Book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers

Download or read book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers written by Sina Riecke and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picosecond laser pulses find diverse applications for example in material processing as well as in analysis and sensing. Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in particular requires pulses with variable repetition rate and moderate pulse energy. While suitable pulses in the red and blue spectral range can be provided by gain-switched laser diodes, the generation of green laser pulses requires a more elaborate setup based on second harmonic generation. The starting point is a gain-switched infrared distributed-feedback laser diode. The optimization of the laser design and the operating conditions allows to generate spectrally narrow picosecond pulses with a peak power above 1 W. Different gain media are compared for further amplification of these pulses, and options for the miniaturization of the master-oscillator power-amplifier system are explored. The resulting intense infrared pulses are then used for second harmonic generation of green picoseconds pulses. Their peak power of above 5 W exceeds all previous green pulse sources with variable repetition rate. In terms of pulse energy and background suppression, the reported green pulses are thus ideally suited for fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy

Picosecond laser-induced transformations of modulated metal energy fluence. Picosecond laser-induced transformations of modulated metal films extend the glass formation range. New glassy alloys have been formed. Keywords include: Laser-materials interactions, Picosecond pulses, Metallic and semiconductor surfaces, Phase transitions, and Ultrafast heating and cooling.

Book Study of Infrared Nonlinear Processes in Semiconductors

Download or read book Study of Infrared Nonlinear Processes in Semiconductors written by P. A. Wolff and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of the program is to discover materials and/or structures with large, fast nonlinear optic susceptibilities. Such elements are required in optical signal processing systems, and for protection of imaging devices. The program is mainly experimental, with supporting theoretical work. Tests of nonlinear crystals also provide important information concerning carrier kinetics in semiconductors, through the difference frequency variation of X(3). In the past year, we have used this technique to determine carrier relaxation times, in the picosecond range, in n-Si :P and HgTe. Where appropriate, we investigate the device implications of optical-semiconductor interactions. Our studies of free carrier, spin-induced Faraday rotation, were motivated by the possibility of using this effect in tunable IR filters and CO2 laser isolators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second International Conference on Trends in Quantum Electron ics (TQE'85) was held in Bucharest at the National Centre for Physics in September 1985, and brought together more than 350 scientists from 22 countries. In accordance with the objectives established at the first conference, which was held in 1982 in conjunction with the third International Summer School in Coherent Optics, the second conference con centrated upon the central topics and chief directions of development in quantum electronics - which stands out as an area of science and technology that is currently expanding vigorously. On the other hand, it was also apparent that TQE'85 was primarily influenced by the worldwide celebration, in 1985, of the 25th anniversary of the laser - a moment of prime importance in the development of many frontline fields, including communications, chemistry, biology, health care and materials processing. A special session was devoted to this anniversary. In keeping with the dynamic spirit of the conference, the fine quality of the invited lectures and the other contributions set a high scientific standard for the proceedings. Mention should be made of the posters that were presented throughout the conference. These, together with the exhibition of books and journals and a display of specialized scientific equipment, did much to create a framework for effective communication and stimulating interaction, to the benefit of all the participants. Of invaluable help in the preparation of the conference was the collaboration of the International Scientific Advisory Committee.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Lasers and Applications was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 29 June to 3 July 1980. This conference was held to commemorate the memory of Professor Sergio Porto who died suddenly about one year earlier while attending a laser conference in the Soviet Union. The sub ject matter covered the active areas of laser devices, photochemistry, non linear optics, high-resolution spectroscopy, photokinetics, photobiology, photomedicine, optical communication, optical bistability, and Raman spec troscopy. The conference was attended by over 150 people including scientists from Japan, France, England, West Germany, Norway, Italy, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, India, Canada, and the United States. Amemorial session attended by members of the Porto family and ranking Brazilian government dignitaries preceded the start of the conference. The location of the conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was chosen be cause it was in the homeland of Sergio Porto and provided an opportunity for his friends, colleagues, and countryrnen to pay hornage to hirn. The setting on Copacabana Beach afforded access to the lovely beaches, restaurants, and nightlife of one of the most beautiful and exciting cities of the world. There were tours of the city together with a banquet that featured a performance by one of the best Samba Schools in Rio. Financial support from many sponsors in Brazil and the United States is gratefully acknowledged in making this working conference a fitting tribute to the memory of Professor S.P.S. Porto.

Book Laser Science and Technology

Download or read book Laser Science and Technology written by A.N. Chester and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference "Laser Science and Technology" was held May 11-19, 1987 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 12th conference organized by the Internatio nal School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. This volume contains both the in vited and contributed papers presented at the conference, covering current research work in two areas: new laser sources, and laser applications. The operation of the first laser by Dr. Theodore Maiman in 1960 initia ted a decade of scientific exploration of new laser sources. This was fol lowed by the decade of the 1970s, which was characterized by "technology push" in which the discoveries of the 1960s were seeking practical applica tion. In the 1980s we are instead seeking "applications pull," in which the success and rapid maturing of laser applications provides both inspiration and financial resources to stimulate additional work both on laser sources and applications. The papers presented in these Proceedings attest to the great vitali ty of research in both these areas: New Laser Sources. The papers describe current developments in ultra violet excimer lasers, X-ray lasers, and free electron lasers. These new lasers share several characteristics: each is a potentially important coher ent source; each is at a relatively short wavelength (below 1 micrometer); and each is receiving significant development attention today.
