Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Army helicopter pilots, instrument rated, flew a difficult precision instrument flight pattern in this Laboratory's GAT-2H helicopter simulator. For each flight, each subject was given a different combination of thrust to weight, cyclic control sensitivity and cyclic spring centering force gradient condition making up an incomplete, balanced block-type experimental design. Several error measurements were recorded during the trials; however, none could be satisfactorily utilized to predict either accuracy of performance, or be an indicator of relative workload. An unanticipated large variation of measures taken is thought to be the cause. Additional approaches and further study of the problem is recommended.

As civil and military aircraft technologies advance, interactions between pilots and aircraft are becoming more complex. Recent accidents and other incidents have been attributed to adverse APC in military aircraft. In addition, APC has been implicated in some civilian incidents. This book evaluates the current state of knowledge about adverse APC and processes that may be used to eliminate it from military and commercial aircraft. Book excerpt: The opto-kinetic cervico reflex (OKCR) is a recently hypothesized visually driven reflex that serves to stabilize the image of the external horizon on the retina during high performance aircraft roll maneuvers. Although anecdotally reported as occurring, head tilt during helicopter flight has not been formally studied. Such research is required to determine the full impact and significance it may have on a rotary wing aviator's flying performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between horizon position and perception of orientation, and thus generate vital information to assess whether this reflex plays an important role in spatial disorientation. Twenty volunteer pilots participated in a UH-60 flight simulator study to examine the effects of this reflex. The results confirm that the OKCR occurs during simulated helicopter flight, both with and without night vision goggles. As with previous studies, head roll increased during flight under visual meteorological conditions in relation to increasing aircraft roll angle up to a maximum sustainable level and then remained constant. Head roll did not occur during flight under instrument meteorological conditions. Various aspects that impact rotary-wing operations are discussed, and recommendations made for future research.

Book excerpt: "The U.S. Army uses the 2B24 Synthetic Flight Training System (SFTS) for the Instrument Phase of Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) training. The SFTS is an instrument simulator, mounted on a hydraulic motion platform, with no visual system. Its technology dates from the late 1960s. Its cockpit represents the UH-1, which has been replaced by the TH-67 training helicopter. The Army is concerned with the age, complexity and costs of the SFTS, at a time when PC- based simulators, like the Frasca 342 Primary Skills Trainer (PST) are available. The PST's cockpit represents the TH-67 helicopter. It has a visual display, but no motion system. Thirty-eight IEAW students were assigned to experimental (PST) or control (SFTS) groups. After 30 hr of simulator training, both groups completed 20 hr training in the TH-67. No students were eliminated or set back to later classes. Few significant differences in performance were noted, though SFTS trainees were more likely to indicate that training in the simulator had hindered performance in the aircraft. The PST seemed inferior to the SFTS in trim control. The research demonstrated that IERW students could learn instrument skills in a simpler, more economical simulator without hydraulic controls or a motion system."--DTIC.
