It is believed that, if this subject is to con tribute to the professional equipment of the teacher, its material must be selected with reference to his specific needs. Antiquarian interests and encyclopaedic complete ness are alluring and may in their place prove praise Worthy and valuable, but they do not in themselves supply any definite demand in the training of teachers. The greatest services that the History of Education can perform for the teacher are to impel him to analyze his problems more completely and to throw light upon the school practices with which he is himself concerned. By presenting a series of clear-cut views of past conditions, often in marked contrast to his own, it should make him conscious that the present educational situation has to a large degree been traditionally received, and it should at the same time especially help him to understand the origin and significance of current practices. In this way a study of the History of Education will disrupt the teacher's complacent acceptance of the pres ent, and will enable him to reconstruct his ideas in the light of the peculiar conditions out of which the educa tion of his times has sprung. Such a view of history cannot, however, be advantageously given in a single course, but requires two or three years of consecutive study. If our students brought' to college any such acquaintance with the field of history as is possessed by the graduates of German gymnasia or French lyce'es, they might profitably begin at once with more intensive courses, but such, unfortunately, is far from being the case. In spite of the rapid advances in historical instruction in schools, it still remains true that the average freshman carries with him but a small viaticum of historical knowledge or training, and that his acquaintance with the world's history must for the most part still be gained in college. A general view of the development of civilized life is what he has the right, first of all, to demand, only this must not be so rapid as to render impossible any real under standing of the times studied. The first four chapters trace the legislative control that has been exerted in all periods of our history, beginning with the educational enactments of the early colonies and following the development of the curriculum to the present time. Such statutory control falls into fairly definite periods. The first embraces the earliest statutes relating to public education. During this period history was introduced into the school curriculum as a separate subject specified by law. The next stage, 1860 to 1900, was characterized by the influences set in motion by the Civil War and the Economic Revolution. In the years from 1900 to 1917, the history curriculum reflected the new interest of the American people in the social and economic conditions that had developed. He was fourteen years old but small in stature. At times his face was radiant with boyish joy; at other times his face bore the serious demeanor of a judge. Bobby was one of the very first to reach the playground at recess time. After recess he was among the first to open his books for study. He played with those younger than himself because the younger ones played the more. In the classroom he worked with those older than himself because with these his good mind had more companionship. He was punctual, regular, and reliable in both work and play. But before the close of the year a marked change took place in Bobby. He played less and studied less. Something was wrong with the boy - or with the school. As his teacher, I had come directly from a classical college. I required all my students to take Latin and mathematics. English grammar and history also were emphasized. Hard work and vigorous drill characterized my school policy. I wondered what caused the change in Bobby. One day three of my grade teachers reported to me that Fred, known in the school and in the town as "the worst boy in school," had been asked by Bobby to join his gang. He declined, saying that that gang was too bad for him. My Bobby's gang too bad for Fred? Thus through Fred it was discovered that Bobby was the leader of a gang which had as one of its purposes: How to make swearing easy. These boys held regular and irregular meetings in a little covered bridge near the pastor's house. There they exercised in their self-chosen art. Explanation of the changed attitude of my favorite student was now clear. The usual play at recess had not provided the needed activity. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

C., Dec. 31, 1890 It may be doubted whether among the one hundred and eighty non-catholic colleges of America out of the two hun dred and ten which I am considering, there are a score that Offer the student as condensed and effective a statement re specting Luther and his work, as this which is presented to the average student Of the thirty Catholic colleges. The seventh class, which do not in any way touch Bible or church history, is composed mainly of colleges supported by the State. In five or six instances the State schools, supported by the United States grant, are practically in union with colleges of independent or denominational Char acter, as, for example, Brown, Dartmouth, Amherst, Yale, and Cornell. It is a noteworthy fact that in the most of such cases, while the authorities of the regular college Offer something of Bible study to their students, they seem to feel under obligation to eliminate from the curriculum of the students in the school Of science any study that pertains in any way to the Christian Church or religion. Brown University seems to be an exception, in that it requires the study of the evidences Of Christianity from Seniors, without reference to the particular course of study pursued.
