  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book The New Poverty written by Stephen Armstrong and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 75 years after the Beveridge Report: The shocking extent of hardship in the UK Right now in the UK, 13 million people live in poverty; one in five children subsist below the poverty line. Figures such as these suggest devastating repercussions for health, education and life expectancy. The new poor, however, is an even larger group than these official statistics suggest, and its conditions are something new to our era. More often than not, these people are the working poor, living precariously and betrayed by austerity. In The New Poverty, Stephen Armstrong tells the stories of the most vulnerable in British society. He explores an unreported country, abandoned by politicians and stranded as the welfare state has shrunk. Furthermore, as benefit cuts continue into 2018 and beyond, Armstrong asks what will be the long-term impact of Brexit and—on the anniversary of the Beveridge Report—what we can do to keep the giants of indigence at bay.

Book Call Me Captain

Download or read book Call Me Captain written by Susan Scott and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer and marine biologist Susan Scott had an enviable existence—a home in Hawai‘i, a prized 37-foot sailboat and exciting international adventures, all shared with her physician husband Craig in a marriage so intimate they called it the “Twinship.” Yet, when her menopausal hormones raged and Craig grew preoccupied with Ironman triathlon training, this perfect life ended. Once blessed with well-being, love, humor, and sharing, the Twinship exploded with fights, silence, accusations, and failed counseling. Shell-shocked, Susan sought solace in the one thing that always gave her joy: marine wildlife. She overhauled the couple’s neglected boat and, with a male friend nearly half her age, sailed away. Except it wasn’t that easy; Susan had always relied on Craig to make the sailing decisions and Alex, her young first mate, was a sailing novice. Call Me Captain follows Susan as she leaves everything behind—or tries to— and sails to spectacular but isolated Palmyra Atoll to work as a volunteer biologist. Susan helps rescue baby sea turtles, bands seabirds, and corrals ten-pound coconut crabs that look like Godzillas with knife-blade claws. She determinedly repairs her sailboat, skippers it through terrifying storms, and to her surprise, finds she and Craig are falling in love all over again. This time the two rediscover one another via satellite phone—Susan calling from her tiny floating speck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean to Craig in his hospital emergency room on Oahu. Susan writes with passion about swimming with manta rays, kayaking with sharks, and sailing with whales and dolphins. In those passages, she shows ways these magnificent animals guided her through the journey of a lifetime. Her memoir of self-discovery is a romance, a rousing sea tale, and a personal account of nature’s power to put life in perspective.

Book excerpt: A young American farm boy and a Japanese student are swept away from their lives by war and end up playing a deadly game of cat and mouse on a Pacific Island. It is a world war between with the lives and cultures of empires at stake, the largest and most vicious war to sweep across the globe. In spite of the sweep of the war around the world, in August 1942 many were focused on a rugged and brutal South Pacific island called Guadalcanal. Here, two determined nations pitted all they could spare committing every airplane, ship and soldier they could funnel into the cauldron. It was not just men viciously battling each other to the death, but inhospitable terrain, weather, disease, illness and even starvation plagued both sides. Starvation Island ‘the Canal’ was called by the Americans, and the Japanese used the same phrase, ga-to to describe gadarukanaru. Private Henrik Hahnemann was an eighteen year old Missouri farm boy growing up in the hard scrabble times of the Great Depression. Known for his hunting skills, his close-knit family often depended on him to bring home dinner. Shaken and bitter about the dastardly Japanese sneak attack, he was fixated on revenge and righting a great wrong. He chose the Marine Corps as the means for his personal retribution. Granted an early high school graduation, ‘Handyman’ Henrik struggled with the change from a peaceful farmer’s son, but his platoon came to recognize his shooting and hunting skills. When the chips were down he summoned the determination necessary to survive against hopeless odds. Superior Private Obatia Yoshiro was an average twenty year old student expected to eventually take over his father’s glass works along with the production of mysterious glass spheres for the Japanese Army. The unassuming economics student has another side seldom seen by most. In the summer months he crews his uncle’s fishing boat, exposing him to the physical and mental demands of the elements. His school plans suddenly undermined by a draft notice, he makes the best of a dismal and brutal life of absolute obligation and unquestioning obedience. Values and beliefs, discipline and obedience, massed firepower or skill at arms, which would prevail in this nightmare? Or was it a matter of the small Stars and Stripes flag carried by one or the belt of a thousand stitches—sen’ninbari—carried by the other? Would either protect or inspire? Would they see home again, or did it matter?

Download or read book Psychology of Science written by Robert W. Proctor and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of science, sometimes referred to as metascience, is a new and growing field that includes the philosophy of science, history of science, sociology of science, and anthropology of science. In the last ten years, the formal study of the psychology of science has also emerged. The psychology of science focuses on the individual scientist, influenced by intelligence, motivation, personality, and the development of scientific interest, thought, ability, and achievement over a lifespan. Science can be defined as explicitly and systematically testing hypotheses. Defined more broadly, science includes wider processes, such as theory construction and the hypothesis testing seen in children and "non-scientific" adults. Most prior work in the study of science has emphasized the role of explicit reasoning; however, contemporary research in psychology emphasizes the importance of implicit processes in decision-making and choice and assumes that the performance of many tasks involves a complex relationship between implicit and explicit processes. Psychology of Science brings together contributions from leaders in the emerging discipline of the psychology of science with other experts on the roles of implicit and explicit processes in thinking. Highlighting the role of implicit processes in the creation of scientific knowledge, this volume links the psychology of science to many strands of psychology , including cognitive, social, and developmental psychology, as well as neuroscience. Ultimately, this volume raises awareness of the psychology of science among psychologists, philosophers, and sociologists of science, and anyone interested in the metasciences.

But if you have technical questions or do not feel comfortable doing something, get professional help. If there is a federal disaster declaration, a telephone "hotline" will often be publicized to provide information about public, private, and voluntary agency programs to help you recover from the flood. Government disaster programs are there to help you, the taxpayer. You're paying for them; check them out. 3: Floodproof. It is very likely that your home will be flooded again someday.
