Book excerpt: Excerpt from Piscataquis County Historical Society: Its by-Laws and Membership, Etc;, And a Bibliography of Piscataquis County Twenty men, residents of Piscataquis County, met in the Law Library at the Court House Tuesday afternoon, April 7, 1908, at the call of Judge Edgar Crosby Smith to consider the matter of organizing an historical society for Piscataquis County. Mr. Smith called the meeting to order and John l'rancis Sprague was made chairman and Francis C. Peaks, secretary. Remarks were made by several ->ersons and as the sentiment was unanimous in favor of a society it was voted to organize the Piscataquis County Historical Society, and the following named officers were elected: President, John Francis Sprague; recording secretary, Francis C. Peaks; corresponding secretary, Edgar Crosby Smith: treasurer, Liston P. Evans. The first standing committee were the president ex-officio; Wainwright Cushing, Foxcroft; Henry Hudson, Guilford: James E. Bigney, Greenville; Jonathan A. Chase, Sebec. It was voted that any records, papers, curiosities or antiques that may come into the possession of the society shall be deposited in the Thompson Free Library. This Society was incorporated under the provisions of Chapter 57, Revised Statutes of Maine (1908), at a meeting held in Dover, Maine, January 7, 1909. It is a partial history of some who have been distinguished in public life in the Pine Tree State, and who have abided in Piscataquis County and helped to make its history during a generation that is rapidly passing from earthly view. They were men of strong personalities and have made an indelible impress upon the community. With the exception of what is said of Hiram Stevens Maxim, the subjects of these sketches have all departed the scenes of this life and entered upon that "Sleep that no pain shall wake." They were nearly all my friends and associates when in earth life and this has been to me a pleasant though somewhat sad duty.
