Book excerpt: Jerry noticed that he was not in a mental fog any longer. In fact, it was like he had not taken a drink at all. The reality of all of this had sobered him up. There seemed to be a lot of noise coming from about two hundred yards away by some rocks. Jerry started to move in the direction of the rocks. There were a lot of lights and people around the edge of the rocks, and as Jerry got closer, he still could not see everything, but he could hear some whistling or high-pitched screaming. Jerry didn't understand until he got much closer and could see three or four dolphins caught in a small pool of water--too small, in fact, for them to survive, and the people around were talking and pointing their flashlights at them. Once Jerry reached them, he asked, "Does anyone know just what has caused the water to recede?" Just then an older man answered, "Well, I don't know for sure, but the news says that the entire west coast is just like this, and no one seems to know why."

Book Us and Them The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis

Download or read book Us and Them The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis written by Mark Blake and published by Nine Eight Books. This book was released on 2023-02-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Hugely entertaining history' - Mojo Between the late '60s and early '80s, design house Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles' Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl. Having originally been approached to design an album cover for their friends Pink Floyd, students Aubrey 'Po' Powell and Storm Thorgerson would go on to define the visual identity of rock and roll for the next fifteen years, swiftly gaining international prominence for their famed The Dark Side of the Moon artwork. This paved the way for other major musicians to set foot in the surreal photo-design world of Storm and Po, resulting in seminal Hipgnosis creations for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Black Sabbath, ELO and Yes. In this authorised account, with access to previously unpublished material and exclusive contributions from David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant and even Aubrey Powell himself, Mark Blake goes behind the scenes of the Hipgnosis partnership to reveal the pioneering ambition and grand vision that led to their success, as well as the clashing egos and artistic differences that undermined it. The Hipgnosis story also offers hitherto-untold insight into some of music's most legendary bands, as viewed through the prism of the people who shaped their imagery and cultural legacy. With the work of Hipgnosis continuing to be referenced, reproduced and revered worldwide, Us and Them serves as a celebration, a cautionary tale and a compelling human drama, exploring the vital intersection between art and music.

Book Faith Rising Between the Lines

Download or read book Faith Rising Between the Lines written by David B. Bowman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This writing intends to rouse would-be believers to faith--or enhance the faith of others--through the adventure of modern fiction. While taking note of the secularity of our era, the author insists the Spirit of God has not departed the scene. The opening poem by Emily Dickinson, "Tell all the truth but tell it slant," proposes the author's contention that the "indirect discourse" of fictional writers may welcome readers to faith's door in ways sermonic speech never did. The modern authors chosen for this purpose are Izak Dinesen, Annie Dillard, Kent Haruf, Loren Eiseley, Gary Trudeau, Garrison Keillor, William Golding, Walker Percy, Frederick Buechner, and Gabriel Marcel. Having explained one work each by these noted authors, the book closes by pointing to ways in which embedded faith may rise out of these pages to meet the reader where he or she lives.
