe sexual activities are differentiated and a sample lecture is included. The second section provides seven teaching plans which present different approaches to teaching AIDS in the classroom. Most plans are designed to be taught in a single-session class or expanded to fill two or three sessions. The first of the plans is a basic AIDS unit and the other six are designed to be appropriate for use in different disciplines. Also included is a supplement on how the AIDS virus infects the immune system. The next section contains teaching materials, including six worksheets and an objective test. The final section contains background materials, including supplementary teaching tips, AIDS information sources, and a glossary of terms. (NB)

Book Law and American Education

Download or read book Law and American Education written by Robert Palestini and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition expands coverage on such topics as the law and students with disabilities, confidentiality, sexual harassment, student searches and tuition vouchers. It also includes some new topics such as bullying, copyright law, and the law and the internet. Both public and nonpublic school educators are aware that courts, over the last several decades, have played an increasingly significant role in defining school policy. Decisions in such areas as school desegregation, prayer, public school financing, student rights, collective bargaining, students with disabilities, sexual harassment and other personnel issues attest to the extent and importance of judicial influence. It is important, therefore, that teachers and administrators have a least a rudimentary knowledge and understanding of school law and how it affect their day-to-day classroom activities. There is a sizable body of school law with which educators should be familiar if they wish to conduct themselves in a legally acceptable manner. Those educators who “fly by the seat of their pants” may be in difficulty if sufficient thought is not given to the legal implications of their decisions and conduct. This text provides introductory material for those educators interested in K-12 educational issues, and who have little or no background or knowledge in school law. This book takes a case brief approach to the study of school law. Case briefs are the means by which students of the law summarize cases to facilitate learning and analysis. This book’s purpose is to provide those who are involved and interested in education with a rudimentary knowledge base for making educationally sound decisions within the legal framework of our nation. Having such knowledge may preclude, or at least minimize, an educator’s exposure to liability. On the other hand, this book is not intended to scare educators into inaction. Many of the most effective learning activities carry with them a certain degree of risk. Field trips and laboratory experiments come immediately to mind. The knowledge obtained from this book is not intended to end the taking of field trips and the conducting of laboratory experiments. It is intended to be a guide to conducting these valuable activities in a responsible manner that will minimize the educator’s exposure to liability.

Book AIDS

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roberta Weiner
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1986
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book AIDS written by Roberta Weiner and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special report is designed to clear up misconceptions about the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Chapter One provides the facts: how many children have AIDS, how AIDS spreads and how it doesn't spread, and who gets AIDS. While new developments occur constantly in AIDS research, experts are convinced of the central fact presented in Chapter One: AIDS is not spread by casual contact. Chapter Two describes how the AIDS crisis has affected schools thus far. It details how the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends schools handle students and employees with AIDS, and summarizes a variety of state and local responses to the disease. Chapter Three examines, in depth, how two local school districts dealt with children with AIDS, and shows how their radically different approaches produced radically different results in their communities. Chapter Four provides up-to-date information on AIDS litigation and includes predictions from attorneys about what school officials can expect next. Chapter Five explains why it is crucial to have an AIDS policy before a student or employee becomes infected with AIDS and offers step-by-step recommendations for drawing up a policy that considers school district needs. Chapter Six indicates why schools should educate their students and employees about AIDS whether or not they have an AIDS case on campus. It tells what the experts think: that schools have the power to stop the spreading of AIDS through the right kind of education. Chapter Seven reveals the unique problems colleges and universities face in dealing with AIDS. It examines what college officials and students have done to set up policies and educate their communities about AIDS. And it details the recommendations of the American College Health Association. Recommendations to help schools deal with AIDS are scattered throughout the book, and the report ends with a section of recommended actions every school administrator can take to better control the kind of impact AIDS has on his/her school. Twelve appendices provide numerous guidelines, statements, directories and other resources. (RH)
