Book Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt

Download or read book Placement and evaluation of a seal coat using emulsified asphalt written by Fred E. Atnip and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased concern for the environment and spiraling prices for petroleum products have brought about an increased interest in the use of emulsified asphalts in highway construction. This emphasis has been primarily in the construction of chip seals using emulsions. In order to assess design and construction procedures, as well as roadway performance, an experimental emulsified asphalt seal coat was placed in Texas. The material selected for the chip seal was a CRS-2 emulsified asphalt with a design rate of emulsion at .35 - 40 gallons/square yard. The aggregate was Type B, Grade 4A, at a coverage rate of 1 cubic yard per 110-120 yard of surface. This report describes the construction procedures, material costs, energy consumption and savings, and performance of the section to date.

Book Evaluation of Modified Single Seal Surface Treatments

Download or read book Evaluation of Modified Single Seal Surface Treatments written by G. W. Maupin and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes a field study of a multicourse asphalt emulsion chip seal, designated as a modified single seal. The treatment, already used in North Carolina, consists of an application of emulsion and coarse aggregate followed by another application of emulsion and a final layer of fine aggregate. Sixty sections were placed in three districts in 1986-88, totaling approximately 400 lane-km of surfacing. These sections were evaluated periodically by a team of local operations personnel and research staff. The operations personnel also provided estimates of service life. for conventional single chip seals, used for a cost-benefit analysis. The modified seals performed better and were more cost-effective than conventional surface treatments. Also, the hazard of broken windshields caused by loose aggregate was virtually eliminated on the modified seal treatments. The report includes recommendations for ensuring that the final product is of high quality. The recommendations include using a pilot vehicle, limiting the speed of construction traffic, using clean dry blot aggregate, applying the coarse aggregate not more than one stone thick, and using the proper nozzles on the asphalt distributor.

Book Performance Evaluation of Seal Coat Materials and Designs

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Seal Coat Materials and Designs written by Jusang Lee and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2011-03-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project presents an evaluation of seal coat materials and design method. The primary objectives of this research are 1) to evaluate seal coat performance from various combinations of aggregates and emulsions in terms of aggregate loss; 2) to evaluate how the properties of aggregates and emulsions affect seal coat performance; 3) to evaluate current seal coat design methods based on INDOT seal coat practice; and 4) to develop seal coat design software incorporating Indiana practice. To evaluate the effects of aggregate and emulsion types on aggregate loss performance of seal coat, three emulsions and eight aggregates including CRS-2P, RS-2P, and AE-90S for emulsions and Trap Rock, Sandstone, Blast Furnace Slag, Steel Slag, Limestone, Dolomite, Crushed Gravel (one face), and Crushed Gravel (two faces) were tested utilizing the sweep test and Vialit test. In addition, to explore influential factors (i.e., electrical surface charge interaction, water evaporation change in emulsion, water affinity of aggregate, etc.), the Zeta potential, water content, and X-ray deflection (XRD) tests were also conducted.

Book Laboratory Study of Slurry Seal Coats

Download or read book Laboratory Study of Slurry Seal Coats written by D. Y. Lee and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive programmed laboratory tests involving some 400 asphalt emulsion slurry seals (AESS) were conducted. Thirteen aggregates including nine Iowa sources, a quartzite, a synthetic aggregate (Haydite), a limestone stone from Nebraska, and a Chat aggregate from Kansas were tested in combination with four emulsions and two mineral fillers, resulting in a total of 40 material combinations. A number of meetings were held with the Iowa DOT engineers and 12 state highway departments that have had successful slurry seal experiences and records, and several slurry seal contractors and material and equipment suppliers were contacted. Asphalt emulsion slurry seal development, uses, characteristics, tests, and design methods were thoroughly reviewed in conjunction with Iowa's experiences through these meetings and discussions and through a literature search (covering some 140 articles and 12 state highway department specifications). It was found that, while asphalt emulsion slurry seals (when properly designed and constructed) can economically improve the quality and extend the life of existing pavement surface, experiences with them had been mixed due to the many material, slurry, and construction variables that affect their design, construction, and performance. The report discusses those variables identified during the course of the project and makes recommendations concerning design procedures, design criteria, specifications and the means of evaluating them.

Book Numerical Simulation and Laboratory Testing Verification on the Performance of an Asphalt Pavement Seal Coat with Superficially Permeating and Solidifying Properties

Download or read book Numerical Simulation and Laboratory Testing Verification on the Performance of an Asphalt Pavement Seal Coat with Superficially Permeating and Solidifying Properties written by Hehao Liang and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, preventive maintenance has been used widely to solve the problem of early-stage asphalt pavement damage. However, conventional preventive maintenance treatments cannot effectively prevent rutting or damage resulting from the leakage of diesel fuel to the pavement. In this context, numerical simulations of uniaxial penetration tests were conducted with the Discrete Element Model to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of pavement surface solidification with a special seal coat. Standard viscosity tests on mixtures of waterborne epoxy resin and emulsified asphalt used as the Permeating and Solidifying Seal Coat (PSSC) material were performed, and uniaxial penetration tests and accelerated loading tests were conducted on asphalt mixture specimens with and without the PSSC. The optimum proportion of PSSC material was determined and its permeability, rutting resistance, diesel fuel corrosion resistance, and durability were evaluated. The results of this study indicate that the superficially solidified pavement with PSSC can effectively enhance rutting resistance and diesel fuel corrosion resistance and can provide more durable skid resistance and better antistripping performance than conventional preventive maintenance treatments. Therefore, the PSSC could be considered a new generation of preventive maintenance treatments for asphalt pavements.

Book Chip Seal Best Practices

Download or read book Chip Seal Best Practices written by Douglas D. Gransberg and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2005 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 342: Chip Seal Best Practices examines ways to assist in the development and implementation of pavement preservation programs by identifying the benefits of using chip seal as part of a preventive maintenance program and by highlighting advanced chip seal programs in use around the world. The report includes approximately 40 best practices in the areas of chip seal design methods, contract administration, equipment practices, construction practices, and performance measures. According to the report, the increased use of chip seals for maintenance can be a successful, cost-effective way of using preventive maintenance to preserve both low-volume and higher-volume pavements.
