Book A Management oriented Classification of Pinyon Juniper Woodlands of the Great Basin

Download or read book A Management oriented Classification of Pinyon Juniper Woodlands of the Great Basin written by Neil E. West and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hierarchical framework for the classification of Great Basin pinyon-juniper woodlands was based on a systematic sample of 426 stands from a random selection of 66 of the 110 mountain ranges in the region. That is, mountain ranges were randomly selected, but stands were systematically located on mountain ranges. The National Hierarchical Framework of Ecological Units (ECOMAP) was used for the highest levels of classification, subdividing the Great Basin into nine relatively environmentally homogeneous Sections. The remaining levels are vegetation-based, focusing on the relative composition and dominance of pinyon and juniper and the dominant shrub and perennial grass species present. This approach will allow managers to better relate the results of previous, as well as new studies and management experiences.

This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scientific Network of Integrated Systems, Design and Technology (ISDT) is an initiative that has been established to respond industrial needs for integration of “Knowledge Technology" (KT) with multi- and inter-disciplinary applications. In particular the objective of ISDT is to incorporate multilateral engineering disciplines i.e. Composite-, Automotive-, Industrial- , Control- and Micro-Electronics Engineering, and derive knowledge for design and development of innovative product and services. In this context, the discourse of KT is established to address effective use of Knowledge Management, Semantic Technology, Information Systems and Software Engineering towards evolution of adaptive and intelligent systems for industrial applications. This carefully edited book presents the results of the latest ISDT meeting with special involvement of leading researchers and industries whose contributions are presented in the book chapters. This book consists of three main chapters namely: · Chapter 1: Applied Knowledge Management in Practice · Chapter 2: Semantic Technologies for Industrial Management and Process Controlling · Chapter 3: Knowledge Driven Approaches for Product Engineering Each article presents a unique in-progress research with respect to the target goal of improving our common understanding of KT integration and promoting further researches and cooperation in future.

Book Context and Semantics for Knowledge Management

Download or read book Context and Semantics for Knowledge Management written by Paul Warren and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge and information are among the biggest assets of enterprises and organizations. However, efficiently managing, maintaining, accessing, and reusing this intangible treasure is difficult. Information overload makes it difficult to focus on the information that really matters; the fact that much corporate knowledge only resides in employees’ heads seriously hampers reuse. The work described in this book is motivated by the need to increase the productivity of knowledge work. Based on results from the EU-funded ACTIVE project and complemented by recent related results from other researchers, the application of three approaches is presented: the synergy of Web 2.0 and semantic technology; context-based information delivery; and the use of technology to support informal user processes. The contributions are organized in five parts. Part I comprises a general introduction and a description of the opportunities and challenges faced by organizations in exploiting Web 2.0 capabilities. Part II looks at the technologies, and also some methodologies, developed in ACTIVE. Part III describes how these technologies have been evaluated in three case studies within the project. Part IV starts with a chapter describing the principal market trends for knowledge management solutions, and then includes a number of chapters describing work complementary to ACTIVE. Finally, Part V draws conclusions and indicates further areas for research. Overall, this book mainly aims at researchers in academia and industry looking for a state-of-the-art overview of the use of semantic and Web 2.0 technologies for knowledge management and personal productivity. Practitioners in industry will also benefit, in particular from the case studies which highlight cutting-edge applications in these fields.

Book Biochemistry of Signal Transduction in Myocardium

Download or read book Biochemistry of Signal Transduction in Myocardium written by Jos M.J. Lamers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The chapters in this volume are the Proceedings of the Satellite Symposium of the XVIth World Congress of the International Society for Heart Research on `Signal Transduction in Normal and Diseased Myocardium' which was held in Rotterdam at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences of the Erasmus University, June 30 and July 1, 1995. Diverse and distinct auto-, para-, and endocrine stimuli arriving at the surface of endothelium, smooth muscle cells, cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts within the myocardium, engage cell type-specific receptors, which lead to transmission of signals across the cell plasma membrane and result in the production and activation of second messengers. The most common mechanism by which these second messengers function is via direct or indirect activation of specific protein kinases. The current challenge for scientists is to identify the specific substrates (e.g. metabolic enzymes, Ca2+-regulating proteins, transcription and mitotic factors) for the many protein kinases, to elucidate the biological significance of the cell type-specific expression heterogeneity of signalling proteins (e.g. membrane receptors, isoenzymes of protein kinase C, G-proteins) and to unravel the cross-talk interaction between the signalling systems (e.g. phospholipase C with adenylate cyclase and phospholipase C with phospholipase D). The multiplicity of receptor types, G-proteins, effector proteins, second messengers and protein kinases, their substrate proteins and the `cross-talk' interactions in the myocardium raises fundamental questions about the mechanisms that ensure the precision and timing of the myocardial responses to hormonal and pharmacological stimuli. This book provides an up-to-date source of information for all scientists and clinicians interested in the mechanisms by which external signals are transmitted to the interior and regulation of a variety of physiological, pathological and pharmacological responses.

Book Personal Multimedia Preservation

Download or read book Personal Multimedia Preservation written by Vasileios Mezaris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text/reference advocates a novel forgetful approach to dealing with personal multimedia content in the long run, which is inspired by the effectiveness of human forgetting as a mechanism for helping us to stay focused on important things. The text presents theoretical foundations, technologies, applications, and case study results that help the reader to understand the problems and challenges associated with personal digital preservation, and the solutions that can be developed in response to these challenges. Topics and features: Highlights the value of an intelligent and selective approach to personal multimedia preservation, involving managed forgetting and contextualized remembering; considers how a conceptual understanding of human memory function can be used to inspire the design of digital managed preservation and forgetting; discusses methods that endow computers with capabilities to understand digital content, in order to support intelligent preservation decisions; examines the assessment of the importance of information items, introducing the concepts of memory buoyancy and preservation value; reviews methods for preserving the context associated with a digital item, and for assessing how this context evolves over time; proposes a reference model for the Preserve-or-Forget (PoF) approach which is integrative, value-driven, brain-inspired, forgetful, and evolution-aware; describes the integration of preservation functionalities in a Personal Information Management (PIM) application; presents a user study on a photo selection task, using the results to design methods for automatically selecting important photos from personal collections. This interdisciplinary volume provides significant insights from computer science, engineering and psychology that will be of great interest to researchers involved in multimedia and software engineering, multimedia preservation, cultural informatics, digital heritage, and the digital humanities.
