Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglophiles and students of portraiture will find that The Royal Portrait fills a surprising void in the literature, as Scott (Royal Collection) presents for the first time a survey of British portraits housed in the various venues of the Royal Collection. The broad scope ranges from Richard II (the first British king portrayed) to Queen Elizabeth II; the latter monarch, along with Queen Victoria, is the subject of an independent chapter, while other chapters focus on images of royals from a particular dynastic house, such as the Stuart and the Hanoverian. Through an interesting selection of diverse media and formats employed in different periods, Scott explores the central question of "what constitutes a royal portrait?" The answers are multifaceted and contingent on such factors as patronage, function, royal control, and artistic intention; nevertheless symbolic visual conventions can still be traced in the representations of British monarchs over the centuries. This is a clearly written, well-illustrated survey; for more in-depth analyses of particular works one will need to turn to specialized sources, e.g., D. Howarth's Images of Rule (1997). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty; general readers. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty. Reviewed by J. K. Dabbs.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures and Royal Portraits Illustrative of English and Scottish History, From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time, Vol. 2: Engraved From Important Works by Distinguished Modern Painters, and From Authentic State Portraits; With Descriptive Historical Sketches It was on the asth of May that Charles and his two brothers, the Dukes of York and Gloucester, landed near Dover, where Monk met them. The king embraced and kissed his restorer, calling him Father. On the 29th, which was Charles' birth-day, and that on which he completed his thirtieth year, he made his solemn entry into London, attended by the members of both houses, by bishops, minis ters, knights of the Bath, lord-mayor and aldermen, kettle-drums and trumpets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures and Royal Portraits Illustrative of English and Scottish History, From the Introduction of Christianity to the Present Time, Vol. 1: Engraved From Important Works by Distinguished Modern Painters, and From Authentic State Portraits, With Descriptive Historical Sketches IN any collection of Paintings, whether they belong to a private or a public gallery, it will be seen that the eager attention of most of the Visitors is at once attracted by a really good historical picture representing a well-known incident or containing the figures of some prominent actors in the national story. The reason for this is obvious. It is the peculiar province of a great work of art to appeal directly to sentiment and imagination, and where the outlines of the narrative are already known, there is an immediate gratification in receiving a vivid impression of the scene in its dramatic action, and in making closer acquaintance with the personages who were engaged in the principal event, in their habits as they lived. No ordinary reading of history can compensate for the lack of this direct interest, no mere-biographical notice can produce so distinct an impression as authentic portraits exhibiting the actual characteristics of those about whose personal appearance we have often speculated. Book excerpt: Look up! Look down! Look around you! This creative activity book for children aged 7+ will encourage drawing, writing and photography skills. The world around us is full of exciting things - people, places, shapes, patterns, colours - but so much of it passes us by. Changing the way that we look can help us see more of these great things that we usually take for granted, and notice things that can make us smile. Maybe you’ll see a particularly pretty puddle, a building with eyes and a mouth, a cloud that looks like a dog or a dog that looks like a cloud! This book will help you look closer at everything around you and to record your observations through drawing, writing and photography. The best way to use this book is to take it out and about with you, and complete the pages that work with your surroundings. It’s full of space to draw, write and stick things in and activities to complete, as well as information about artists that you may not already know. It shows that anyone can be creative and that creativity and inspiration are all around us. The book not only encourages children to create like artists but also encourages them to appreciate their surroundings. As Paul Smith says, "you can find inspiration in anything and if you can't then look again".

Book excerpt: Renaissance Bodies is a unique collection of views on the ways in which the human image has been represented in the arts and literature of English Renaissance society. The subjects discussed range from high art to popular culture - from portraits of Elizabeth I to polemical prints mocking religious fanaticism - and include miniatures, manners, anatomy, drama and architectural patronage. The authors, art historians and literary critics, reflect diverse critical viewpoints, and the 78 illustrations present a fascinating exhibition of the often strange and haunting images of the period. With essays by John Peacock, Elizabeth Honig, Andrew and Catherine Belsey, Jonathan Sawday, Susan Wiseman, Ellen Chirelstein, Tamsyn Williams, Anna Bryson, Maurice Howard and Nigel Llewellyn. "The whole book ... presents a mirror of contemporary concerns with power, the merits and demerits of individualism, sex-roles, 'selves', the meaning of community and (even) conspicuous consumption."--The Observer
