How did power, sadism, and conformity turn education into mind control (not that we need either)? Can a rock band keep its identity as its members change?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive review of the music and career of Pink Floyd on stage, record, and film, featuring the reflections of the band themselves, as well as the thoughts of their critics then and now Four remarkable DVDs explain the controversial twists and turns of the Floyd story through a unique series of interviews featuring Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and the late Richard Wright. The recollections of the band are compared and contrasted with the views of the insiders who worked with Pink Floyd in the studio and on the road. The war between the late Norman Smith and Syd Barrett is also laid bare and original producer Joe Boyd recalls his frustrations over losing the band to EMI. Ron Geesin gives a blunt appraisal of the making of Atom Heart Mother and EMI Studio engineer Peter Mew remembers the Ummagumma debacle. Vocalist Clare Torry reveals the truth behind The Great Gig In the Sky, while Snowy White and Andy Roberts from Floyd's "surrogate band" recall the surreal backstage environment during the tour for The Wall as the poisonous rift between Waters and Wright reached its zenith. Download or read book Algal Cell Motility written by Michael Melkonian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algae exhibit the greatest variety of cell motility phenomena in the living world. These range from the peculiar gliding motility of filamentous blue green algae or cyanobacteria to chloroplast movements and cytoplasmic streaming which are most common in higher plants. In addition, cell motility by eukaryotic flagella is the characteristic mode of cell locomotion in algal flagellates and most reproductive cells of algae. Algae use these cell motility systems mainly to orient themselves or their photosynthetic organelles in a suitable light gradient to optimize growth and reproduction. In consequence most of the motility systems are coupled to photoreceptors and are regulated by signal transduction cascades. Algal cell motility has thus attracted consid erable interest also from non-phycologists and some algal motility systems have become models of research in cell and molecular biology. This book summarizes some of the progress that has been made in recent years in the analysis of cell motility phenomena in the algae. Although complete coverage of the subject was not attempted, the six chapters cover all the major types of cell motility systems and the authors provide in depth reviews of gliding motility, chloroplast movements, cytoplasmic streaming, flagellar beat pat terns, mechanisms of flagellar movement and centrin-mediated cell motility.

Book Rethinking Gamification

Download or read book Rethinking Gamification written by Mathias Fuchs and published by Meson Press Eg. This book was released on 2014 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamification marks a major change to everyday life. It describes the permeation of economic, political, and social contexts by game-elements such as awards, rule structures, and interfaces that are inspired by video games. Sometimes the term is reduced to the implementation of points, badges, and leaderboards as incentives and motivations to be productive. Sometimes it is envisioned as a universal remedy to deeply transform society toward more humane and playful ends. Despite its use by corporations to manage brand communities and personnel, however, gamification is more than just a marketing buzzword. States are beginning to use it as a new tool for governing populations more effectively. It promises to fix what is wrong with reality by making every single one of us fitter, happier, and healthier. Indeed, it seems like all of society is up for being transformed into one massive game. The contributions in this book offer a candid assessment of the gamification hype. They trace back the historical roots of the phenomenon and explore novel design practices and methods. They critically discuss its social implications and even present artistic tactics for resistance. It is time to rethink gamification!

This book was released on 2019-07-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the philosophy of perception and observation is discussed by leading philosophers with implications in the philosophy of mind, in epistemology, and in philosophy of science. In the last years the philosophy of perception underwent substantial changes and new views appeared: the intentionality of perception has been contested by relational theories of perception (direct realism), a richer view of perceptual content has emerged, new theories of intentionality have been defended against naturalistic theories of representation (e. g. phenomenal intentionality). These theoretical changes reflect also new insights coming from psychological theories of perception. These changes have substantial consequences for the epistemic role of perception and for its role in scientific observation. In the present volume, leading philosophers of perception discuss these new views and show their implications in the philosophy of mind, in epistemology and in philosophy of science. A special focus is laid on Franz Brentano and Ludwig Wittgenstein. A reference volume for all scholars and students of the history, psychology and philosophy of perception, and cognitive science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.
