Book excerpt: "Picture me madly in love with this moving, tender, unapologetically honest book." —Becky Albertalli, #1 best-selling author of Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda Danny Cheng has always known his parents have secrets. But when he discovers a taped-up box in his father's closet filled with old letters and a file on a powerful Bay Area family, he realizes there's much more to his family's past than he ever imagined. Danny has been an artist for as long as he can remember and it seems his path is set, with a scholarship to RISD and his family's blessing to pursue the career he's always dreamed of. Still, contemplating a future without his best friend, Harry Wong, by his side makes Danny feel a panic he can barely put into words. Harry's and Danny's lives are deeply intertwined and as they approach the one-year anniversary of a tragedy that shook their friend group to its core, Danny can't stop asking himself if Harry is truly in love with his girlfriend, Regina Chan. When Danny digs deeper into his parents' past, he uncovers a secret that disturbs the foundations of his family history and the carefully constructed facade his parents have maintained begins to crumble. With everything he loves in danger of being stripped away, Danny must face the ghosts of the past in order to build a future that belongs to him in this complex, lyrical novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Donald Munro, author of important studies on early and contemporary China, provides a critical analysis of the doctrines of the Sung Neo-Confucian philosopher Chu Hsi (1130-1200). For nearly six centuries Confucian orthodoxy was based on Chu Hsi's commentaries on Confucian classics. These commentaries were the core of the curriculum studied by candidates for the civil service in China until 1905 and provided guidelines both for personal behavior and for official policy. Munro finds the key to the complexities of Chu Hsi's thought in his mode of discourse: the structural images of family, stream of water, mirror, body, plant, and ruler. Furthermore, he discloses the basic framework of Chu Hsi's ethics and the theory of human nature that is provided by these illustrative images. As revealed by Munro, Chu Hsi's thought is polarized between family duty and a broader altruism and between obedience to external authority and self-discovery of moral truth. To understand these tensions moves us toward clarifying the meaning of each idea in the sets. The interplay of these ideas, selectively emphasized over time by later Confucians, is a background for explaining modern Chinese thought. In it, among other things, Confucianism and Marxism-Leninism co-exist. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. Book Exploring Ultraviolet Photography

Download or read book Exploring Ultraviolet Photography written by David Prutchi and published by Amherst Media. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human eye perceives only light in the visible spectrum, but with specially modified cameras, lenses, and visible-light blocking filters, photographers can record ultraviolet wavelengths. In this book, author David Prutchi shows you how to select equipment that allows you to capture otherworldly UV images. You’ll learn how to use filters that block visible light and prevent infrared light leaks and will discover how supplementing or overpowering sunlight with artificial UV light sources can help you create stronger images. You’ll also learn postprocessing techniques designed to enhance your UV photographs. There is much to discover about the world as seen by bees, birds, and butterflies (and other creatures). Prutchi takes you into the wild to capture UV images that show how flowers advertise their nectar with beautiful markings to attract pollinating insects and birds. You’ll also discover how butterflies that look dull in visible light burst with intricate, iridescent patterns in UV. Finally, you’ll learn about the scientific, medical, and forensic uses of ultraviolet photography. From start to finish, this book will educate, inspire photographic creativity, and foster a better understanding of the UV world.

Book Focus On Lighting Photos

Download or read book Focus On Lighting Photos written by Fil Hunter and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered if you need to use a flash in sunlight? What the best lighting is for a macro shot? How long your exposure should be in low lighting? If you have, this book is for you! Lighting affects composition, focus, exposure decisions, and pretty much everything about taking a picture. Further, the mood of the photograph is totally dependent on the lighting - and can make or break the image. It is also one of the hardest things for a budding photographer to grasp. The existing lighting books tend to require expensive equipment and extensive knowledge on how to light photos. For those who aren't at that level yet, this guide shows how to take shots in certain settings and times, such as lighting for specific seasons, back-lighting, water lighting, available light at mid-day, and more. Loaded with photos, tips, tricks, and inspiration, you can't help but walk away from this book with the critical knowledge you need to know to take the perfect picture.

Book Photography Natural History and the Nineteenth Century Museum

Download or read book Photography Natural History and the Nineteenth Century Museum written by Kathleen Davidson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian era heralded an age of transformation in which momentous changes in the field of natural history coincided with the rise of new visual technologies. Concurrently, different parts of the British Empire began to more actively claim their right to being acknowledged as indispensable contributors to knowledge and the progress of empire. This book addresses the complex relationship between natural history and photography from the 1850s to the 1880s in Britain and its colonies: Australia, New Zealand and, to a lesser extent, India. Coinciding with the rise of the modern museum, photography’s arrival was timely, and it rapidly became an essential technology for recording and publicising rare objects and valuable collections. Also during this period, the medium assumed a more significant role in the professional practices and reputations of naturalists than has been previously recognized, and it figured increasingly within the expanding specialized networks that were central to the production and dissemination of new knowledge. In an interrogation that ranges from the first forays into museum photography and early attempts to document collecting expeditions to the importance of traditional and photographic portraiture for the recognition of scientific discoveries, this book not only recasts the parameters of what we actually identify as natural history photography in the Victorian era but also how we understand the very structure of empire in relation to this genre at that time.
