Download or read book The Placenames of Scotland written by Iain Taylor and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2020-09-24 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placenames are a constant source of debate. Who was Edwin, whose name is said to live on in that of Scotland's capital city? Are the 'drum' and 'chapel' still to be found in Drumchapel? And which 'king' had a 'seat' in Kingseat in Perthshire? The answers to these and many similar questions are often not what might be expected at first sight and have their origins in many languages – including Gaelic, Pictish, Brythonic, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, Scots and Modern English – that have been spoken in Scotland. This is the essential companion to the fascinating world of Scottish placenames. It features more than 8,000 placenames, from districts, towns and villages to rivers, lochs and mountains, and also includes a comprehensive introduction and maps.
Download or read book The Concise Dictionary of World Place Names written by John Everett-Heath and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 1575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every populated place, however small, has a name, and every name is chosen for a reason. This fascinating dictionary gives the history, meanings, and origin of an enormous range of country, region, island, city, and town names from across the world, as well as the name in the local language. It also includes key historical facts associated with many place names. Place-names are continually changing. New names are adopted for many different reasons such as invasion, revolution, and decolonization. This dictionary includes selected former names, and, where appropriate, some historical detail to explain the transition. The names of places often offer a real insight into the places themselves, revealing religious and cultural traditions, the migration of peoples, the ebb and flow of armies, the presence of explorers, local languages, industrial developments and topography. Superstition and legend can also play a part. All this fascinating detail is included in the Concise Dictionary of World Place Names. In addition to the entries themselves, the dictionary includes two appendices: a glossary of foreign word elements which appear in place names and their meanings, and a list of personalities and leaders from all over the world who have influenced the naming of places. Containing over 10,000 names, from Aachen to Zyrardów, this is a unique and fascinating guide for geographers, travellers, and all with an interest in current world affairs.

Download or read book The Place Names of Stirlingshire Classic Reprint written by James Brown Johnston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place Names of Stirlingshire The first edition of this little book was very limited, and was all sold out within six weeks. The writer is grateful for the very kindly and appreciative way in which it was received both by the press as a whole, and by private readers. But the first edition had many imperfections, and the writer is glad to have the Opportunity of presenting his work in this much enlarged and improved form. The Introduction has been carefully revised, but the chief alterations and additions will be found in the appended List of Names. In its revision the writer has drawn largely from the Valuation Roll, and has enjoyed the skilled assistance of Mr. John Cameron, of Ullapool, a Gaelic scholar of repute, who has helped him to adjust not a few grammatical nice ties, which vexed the righteous soul of the scholarly Gael; but for all Opinions expressed in this book the writer alone is responsible. It should also be understood that sometimes, of set purpose, he has not spelt Gaelic names as they would be spelt to-day, because it seemed evident that, in some cases, things have changed in the 500 or 600 years which have passed since Gaelic ceased to be spoken in the most of Stirlingshire.
