Book Justice Order and Anarchy

Download or read book Justice Order and Anarchy written by Alex Prichard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contextual account of the first anarchist theory of war and peace, and sheds new light on our contemporary understandings of anarchy in International Relations. Although anarchy is arguably the core concept of the discipline of international relations, scholarship has largely ignored the insights of the first anarchist, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. Proudhon's anarchism was a critique of the projects of national unification, universal dominion, republican statism and the providentialism at the heart of enlightenment social theory. While his break with the key tropes of modernity pushed him to the margins of political theory, Prichard links Proudhon back into the republican tradition of political thought from which his ideas emerged, and shows how his defence of anarchy was a critique of the totalising modernist projects of his contemporaries. Given that we are today moving beyond the very statist processes Proudhon objected to, his writings present an original take on how to institutionalise justice and order in our radically pluralised, anarchic international order. Rethinking the concept and understanding of anarchy, Justice, Order and Anarchy will be of interest to students and scholars of political philosophy, anarchism and international relations theory.

Book The Most Beautiful Flowers

Download or read book The Most Beautiful Flowers written by Pierre Joseph Redouté and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare indeed is the artist who is feted by royalty, and at the same time sought after by naturalists and scientists as an active collaborator. Such a painter was Pierre Joseph Redoute, born in 1759 on the Franco-Belgian border. Before Redoute was thirty his fame was established in Paris, where he was to become as renowned as his great neo-classic contemporary, Jacques-Louis David - and highly appreciated and honoured up to the year of his death, 1840. Even as Redoute collaborated with leading naturalists on several books and was rewarded with the title of Dessinateur to the Institut de France, he continued to specialize in roses, lilies, a nd lilacs. Redoute created this collection of masterpieces in 1833 as the pinnacle of his craft. In this lavish work - many of the plates were retouched by hand - he applied every technique and skill he had perfected, bringing art and nature into close harmony. A professional of self-imposed exacting standards, Redoute never abandoned the search for beauty and accuracy - as this magnificently produced volume shows so well. Although sales of his works in his lifetime never enabled him to balance his financial problems, connoisseurs of his turbulent times acclaimed him the Raphael of Flowers, the Rembrandt of Roses.

Book Reframing the Reclaiming of Urban Space

Download or read book Reframing the Reclaiming of Urban Space written by Megan E. Heim LaFrombois and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reframing the Reclaiming of Urban Space: A Feminist Exploration into Do-It-Yourself Urbanismin Chicago, Megan E. Heim LaFrombois explores the concept of do-it-yourself (DIY) urbanism from an intersectional, feminist, analytical framework. Interventions based on DIY urbanism are small-scale and place-specific and focus on urban spaces which can be reclaimed and repurposed, often outside of formal urban planning institutions. Heim LaFrombois examines the discourses and processes surrounding the institutionalized and embedded nature of DIY urbanism. She weaves together sites and sources to reveal the ways in which DIY urbanists make sense of their participation and experiences with DIY urbanism and with the broader political, social, and economic contexts and spaces in which these activities take place. Her research findings contribute to and build on current research that illustrates the importance of gender, race, class, and sexuality to cities, local politics, urban planning initiatives, and the development of communities.

Book Pierre Joseph Redout

Download or read book Pierre Joseph Redout written by Pierre Joseph Redouté and published by NAi Publishers. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) is the undisputed master of botanical art. His illustrations of flowers occupy the intersection of art and science, and they represent a unique fusion of botanical precision with artistic elegance. This richly illustrated publication presents a wide selection of Redouté's books, drawings and watercolours. Several short essays by Dutch and French specialists deal with different aspects of his art. As court artist to Queen Marie-Antoinette and Empress Joséphine, Redouté drew extraordinary flowers and plants from the Jardin des plantes and the gardens of Malmaison, which made him the darling of Parisian society. Napoleon Bonaparte presented his books as gifts to the crowned heads of Europe, and his pictures illustrated the works of the most eminent scientists of his day. His most famous books, 'Les Liliacées' and 'Les Roses', are among the milestones of botanical literature. Exhibition: Teylers Museum, Haarlem, the Netherlands (19.1.-5.5.2013).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know what he thought about property, government, war, art, and so many other subjects. But what about his spiritual side? For example, what did Pierre-Joseph Proudhon (1809-65), the great forefather of anarchism, have to say about Jesus Christ? For Proudhon, Jesus was the original Anti-christ or an "Anti-Messiah", who denied the traditional idea of the Messiah: Jesus taught that the Messiah was not a god who came to die for your sins, or some revolutionary leader coming to free the people: rather, for Proudhon's Jesus, "Messiah" is an abstraction relating to moral and social progress; "Christ" equals social and personal improvement. No man will come to save the day: instead, we have to reform ourselves. This is the first English edition of this curious, posthumous book by Proudhon.

  • Publisher : AK Press

Download or read book War and Peace written by Pierre-Joseph Proudhon and published by AK Press. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of Proudhon's best books, War and Peace is the least well known in the English-speaking world. This first English translation will open up both our understanding of Proudhon's mature works as well as a window on mid-nineteenth century international relations and the history of international thought. Sharkey's rich and faithful translation, and Prichard's scholarly introduction and annotations, bring this book to life for a new, (post)modern audience. This is still one of the only extended accounts of anarchist international theory in history and is one of the earliest in the history of socialist thought. Prichard's introduction describes both its specificity and the multiple lines of influence it had, on writers as diverse as Tolstoy, Sorel, French sociology more broadly, and post-1945 Anglo-American International Relations theory.
