Download or read book The Japanese Language in the Pacific Region written by Daniel Long and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-16 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long and Imamura examine language contact phenomena in the Asia Pacific region in the context of early 20th-century colonial history, focusing on the effects the Japanese language continues to have over island societies in the Pacific. Beginning in the early 20th century when these islands were taken over by the Japanese Empire and continuing into the 21st century, the book examines 5,150 Japanese-origin loanwords used in 14 different languages. It delves into semantic, phonological, and grammatical changes in these loanwords that form a fundamental part of the lexicons of the Pacific Island languages, even now in the 21st century. The authors examine the usage of Japanese kana for writing some of the local languages and the pidginoid phenomena of Angaur Island. Readers will gain a unique understanding of the Japanese language’s usage in the region from colonial times through the post-war period and well into the current century. Researchers, students, and practitioners in the fields of sociolinguistics, language policy, and Japanese studies will find this book particularly useful for the empirical evidence it provides regarding language contact situations and the various Japanese language influences in the Asia Pacific region. The authors also offer accompanying e-resources that help to further illustrate the examples found in the book.

Download or read book Tourism Spaces written by Alan A. Lew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographic space is a fundamental and essential construct of the physical reality within which we live, move, and construct our world. Through space we create ‘others’ (anything that is any distance from ‘us’) and we experience time (by moving from one place point to another). Because it is so fundamental to our experience, we often take geographic space for granted. Tourism Spaces: Environments, Locations, and Movements shows some of the ways that geographers and other social scientists bring spatial considerations to the forefront of our research and understanding of tourism. This is seen through the spatial arrangements and distributions of tourism phenomena, such as attractions, destinations, and in the spatial behaviour of tourists themselves. Today, these spatial arrangements and patterns are increasingly being captured, analysed, and understood through various forms of formal and informal digital data. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Download or read book Blaming the Jews written by Bernard Harrison and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years Western countries have seen a proliferation of antisemitic material in social media, and attacks on Jews such as that on the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018. Much of this has stemmed, not from personal hostility to Jews on the part of this or that individual, but from a resurgence in groups at both ends of politics of the ancient delusion that "the Jews" collectively dominate world affairs and lie at the root of all the world's evils. In Blaming the Jews author Bernard Harrison, offers a new and unique analysis of this second and far more dangerous form of antisemitism and its persistence as a cultural phenomenon. Questioning the assumption that antisemitism affects or targets only Jews, he demonstrates that, allowed to go unrecognised or unchecked, antisemitism is potentially damaging to us all. In a world where rhetoric is fashioned on stereotypes and driven by political ideology, Harrison argues it is our responsibility to be vigilant in exposing the delusions of antisemitism and their consequences for Jews and non-Jews alike.
