Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Electricity, or Short Lives of the Great Electricians In referring to the leading discoveries of these illus trions men, an attempt has been made to describe them in a simple manner, so as to be understood by the untechnical reader. It is worthy of note that seven of these great investigators, that is, the majority, were disposed to cultivate the art of poetry. All of them pursued their experiments with the simple object of arriving at the truth, not on purpose to enrich themselves, but in the certain hope of assisting their fellow-men. Book Lives of the Electricians

Download or read book Lives of the Electricians written by William Tulloch Jeans and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Electricians: Professors Tyndall, Wheatstone, and Morse, First Series Although this work is the first of its kind relating to electricians, its design is neither novel nor tentative. Its object is not only to give a popular account of the most memorable achievements of those men who have succeeded in evolving the laws of electricity, but to convey to unscientific readers some knowledge of the nature of those laws, and the means by which they have been applied to the purposes of man. In some senses electrical science and its practical applications might be described as the creation of the present century; and the author has been encouraged to adopt this method of giving a popular account of the great and useful work that our electricians have done by the success of a similar work dealing, in like manner, with the men and the inventions that have multiplied and cheapened the production and use of the most useful of metals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Electricians: Professors Tyndall, Wheatstone, and Morse Think of this; much lies in it. The Vatican is great; yet poor to Chimborazo or the Peak of Teneriffe; its dome is but the foolish chip of an egg-shell, compared with that star-fretted dome where Arcturus and Orion glance for ever; which latter notwithstanding who looks at? The biographic interest is wanting: no Michael Angelo was He who built that 'temple of Immensity therefore do we, pitiful Littlenesses as we are, turn rather to wonder and to worship in the little toy-box of a Temple built by our like. Now it has been well observed that science is to the present age what art was to the middle ages; and such being the case, may not a similar interest to that described by Carlyle attach to the marvellous things done by means of electricity? A great deal is said about electricity, but very little about the men who made it subject to the will of man, who converted it into the pulse of speech which annihilates time and space, and who made it the greatest blessing that science has given to civilisation. Of them it has often been said that their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world, but of their lives not much has been communicated to the general public in a popular form. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Makers of Electricity This volume represents an effort in the direction of what may be called the biographical history of electricity. The controlling idea in its preparation was to provide brief yet reasonably complete sketches of the lives of the great pioneer workers in electricity, the ground-breaking investigators who went distinctly beyond the bounds of what was known before their time, not merely to add a fringe of information to previous knowledge, but to make it easy for succeeding generations to reach conclusions in electrical science that would have been quite impossible until their revealing work was done. The lives of these men are not only interesting as scientific history, but especially as human documents, showing the sort of men who are likely to make great advances in science and, above all, demonstrating what the outlook of such original thinkers was on all the great problems of the world around us. In recent times, many people have come to accept the impression that modern science leads to such an exclusive occupation with things material, that scientists almost inevitably lose sight of the deeper significance of the world of mystery in which humanity finds itself placed on this planet. The lives of these great pioneers in electricity, however, do not lend the slightest evidence in confirmation of any such impression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electricity in the Service of Man, Vol. 1: A Popular and Practical Treatise on the Applications of Electricity to Modern Life; The History and Principles of Electrical Science Early History Of Magnetism - Nothing certain is known about the exact period when the compass was brought to Europe. We find in a piece of poetry called La Bible, composed by Guyot de Provins, dated 1190, some lines to the effect that sailors consulted the magnetic needle when bad weather set in. Jacques de Vitry, in his Historia Naturalis (1215 mentions the magnetic needle as being at that time no longer a novelty. The first European who took into account the declinations of the needle was probably Christopher Columbus. Its deflection from the due north had been previously attributed to the incorrect construction of the instrument. Variations in the deflection of the needle at the same place were first noticed by Henry Gellibrand in the year 1634. Book The Story of Electricity Vol 1

Download or read book The Story of Electricity Vol 1 written by T. Commerford Martin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 924 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Electricity, Vol. 1: A Popular and Practical Historical Account of the Establishment and Wonderful Development of the Electrical Industry Hence the Editors of the story OF electricity take especial pleasure, pride and satisfaction in recording and ar ranging in an historical review the salient facts regarding an industry with which they have been actively connected since youth. The Editors were both, for many years, electrical journalists whose daily work brought them into close contact with all but the very earliest pioneers in the telegraphic art. Acquaintance and friendship with the leading men of the industry during the past thirty five years has enabled them, in the majority of instances, to secure accurate data regarding important events from the actual creators of the art or participants in those events. Suggestions that such a work should be prepared have been repeatedly made, and they feel that they are meeting a long recognized necessity for such an addition to the permanent literature of invention and industry. This history is written in the language of the layman, while at the same time its technical truth will satisfy the scientist. It is thus possible to present an historical narrative at once accurate and authoritative, as well as one thoroughly permeated with that most desirable quality, human interest. The personal sketches have been prepared with the utmost care, and no efforts have been spared to secure authentic portraits of the prominent members of thisgreat industry, both of the past and the present day. Contained within the covers of this volume, the casual reader or the student in search of information will find not only the facts he is seeking, but at the same time he may, by consulting the index, turn to portraits and reliable biographies of the men concerned in the events described. Electricity in its manifold applica tions is so large a factor in the comfort and con venience Of our daily life, SO essential to the industrial organization which embraces every dweller in a civilized land, so important in the development and extension of civilization itself, that a knowledge of its principles and the means through which they are directed to the service of mankind should be a part Of the mental equip ment of everyone who pretends to education in its truest sense. Let anyone stop to consider how he individually would be affected if all elec trical service were suddenly to cease, and he cannot fail to appreciate the claims of electricity to attentive study. Book Derivation of Practical Electrical Units

Download or read book Derivation of Practical Electrical Units written by F. B. Badt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Derivation of Practical Electrical Units: With Twelve Illustrations The matter contained in the following pages is, in the main, a reprint of articles published in the western electrician. This little book is issued in response to a general demand that the articles be printed in such form that they might be available for ready reference. The biographies of the eminent physicists, whose names have been selected to designate the practical electrical units, comprehend much that is most inter esting and most important in the history of electrical science. The preparation of the brief sketches and the obtainment of the ac com panying portraits involved no little labor on part of lieut. F. B. Badt, who compiled the matter in the first instance. The work was undertaken, however, as the desirability of rendering the information easily accessible seemed so apparent. Prof. H. S. Carhart's valuable article relating to the modifications to which several of the electrical units are subject is included in the little volume.
