Book excerpt: When compiling the short-title catalogue of books printed in the sixteenth-century northern Netherlands from 1541 to 1600, Paul Valkema Blouw was confronted with a large number of ‘problem cases’, such as anonymously and/or surreptitiously printed editions, fictitious printers and undated or falsely dated printed works. By minutely analysing the typefaces, initials, vignettes and other ornaments used, drawing from his extensive knowledge of secondary literature, archival information and his unrivalled typographic memory, he not only managed to attribute a surprising number of these publications to a printer, but also could establish the period of time in which, as well as the places where, they must have been printed. These findings and the ways in which they were reached are described in the present collection of papers. In so doing, he demonstrates how silk, a resource crucial to state revenue and the only commodity to span Iran's entire economic activity, was integral to aspects of late Safavid society, including its approach to commerce, export routes and, importantly, to the political and economic problems which contributed to its collapse in the early 1700s. In a challenge to traditional scholarship, the author argues that despite the introduction of a maritime, western-dominated channel, Iran's traditional land-based silk export continued to expand right up to the end of the seventeenth century. The starting-point actually was Danish. Having treated the history of the Danish Asiatic Company during the period 1732-1772 I went abroad in order to familiarize myself with the background to the reorganization of Danish trade about 1732. It was especially the possible connexion with the dissolved Ostend Company and the counter-measures, diplomatic as well as economic, of the Dutch, English, and French companies that interested me. Through these investigations I got acquainted with the various Northwest European company records and soon realized that the Dutch archives offered a rich material, especially as regards quantities and prices. A study on the Dutch Company's trade in Japanese copper, a subject which had previously occupied Scandinavian historians in con nexion with the question of the status of Swedish copper on the European market in the 17th century, amplified my knowledge of the archives in the Hague to such a degree that I dared to tackle the greater object of giving a description of the Company's trade as a whole during its heyday. On various points it proved to be necessary to make comparative in vestigations, especially in the English East India Company's archives in London.

It emerged to stabilize monarchy from dynastic insecurity and constrain it to protect the rule of law, subjects, and their lives and property. Against this background, Lutheran and neo-Aristotelian notions on the spiritual and material welfare of subjects dominating German debate interacted with Western European arguments against 'despotism' to protect the lives and property of subjects. The combined result of this interaction under the impact of the Thirty Years War was Seckendorff's Der Deutsche Fürstenstaat (1656), constraining the evil machinations of princes and organizing the detailed administration of life in the tradition of German Policey, and which founded a specifically German notion of the modern state as comprehensive provision of services to its subjects.
