Book Collecting Old Lustre Ware

Book excerpt: Some of the brilliant lustres produced by the early Staffordshire potters--notably during the Wedgwood period--have an exceptional interest, and the history of the production of lustre ware at the various centres of potting is as elusive as the rich bloom for which the collector now seeks. The absence of historical sequence, the paucity both of data and marked examples, together with the erratic manner in which the metallic glazes were associated with the pottery and porcelain made in the English factories at the beginning of the nineteenth century and onwards, all tend to add fascination to the pursuit of the finer specimens which have survived.--pg. ix.

  • Author : Peter Hyland
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press
  • Release : 2005-01-01

Download or read book The Herculaneum Pottery written by Peter Hyland and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of Herculaneum pottery in early nineteenth-century Liverpool marked a pivotal moment in the clay arts. This book provides a comprehensive history of Herculaneum pottery—highly sought after in North America—and its rapid rise to international prominence. Renowned Liverpool porcelain collector Peter Hyland examines the pottery's relatively brief heyday from about 1800 to 1820. He then re-defines its niche within the wider context of the established Liverpool pottery tradition, which dates back to 1700. Liverpool's earthenware and porcelain were exported around the world, and Hyland investigates records to reveal the surprising extent to which the United States and Canada relied on Herculaneum for their fine wares. Ultimately, he considers why the pottery factory failed, showing how competition from Merseyside led to the factory's eventual closure in 1840. Building on the seminal work of Alan Smith, Peter Hyland's study draws on new scholarly research and recent excavations to reveal the extensive range of wares and decorations made at the Herculaneum factory. This new edition is illustrated with a wealth of full-color images, and it will stand as the definitive text on Herculaneum pottery.

Book Souvenirs from the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria

Download or read book Souvenirs from the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria written by Richard and Susan Wales and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-12-13 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flavour of this book ... This small disk is called Carmichael’s Amulet and it commemorates the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria by the dates 1837 and 1897. These are the dates of her 60 years reign. To the right can be seen a mould that is carved from wood. It seems to have been professionally made in a large block that is well finished and furnished with a hook for hanging up. The mould may have produced butter pats or terrines for a Victorian celebration. As well as the Diamond Jubilee dates it commemorates the Record Reign that Queen Victoria had achieved in 1896 after being monarch for longer than George III. These images were taken by the authors as this book was being written and so they do not appear in the text which summarises an enormous variety of Diamond Jubilee souvenirs. Inside you will find a unique view of Victoriana that was made to celebrate one event at the height of the powers of the British Empire. The souvenirs will give you a glimpse into Victorian creative ingenuity as well as the thinking and beliefs of people in 1897.
