Book One Place after Another

Download or read book One Place after Another written by Miwon Kwon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s. Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing commodification of art and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy and universality. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as site-specific art intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, and public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work and its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of unrepeatability and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged by new models of site specificity and changes in institutional and market forces. One Place after Another offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Donald Judd, Renee Green, Suzanne Lacy, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Richard Serra, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and Fred Wilson.

Book Art in Chicago

  • Author : Maggie Taft
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2018-10-10
  • ISBN : 022616831X
  • Pages : 441 pages

Download or read book Art in Chicago written by Maggie Taft and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades now, the story of art in America has been dominated by New York. It gets the majority of attention, the stories of its schools and movements and masterpieces the stuff of pop culture legend. Chicago, on the other hand . . . well, people here just get on with the work of making art. Now that art is getting its due. Art in Chicago is a magisterial account of the long history of Chicago art, from the rupture of the Great Fire in 1871 to the present, Manierre Dawson, László Moholy-Nagy, and Ivan Albright to Chris Ware, Anne Wilson, and Theaster Gates. The first single-volume history of art and artists in Chicago, the book—in recognition of the complexity of the story it tells—doesn’t follow a single continuous trajectory. Rather, it presents an overlapping sequence of interrelated narratives that together tell a full and nuanced, yet wholly accessible history of visual art in the city. From the temptingly blank canvas left by the Fire, we loop back to the 1830s and on up through the 1860s, tracing the beginnings of the city’s institutional and professional art world and community. From there, we travel in chronological order through the decades to the present. Familiar developments—such as the founding of the Art Institute, the Armory Show, and the arrival of the Bauhaus—are given a fresh look, while less well-known aspects of the story, like the contributions of African American artists dating back to the 1860s or the long history of activist art, finally get suitable recognition. The six chapters, each written by an expert in the period, brilliantly mix narrative and image, weaving in oral histories from artists and critics reflecting on their work in the city, and setting new movements and key works in historical context. The final chapter, comprised of interviews and conversations with contemporary artists, brings the story up to the present, offering a look at the vibrant art being created in the city now and addressing ongoing debates about what it means to identify as—or resist identifying as—a Chicago artist today. The result is an unprecedentedly inclusive and rich tapestry, one that reveals Chicago art in all its variety and vigor—and one that will surprise and enlighten even the most dedicated fan of the city’s artistic heritage. Part of the Terra Foundation for American Art’s year-long Art Design Chicago initiative, which will bring major arts events to venues throughout Chicago in 2018, Art in Chicago is a landmark publication, a book that will be the standard account of Chicago art for decades to come. No art fan—regardless of their city—will want to miss it.

Book An Expressionist in Paris

Download or read book An Expressionist in Paris written by Norman L. Kleeblatt and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born near Minsk in White Russia, the painter Chaim Soutine (1894-1943) created his major works in France between the two World Wars. He is identified with the School of Paris, the group of artists, many of them foreign-born and Jewish, who lived and worked in the French capital between the wars. Known as a "painter's painter", Soutine worked with unreserved gesture and emotion, using exuberant color, thickly applied paint, and sweeping brushwork. Chaim Soutine is a comprehensive, ground-breaking book that rediscovers this important artist, providing an overview of his life, work, and aesthetic influence, as well as his critical reception. Essays by leading scholars and curators assess Soutine's art from new vantage points, including the changing critical reception of his work in Paris between the wars, as well as in the US and France in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust. The essays also examine the influence of Soutine's Jewish and French immigrant background on his work and reception, and introduce us to his important patrons and major collectors. These included Albert Barnes, the famous Philadelphia collector, who discovered Soutine's work in 1922-23 and purchased 52 of his paintings. The book features presentations and information never published before, including a photo-essay composed of rare photographs of the artist, newly discovered correspondence between Soutine and the French art historian Elie Faure, and the first radiographic analysis of the artist's work, which brings to light new evidence about Soutine's use of materials and his process of painting.

Book excerpt: The Teachings of The Order of Christian Mystics expound an all-inclusive Cosmic Philosophy. COMING WORLD CHANGES A rational summary of the many recent prophecies as to world cataclysms, the value of such prophecies, and the scientific and philosophic principles underlying such cyclic changes in the earth's surface. Not a pessimistic, hopeless and fear-producing volume, but presenting the underlying principles of the changes, and a definite remedy for shortening "the days of tribulation." What but the dawn of the new Age of Light, the great Aquarian Age, when the Sign of the Son of Man shall reign in heaven; when the ancient priesthood shall be gathered from the Four Winds again to receive the an-cient wisdom of the Spiritual Sun direct from its Infinite Source and give it forth that its rays of Divine Truth may again illumine the minds and warm the hearts of mankind. All spiritual prophecies have two aspects: individual and collective. They are first fulfilled in the individual hearts and lives of the few who can grasp their inner meaning, and then, as such individuals become more and more numerous, they make it possible for the prophecies to be fulfilled for a whole nation, a Race and finally for all mankind. Thus far only individually has this spiritual realization prophesied by the angelic host been fulfilled. For mankind has never yet collectively realized its common origin in the Divine, and hence its essential spiritual brotherhood. Only the realization of this brotherhood can bring about the peace and good-will so long promised by the heavenly host." Contents -Prophecies of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. -Geological Consider-ations, the scientific aspect. -The Philosophy of Planetary Changes such as sank Atlantis, etc. -The King of the World and the predicted Asiatic invasion of Europe. -The Heart of the World. The relation of America to world conditions. -The Battle of Armageddon. Psychic factors in the World War, etc. -The Remedy. Based on scientific psychological principles.
