Book Challenging Education s Function

Download or read book Challenging Education s Function written by Jim Dueck and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-02-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education occurs in a complex environment now confronted by many social issues, and who is ultimately responsible for a child’s education is the fundamental issue. This book’s purpose establishes how parents and not the state wear this responsibility, and how they must consider and navigate through multiple factors in their choice. Political differences are ever-present in America’s culture. The current climate accentuates clashing perspectives involving race, religion and individualism. While many solutions for improving educational outcomes are proposed, political obstacles appear insurmountable. An apolitical strategy providing evidence for large-scale student success culminates this review.

Book Inequality in Key Skills of City Youth

Download or read book Inequality in Key Skills of City Youth written by Stephen Lamb and published by American Educational Research Association. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking research volume addresses the topic of educational inequality from a global perspective. It includes 16 chapters from an international group of scholars who examine how well city school systems from around the world are preparing young people, particularly poor and minority students, with the skills they will need for further study, work, and life overall. While skills in key domains such as science, math, language, and civics have been center stage in international comparisons, there has been growing recognition of the effects that education has on the development of broader sets of capabilities such as social and emotional skills (also known as “noncognitive” or “21st-century” skills) that can affect the success of students in school and beyond. This volume aims to address the shortage of international data on the wide range of skills that students need to learn, enabling researchers to compare the types and causes of educational inequality in skills within and between cities.

Book Assessing Contexts of Learning

Download or read book Assessing Contexts of Learning written by Susanne Kuger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together educational effectiveness research and international large-scale assessments, demonstrating how the two fields can be applied to inspire and improve each other, and providing readers direct links to instruments that cover a broad range of topics and have been shown to work in more than 70 countries. The book’s initial chapters introduce and summarize recent discussions and developments in the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of international large-scale context assessments and provide an outlook on possible future developments. Subsequently, three thematic sections – “Student Background”, “Outcomes of Education Beyond Achievement”, and “Learning in Schools” – each present a series of chapters that provide the conceptual background for a wide range of important topics in education research, policy, and practice. Each chapter defines a conceptual framework that relates recent findings in the educational effectiveness research literature to current issues in education policy and practice. These frameworks were used to develop interesting and relevant indicators that may be used for meaningful reporting from international assessments, other cross-cultural research, or national studies. Using the example of one particular survey (the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2015)), this volume links all theoretical considerations to fully developed questionnaire material that was field trailed and evaluated in questionnaires for students and their parents as well as teachers and principals in their schools. The primary purposes of this book are to inform readers about how education effectiveness research and international large-scale assessments are already interacting to inform research and policymaking; to identify areas where a closer collaboration of both fields or input from other areas could further improve this work; to provide sound theoretical frameworks for future work in both fields; and finally to relate these theoretical debates to currently available and evaluated material for future context assessments.

Download or read book Leadership in Action written by Jim Dueck and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines how administrators in our school system can move from managerial efforts to leadership functions. Identifying taxpayers as the school systems’ foremost client presents leaders with the critical perspective for ensuring accountability. Government is the taxpayers’ servant and act as managers of educational funding and programs, and is supported by administrators working in schools, districts and regional offices. A key understanding is that school is a student’s place of work, and current processes for evaluating and reporting their progress identifies them as the most accountable workers in our culture. Taxpayers are better served when educators and government are held accountable by similar assessment processes. Accountability is enhanced when power for selecting teachers and schools is shifted from administrators to parents, and quantifiable information provides the basis for these decisions. Ensuring that students have their learning assessed consistently guarantees fairness to students and provides critical information for parents and taxpayers. Proven leadership strategies for ensuring accountability and superior levels of performance are presented for each administrative level.
