Book Pinkas Kahal and the Mediene

Download or read book Pinkas Kahal and the Mediene written by Stefan Litt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of the rich history of the Jews in the Dutch Republic have tended to concentrate on the remarkable story of Amsterdam. In fact, numerous communities existed in other parts of the country, of which records survive from some, occasionally extending back to the late eighteenth century. This study examines the records of four provincial Ashkenazi communities in eighteenth-century Netherlands: The Hague, Middelburg, Leeuwarden, and Oisterwijk. These internal sources, compiled by the officials of the Jewish communities concerned, known as pinkassei kahal, have often been neglected by historians. The present study reveals how pinkassim can shed light on the administrative structures and history of Jewish communities, in addition to examining the phenomenon in general, and showing them to be the central and most authoritative documents of Jewish communities in early modern Europe.

Book excerpt: Sochaczew, located in central Poland is a town about 44 miles due west of Warsaw, whose Jewish presence dates back to the 15th century. The first reported Jew in town was in 1463 - a doctor. Life was not easy for the Jews due to an alleged "blood libel" in the mid- 16th century, and the rabbi was punished with a death penalty, along with several other inhabitants. In the 19th century the Jewish community grew. Sochaczew became a great Hasidic center, first led by Tzaddik Abraham Bornsztajn. In the later part of the 19th century reconstruction of the synagogue began after the previous one was burned down. Being on the road between Berlin and Warsaw many of the Jews fled during World War I. There were several town "personalities" such as Chaikel the Wagon Driver that were written about in addition the many rabbis. There were workers' movements and professional unions as well as a Bund and Communist Circle. Memories of some of the survivors are related in the book. The synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis when they entered the town in September 1939, and the town was destroyed during World War ll. Many of the Jews ended up in the Warsaw ghetto and some ended up in the Skarzyko Work Camp. 4,000 Jews lived in the town at the start of the war. Few survived. Today, there are no Jews in the town.

Book Gal and Noa s Daddies

Download or read book Gal and Noa s Daddies written by Shosh Pinkas and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noa and Gal have two fathers, Itai and Yoav. They call them by their nicknames, Daddy-Yo and Daddy-I. Noa and Gal were born to gay parents in a process called surrogacy, with the help of two special women that enabled the arrival of the twins into the world. In this unique book, the writer, Shosh Pinkas, shares the story of many same-sex families around the world. Gal and Noa's Daddies describes in a simple, clear, and humorous way, without any apologies, a loving and caring same-sex family. This is a brave and important book for children, and it also provides an appropriate answer for the needs of adults, as well. Family members, teachers, and friends will learn how to cope with the questions of curious children who seek to know more about the different types of families they see around them. For age 3 and up. The story was evaluated by a child psychologist to insure that the messages are appropriate for children of this age. *** "Shosh Pinkas's book is a charming book that tells the story of a happy, loving family. Some say that all happy families are alike, but this family is a little different - it has two fathers and two daughters. The book explains how the girls came to this world in a family that has two dads but without the need to justify it. Human warmth is the most important thing. Every child that reads this book will wish to sit on the lap of Daddy-I and Daddy-Yo, to play with the cats, and to be a part of Noa and Gal's home - a hugging and sharing home, where everyone makes salad and does the laundry. Society needs books like this one: free in mind, not stuttering, that relays the joy that each parent feels when choosing to raise children and accepting the privilege of answering their children's questions, while teaching them to think and respect every person, young or old." (Prof. Y. Tamir, President of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Former Minister of Education) "The book Gal and Noa's Daddies fills the void that exists on this subject on children's bookshelves. The book gives children a clear and simple explanation without unnecessary details, but in an easy-to-understand language. The story challenges the conventional disciplines of gender and presents alternative options as natural and positive. I'm sure the book would be an appropriate response to the need of adults - relatives, teachers, and friends - to answer questions that children will ask. The illustrations are aesthetic and pleasant. They contribute to the presentation of the family as natural, warm, and loving, and help to shatter the existing stereotypes. I enjoyed reading it!" (Rennana, Library Director, The David Yellin Academic College of Education) "A few decades ago, you could hardly find books on "special" children. Today, there are no special children-all children are special, with their own unique personality. The awareness of diversity and variety are evolving, although not enough, and children are the first to accept it. I believe that they deliver the change and so does your book. The life of your children and their daughters will enrich us all. Slowly, tolerance will arrive. Bless you!" (Dr. Hana Gilaie Guinor, Clinical Psychologist)
