Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to all who play pickup hockey and, who given enough time, energy and help, could easily write a book like this one. As you read this collection of pickup hockey memories, anecdotes and insights, you may think, "been there, done that." Our experiences are almost national if not universal. A pickup hockey team is not part of an organized league, there are no referees, no stats are kept and there is no score keeper. Most pickup teams are organized by a small group of guys for the love of the game. They will gather enough players, usually 20 skaters and 2 goaltenders, by invitation, so that the group is closed and they own the ice-time. Some rinks offer off-peak hours for 'shinny', a kind of pickup hockey that is open to all comers. Pick Up Hockey presents experiences in the arena, suggests how to pick, teams, how to play with few players, how to know when to quit playing with the younger group, acknowledges that the end will come and much more. Bryan Patterson is a practicing nuclear power engineer who finds the time to play pick up hockey three times a week. He had lots of help with ideas for this book from his hockey playing buddies. Devin runs into Sasha, a summer league teammate of hers, who confides that the Roses’ coach doesn’t seem to care that they’re losing and asks Devin for help. She invites the Roses to a weekend soccer clinic that the Kicks are going to. Book The Case Against the Democratic House Impeaching Trump

Download or read book The Case Against the Democratic House Impeaching Trump written by Alan Dershowitz and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author! One of America’s most respected legal scholars—a Democrat—explains why impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump would be a bad idea for America. In the 2018 New York Times bestseller The Case Against Impeaching Trump, Alan Dershowitz lamented how American political discourse has devolved into hypocrisy and the criminalization of political differences in the rush to impeach President Trump. Arguments to impeach Trump failed Dershowitz’s “shoe on the other foot test,” or his political golden rule: Democrats must do unto Republicans what they would have Republicans do unto them, and vice versa. Since then, we’ve only become more divided—and the impeachment power wielded by the Democratic majority in the House of Representative threatens to further polarize the country. The Case Against the Democratic House Impeaching Trump includes and expands upon Dershowitz’s 2018 book. It puts recent political events, including the hyper-partisan Kavanaugh hearings, the unrestrained power of the Mueller investigation, and the generally intolerant current political discourse, into context. American democracy, Dershowitz argues, is suffering from political hypocrisy. And two years of impeachment proceedings brought by the House, and the media circus that would undoubtedly surround them, is clearly not the answer. This book is Alan Dershowitz’s plea for honest dialogue, for arguments that would be made even if the shoe was on the other foot.

Book excerpt: From the author of the award-winning Game Changer comes a gripping novel about two student-athletes searching for stardom, a young reporter searching for the truth, and a crosstown basketball rivalry that goes too far The people of Walthorne love their basketball—and one of the things they love most is the special rivalry between the Walthorne North Middle School Cougars and the Walthorne South Middle School Panthers. As the season begins, two star players are feeling the heat: Austin Chambers, captain of Walthorne North, worries that he’s not good enough to live up to his father’s legacy, while across town, the brilliantly talented Carter Haswell, captain of Walthorne South, is already under pressure to get a scholarship that might ease his family’s financial stress. While both boys do whatever they can to make sure their team wins, Alfie Jenks, a school sports reporter, discovers that behind-the-scenes scandals are just as much a part of youth sports as on-the-court action. When she blows the story wide open, the whole season is jeopardized. Told through a series of flashbacks, newspaper reports, social media posts, and interviews, Rivals will have readers tearing through the pages to see what happens next—and asking themselves if winning has become more important than doing the right thing.
