Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Revisiting the National Socialist Legacy

Download or read book Revisiting the National Socialist Legacy written by Oliver Rathkolb and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1990s, political, legal, and historical debates about Nazi theft and confiscation of property, the use of slave labor during World War II, and restitution and compensation have reemerged. Revisiting the National Socialist Legacy presents completely new historical research on these issues conducted worldwide. This volume responds to concern about Holocaust era assets in Europe, the United States, and Latin America. It focuses on both reexamination of the history of National Socialist property theft and employment of forced labor in the wartime economy, and the compensation and restitution solutions advanced in various European and Latin American countries since 1945. While the question of Nazis in exile and the memories of survivors are explored, attention is focused on the role of numerous historical commissions and the tension between judicial processes, media coverage, historical scholarship, and politics. The book is divided into five parts: "At the Nexus of Justice, Media Coverage, Historical Scholarship and Politics"; "Commissioned History"; "Research on Slave and Forced Labor"; "National Socialist Theft: Banking, Industry, Insurance and Works of Art"; and "History as Catharsis." "[A]n excellent volume. It shows the wisdom of creating the national historical commission such as CEANA in Argentina, established in part as a national response to the two major bombings of Jewish institutions in the country. Clearly these commissions have led to the examination of archives that otherwise might have continued to lie dormant. This volume is not the end of the story[b]ut it has highlighted some promising new areas of research."--John T. Pawlikowski, professor of social ethics and director, Catholic-Jewish Studies Program, Catholic Theological Union "[C]ompletely new findings from research on Nazi looting of property and exploitation of slave and forced labor during World War 2..."--Austrian Information Oliver Rathkolb is co-director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institut fr Geschichte und Gesellschaft, Vienna, research director of the Democracy Center, Vienna, research coordinator of the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue, and assistant professor at the Institute for Contemporary History of the University of Vienna.

Book Memories of the Second World War in Neutral Europe 1945 2023

Download or read book Memories of the Second World War in Neutral Europe 1945 2023 written by Manuel Bragança and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume is a sequel to, and a development of, The Long Aftermath: Cultural Legacies of Europe at War, 1936-2016 (2016). It focuses on the six major European countries and states that remained officially neutral throughout the Second World War, namely Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Vatican. Its transnational, comparative and interdisciplinary approach addresses complex questions pertaining to collective remembrance, national policies and politics, and intellectual as well as cultural responses to neutrality during and after the conflict. The contributions are from a broad range of scholars working across the disciplines of history, literature, film, media, and cultural studies. Their thought-provoking chapters challenge many assumptions about neutrality in the post-war European and global context, thereby filling a gap in the existing scholarship. Common themes that run through the volume include the intertwined and dynamic links between neutrality and moral responsibility during and after the Second World War, the importance of memory politics and popular culture in shaping collective memories, and the impact of the Holocaust in shifting traditional perspectives on neutrality since the 1990s. This volume will be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates, scholars interested in the field of memory studies, as well as non-specialist readers.

Book Lonely Cold War of Pope Pius XII

Download or read book Lonely Cold War of Pope Pius XII written by Peter C. Kent and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-21 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Lonely Cold War of Pope Pius XII Peter Kent shows how the Catholic Church was able to continue to exist on both sides of the Iron Curtain in spite of the division of Europe after the Second World War. Although Christian democracy became increasingly influential in western Europe, the struggle to preserve the position and rights of the Church in the east was much more difficult. When east European governments, under Moscow's direction, began their offensive against the independence of the Church in 1948, the papacy found that it stood alone, with little assistance from the U.S. Kent offers a new assessment of Pius XII, extending the study of his career and papacy beyond the Second World War. He also examines the origins of the Cold War, the European perspective on American and Soviet policies, and the diplomatic role and influence of the Roman Catholic Church.

Download or read book Pio XII e gli ebrei written by Johan Ickx and published by Rizzoli. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Towards and Beyond the Italian Republic

Download or read book Towards and Beyond the Italian Republic written by Davide Cadeddu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical process that led to the foundation of the Italian Republic and its constitution, viewed through the personal experiences and political reflections of Adriano Olivetti (between 1919 and 1960), general manager and president of the well-known typewriter manufacturer “Ing. C. Olivetti & C.” An unbroken line of reasoning linked his maturing political reflections during the two post-war periods. The historical context of the 1950s did not prove to be very propitious, but the guidelines dispersed throughout the Italian cultural and political world from the movement that Olivetti founded were certainly seminal – generating a legacy of ideas that has only in part been recognized. What makes this study distinctive is the original approach to reading the history of Italy through Adriano Olivetti’s eyes and thoughts, far from the more common Christian Democratic or Communist perspective of those years. It is simply another view of what the Italian Republic could be and was not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
