Book Pilot Study on the Effects of Seismic Air Gun Noise on Lobster Homarus Americanus

Download or read book Pilot Study on the Effects of Seismic Air Gun Noise on Lobster Homarus Americanus written by J. F. Payne and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lobster is one of the most commercially important species in Atlantic Canada and it is important to have some knowledge on whether seismic surveys may pose a risk to lobster populations. Noted in this regard is the mounting interest with respect to seismic surveys in the relatively shallow waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence where has extensive and rich lobster grounds. The basic thrust of the studies were to explore for changes in various biological endpoints and identify those which might warrant further assessment in a more comprehensive manner.--Document.

Book excerpt: Regarding histopathology of the hepatopancreas, the degree of "necrosis" and periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining intensity, (a marker for glycogen), of the digestive tubules was similar between the control and exposed groups. [...] The recommended sample volume of 100 μl was increased to 500 μl to bring the AST levels that are present in lobster serum within the working range of the kit. [...] The recommended sample volume of 20 μl was increased to 100 μl to bring the CPK levels that are present in lobster serum within the working range of the kit. [...] In the present study, based on the histological observations of the sections stained with H&E, the general structure of hepatopancreas in all samples corresponded with the description provided above. [...] In this context, given the apparent similarity of molting status of animals in the present study (see softness ranking in Section 3.2 above) and assumptions of similar reproductive and feeding status (animals were from the same batch and held in the same tank until exposure), it is of interest that the group of lobsters exposed to the sound track exhibited a higher degree of vacuolation and dilati.

Book The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life II

Download or read book The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life II written by Arthur N. Popper and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-26 with total page 1243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meeting of Aquatic Noise 2013 will introduce participants to the most recent research data, regulatory issues and thinking about effects of man-made noise and will foster critical cross-disciplinary discussion between the participants. Emphasis will be on the cross-fertilization of ideas and findings across species and noise sources. As with its predecessor, The Effects of Noise on Aquatic Life: 3rd International Conference will encourage discussion of the impact of underwater sound, its regulation and mitigation of its effects. With over 100 contributions from leading researchers, a wide range of sources of underwater sound will be considered.

Book Exploring Animal Behavior Through Sound Volume 1

Download or read book Exploring Animal Behavior Through Sound Volume 1 written by Christine Erbe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open-access book empowers its readers to explore the acoustic world of animals. By listening to the sounds of nature, we can study animal behavior, distribution, and demographics; their habitat characteristics and needs; and the effects of noise. Sound recording is an efficient and affordable tool, independent of daylight and weather; and recorders may be left in place for many months at a time, continuously collecting data on animals and their environment. This book builds the skills and knowledge necessary to collect and interpret acoustic data from terrestrial and marine environments. Beginning with a history of sound recording, the chapters provide an overview of off-the-shelf recording equipment and analysis tools (including automated signal detectors and statistical methods); audiometric methods; acoustic terminology, quantities, and units; sound propagation in air and under water; soundscapes of terrestrial and marine habitats; animal acoustic and vibrational communication; echolocation; and the effects of noise. This book will be useful to students and researchers of animal ecology who wish to add acoustics to their toolbox, as well as to environmental managers in industry and government.

Download or read book Zooplankton written by Petra. H. Lenz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-11 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zooplankton is a major work of reference for researchers in plankton biology, physiology and behavior, which combines behavioral and psychological approaches to the study of plankton on present and interdisciplinary investigation of sensory processes in pelagic environments. The breadth of perspective thus achieved provides valuable insights into the larger scale ecological processes of biological productivity, community structure and population dynamics. Technological advances in almost all aspects of biological research have opened up opportunities for a re-examination of the sensory ecology of planktonic organisms. In this wide-ranging collection, leading researchers in planktonic behavior and physiology address the rapidly developing interface between these two major areas. The studies presented range from the laboratory to the field and from the cell to the whole organism, but share the common goal of understanding the special sensory world of organisms that live in pelagic environments and how their behavior and physiology relate to it.

Book The Crustacean Nervous System

Download or read book The Crustacean Nervous System written by Konrad Wiese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique selection of reviews summarizes current knowledge in all major fields of crustacean neurobiology and all levels of their CNS organization, using lobster and crayfish. Felsen All living kind much effort spend Some model modes, some model rays, To cope with their environment Some feel that spectra all portrays. Some use their eyes, some use their nose Then there are those who with despatch, To sense where other things repose. Take refuge in the ocean wedge. For one group, nothing's more profound Than to explore the world with sound. If things get messy, randomize. These audio diagnosticians What's partly smooth, determinize. You ponder, is it this or that? Go by the name of acousticians. And wish you were a lowly bat They regularly meet to check Whether their sonogram's on track. The meeting's hosts did treat us well. With images stored in their packs, They let the climate cast its spell. This year they came to Halifax. No weath'ry hope was placed in vain. There they combined with ocean types We were exposed to wind and rain, And each could hear the other's gripes. We glimpsed blue sky through clouds dispersed. A meeting naturally does start But rainy sequence was reversed: Reviewing present state of art. The ocean types would like it wet What we found out is where it's at: Yet they got stuck with sun instead. We cannot hope to match the bat Each confrence has the same refrain: Computer printouts by the reams It has been fun to meet again.
