Book excerpt: This lovely gift book--available in three striking cover options that will be shipped to customers at random--will beguile a new generation with flirtatious representations of femininity from the 1940s and 50s. Illustrations of irresistible pinup models bring teasing frivolity to a range of everyday situations, organized thematically from morning to evening. From sun-kissed beauties at the beach to ski bunnies hitting the slopes, bedside nurses ready to take your temperature to scantily clad runaways, rakish shipmates to not-so-conscientious secretaries, these smiling cuties are ready for fun. Representations of women who embrace their sexuality--flirtatious but never vulgar--have been around since the late nineteenth century, but the pin-up genre skyrocketed into popularity during World War II. The penny arcade trading cards originally viewed on a peep-show style reel and reproduced here as detachable illustrations feature both established pin-up artists and those waiting to be rediscovered. Each illustration is accompanied by a humorous and memorable celebrity quote.

IMAGINED BY MALY SIRI, THIS COFFEE TABLE BOOK IS A REMINDER OF VINTAGE MAGAZINES AND AN INVITATION TO ENTER THE SPELLBINDING WORLD OF PIN-UPS Maly Siri’s Pin-up Art Good Girls / Bad Girls raises two themes: - On one side, the “Good Girls”: the damsels with soft skin powdering their faces in front of the mirror, the Tahitian girls with enchanting smiles and the brave soldiers... Their charm is due to their sparkling characters and apparent candour. - And on the other side, the “Bad Girls”: the rouged vamps with sensuous looks, the spies, the melancholic blues singers and other mis ts... The fact that they are aware of their charms makes them even more dangerous... This book is a rich and delicious homage inspired by the iconography of the 1930’s to 50’s, a concentrate of pure glamour, with a preface by Chantal Thomass.

Book Pinups Past and Present

  • Author : Jim Silke
  • Publisher : Chartwell Books
  • Release : 2018-10-30
  • ISBN : 9780785836704
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Pinups Past and Present written by Jim Silke and published by Chartwell Books. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pinups: Past and Present is a curated reference survey of the state of pinup art among contemporary graphic artists, tattooists, and cartoonists. With more than 100 artists from the United States, Europe, Australia, Japan, and China included, this collection offers an unrivaled look at every different direction pin-up art design has taken since the heady days of Bettie Page. More than 200 images from the best practitioners betray the influences of the greats, such as Gil Elvgren and Olivia De Berardinis, but also show new trends, including a revival in 1980s-influenced line work in the vein of Patrick Nagel, and of biomech-influenced approaches. Every image is accompanied by a caption detailing the artist, name of work, and major influences, making this an invaluable source of information and inspiration for all graphic artists and cartoonists in the genre. In the past, pinup women were considered to be a low bar for artists and were generally taboo in the art community. The current appeal of old pinup art is the unpretentious, often naive, and joyful whimsy that celebrates the sensuality of the women depicted. Whether they're real or imaginary, pinup women are a celebration of feminine sexuality. The sheer breadth and span of pinup art today is amazing and every major genre is represented within, including: Classic American Sci-Fi and Fantasy Cartoon and Comic Book Hot Rod Neo-Surreal Pinups: Past and Present features the best contemporary artists, such as Enric Badia Romero, Carlos Cartagena, Fiona Stephenson, Chris Wahl, ONEQ, David Nakayama, Andrew Hickinbottom, Zach Gardia, Ben Tan, Marta Nael, Jan Meininghaus, David Vincente, Screaming Demons, Syd Brak, Loopydave, Natalie Shau, Jasmine Becket-Griffith, Elias Chatzoudis, and many more. For the pinup aficionado and artist, this non-stop, eye-popping book is an essential source of inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes pictures *Includes their most famous quotes *Includes bibliographies for further reading *Includes a table of contents "There are two reasons why I'm in show business, and I'm standing on both of them." - Betty Grable "I've had a lot of unhappiness in my life - and a lot of happiness. Who doesn't?" - Rita Hayworth No history of American pop culture in the 1940s would be complete without mention of Betty Grable, the most popular pinup girl of the World War II era. Grable possessed the outstanding fortune of not only having an ideal body but arriving at the most fortuitous time imaginable; the famous pin-up photo of her, taken by Frank Powolny, made her the highest-earning actress in Hollywood from 1943 to 1951. Indeed, it was not hyperbole that earned Grable the nickname of "the girl with the million dollar legs" - not only were her legs famously adored by American soldiers fighting overseas, they were actually insured to the tune of one million dollars (Suddath). Grable was the banner actress for the era before the advent of Playboy and other publications designed to satisfy the lust of the heterosexual male, an era that objectified women but in a more wholesome, less pornographic way that was designed to reinforce all-American values. However, if Grable was, monetarily speaking, the most successful actress of the 1940s, there is a major gulf between her commercial success and the critical appraisal of her acting talents. Grable never won an Academy Award, and the swift demise of her career testifies to her inability to sustain her career. Rita Hayworth's life and career remain fascinating to both the general public and avid movie fans alike. Even people with just a casual interest in movies appreciate her performances in films such as Gilda (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1947), and Salome (1953), and few actresses could rival Hayworth's popularity during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Indeed, many of her most famous films are still enjoyed by viewers from around the world even today, and with her acting career spanning nearly 50 years, few viewers are not familiar with at least some of Hayworth's films, particularly since she appeared in films of a wide variety of genres. In addition, Hayworth is also famously remembered for her status as one of the premier pin-up girls of World War II, with countless American soldiers who fought overseas carrying pin-up photos of Hayworth with them at all times. Even if she was never awarded an Academy Award, Hayworth remains extremely popular today, and it was no surprise that she was named one of the Top 100 actresses of the 20th century by the American Film Institute in 1999. While Hayworth is still famous today, she is arguably even more significant within the academic community, as the rise of Film Studies and the subsequent development of Cultural Studies as academic disciplines catapulted Hayworth from a popular actress to a figure worthy of close critical attention. Hayworth is now identified not only for the importance of her films but also as a figure who illuminates and exposes the treatment of race and sexuality during the period known as classical Hollywood cinema. As someone who was relegated to transforming her entire image, including her personal background and physical appearance, Hayworth represents both the height of Hollywood glamour as well as the lengths required of many actors and actresses in order to succeed in a particularly cut-throat environment. If Hollywood promoted the Horatio Alger myth of the rags-to-riches movie star, it is also important to acknowledge the extent to which it forced many stars to essentially erase their personal backgrounds in the interest of achieving this success. Even though it is true that Hayworth was the beneficiary of tremendous fortune throughout her life, her popularity within Cultural Studies curricula reflects the importance of not only her films but also her star image as well.

  • Pages : 101 pages

Download or read book Plus Size Paula Pin Up written by Eva Quim and published by Gulliver Noir. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meet Paula—my imaginary pin-up model. She's big, busty, and brimming with enthusiasm! Rather than make a book about dozens of pin-up girls, I thought I’d focus on just one. It can be fun to really get to know a particular pin-up, inside and out. So I made up this book about a made-up girl I named Paula, capturing her as she might look in different seasons, with different hair styles, costumes and make-up. Sometimes, one of Paula's imaginary sisters seems to have slipped into book, but as they're all just as pretty. So without further ado let me introduce you to Paula, a pretty, imaginary, college girl from the heartland with a sweet and sunny disposition. She knows she's cute, and the effect her proportions have on some people, which can be infuriating in real life. So at college she dresses conservatively and doesn't have much time for dating as she concentrates on her studies. But in my pin-up world she can be both a good girl and a bad one. She can be anything she wants. So she lets her hair down, and indulges herself, posing for the artist in all the ways that drive men wild. She’s a day dream. She’s a fantasy. She’s having fun. And she wants you to look at her!
