Book excerpt: When he was young, he said, "I grant you a lifetime of glory." She refused. "I am of noble birth, and I have no lack of gold or silver." He said, "Then I grant you the only love in the world." She smiled sweetly. "Alright. You said it, you can't go back on your word. " He hugged her. "Never go back on your word." When he returned to the capital, he would face the battles of the palace, the struggles of the houses, his loved ones, his power, his desires ... Her intelligence had become the capital of planning, but it was all for the protection of the people closest to her. Imperial authority, power, he had plotted step by step just to be able to protect her in the open. When things got out of her control step by step, what would she and he choose? What would the grudges of the previous generation bring to them? Could they not forget their original intentions and stay together until they become old? Thinking back to the past, she looked at him, smiling sadly. "Let go, I'm tired from love." "Don't even think about it." Xuanyuan Yi Chen ignored her struggles and forcefully imprisoned her within his embrace, "Since you've provoked me, you shouldn't even think about escaping for the rest of your life." He bit her lips.

Book Sensing Injustice

Download or read book Sensing Injustice written by Michael E. Tigar and published by Monthly Review Press. This book was released on 2021-07-22 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable life of a lawyer at the forefront of civil and human rights since the 1960s By the time he was 26, Michael Tigar was a legend in legal circles well before he would take on some of the highest-profile cases of his generation. In his first US Supreme Court case—at the age of 28—Tigar won a unanimous victory that freed thousands of Vietnam War resisters from prison. Tigar also led the legal team that secured a judgment against the Pinochet regime for the 1976 murders of Pinochet opponent Orlando Letelier and his colleague Ronni Moffitt in a Washington, DC car bombing. He then worked with the lawyers who prosecuted Pinochet for torture and genocide. A relentless fighter of injustice—not only as a human rights lawyer, but also as a teacher, scholar, journalist, playwright, and comrade—Tigar has been counsel to Angela Davis, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin (H. Rap Brown), the Chicago Eight, and leaders of the Black Panther Party, to name only a few. It is past time that Michael Tigar wrote his memoir. Sensing Injustice: A Lawyer's Life in the Battle for Change is a vibrant literary and legal feat. In it, Tigar weaves powerful legal analysis and wry observation through the story of his remarkable life. The result is a compelling narrative that blends law, history, and progressive politics. This is essential reading for lawyers, for law students, for anyone who aspires to bend the law toward change.

Book Ignorance is Bliss The Chinese Art of Not Knowing

Download or read book Ignorance is Bliss The Chinese Art of Not Knowing written by Mieke Matthyssen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the popular, yet puzzling, Chinese saying Nande hutu 难得糊涂 to uncover how the ancient Chinese wisdom of not knowing is constructed, interpreted, practiced and valued in contemporary society. Originating in the calligraphy of Qing-dynasty scholar Zheng Banqiao, Nande hutu translates literally as: “hard to attain muddle-headedness”. Mieke Matthyssen traces the historical development of this saying and related philosophies to reveal a culturally conditioned, multi-layered inclination to different forms of not knowing. In contemporary society, she argues, this inclination forms part of a living art: in some respects, a passive, evasive strategy for self-preservation; in other respects, a strategy for coping with intrapersonal, interpersonal and social complexities. Drawing on an extensive range of primary sources and original research, the analysis skillfully combines philosophical and socio-historical analysis with theory from Chinese philosophy, philosophical psychology and the relatively new field of indigenous psychology, to provide an in-depth understanding of how Nande hutu has shaped, and continues to shape, the Chinese psyche and behaviour. This book will appeal to all readers looking for fresh insights into Chinese culture, and in particular to students and scholars of Chinese and Asian studies, cultural and social anthropology, and philosophical and indigenous psychology.

Book IS THE AUTHOR REALLY DEAD

Download or read book IS THE AUTHOR REALLY DEAD written by Zhang Jiang and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-01-10 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roland Barthes declared that “the author is dead.” Professor Zhang Jiang challenges this statement by asking “is the author really dead?” In contemporary Western theories of literature and art, the relationship among the author, the text and the reader is not only a theoretical issue, but a matter of epistemology and philosophy with a broad background and rich connotations. Is the Author Really Dead? Textual Research into Contemporary Western Literary Theories analyzes the inadequacies and problems of contemporary Western literary theory and calls for realignment in this field. It argues that the root of the insurmountable conflict between Western literary theory and Chinese literary theory lies in what Professor Zhang terms “compulsory interpretation,” the recognition and repudiation of which should form the cornerstone of reconstructing contemporary Chinese literary theory.

Book Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture

Download or read book Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture written by Xiaofei Tian and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of a 2006 Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Title Award As medieval Chinese manuscripts were copied and recopied through the centuries, both mistakes and deliberate editorial changes were introduced, thereby affecting readers' impressions of the author's intent. In Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture, Xiaofei Tian shows how readers not only experience authors but produce them by shaping texts to their interpretation. Tian examines the mechanics and history of textual transmission in China by focusing on the evolution over the centuries of the reclusive poet Tao Yuanming into a figure of epic stature. Considered emblematic of the national character, Tao Yuanming (also known as Tao Qian, 365?-427 c.e.) is admired for having turned his back on active government service and city life to live a simple rural life of voluntary poverty. The artlessness of his poetic style is held as the highest literary and moral ideal, and literary critics have taken great pains to demonstrate perfect consistency between Tao Yuanming's life and poetry. Earlier work on Tao Yuanming has tended to accept this image, interpreting the poems to confirm the image. Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture is a study of how this cultural icon was produced and of the elusive traces of another, historical Tao Yuanming behind the icon. By comparing four early biographies of the poet, Tian shows how these are in large measure constructed out of Tao Yuanming's self-image as projected in his poetry and prose. Drawing on work in European medieval literature, she demonstrates the fluidity of the Chinese medieval textual world and how its materials were historically reconfigured for later purposes. Tian finds in Tao's poetic corpus not one essentialized Tao Yuanming, but multiple texts continuously produced long after the author's physical demise. Her provocative look at the influence of manuscript culture on literary perceptions transcends its immediate subject and has special resonance today, when the transition from print to electronic media is shaking the literary world in a way not unlike the transition from handwritten to print media in medieval China.

Book A Companion to The Story of the Stone

Download or read book A Companion to The Story of the Stone written by Kenneth Hsien-Yung Pai and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of the Stone (also known as Dream of the Red Chamber) is widely held to be the greatest work of Chinese literature, beloved by readers ever since it was first published in 1791. The story revolves around the young scion of a mighty clan who, instead of studying for the civil service examinations, frolics with his maidservants and girl cousins. The narrative is cast within a mythic framework in which the protagonist’s rebellion against Confucian strictures is guided by a Buddhist monk and a Taoist priest. Embedded in the novel is a biting critique of imperial China’s political and social system. This book is a straightforward guide to a complex classic that was written at a time when readers had plenty of leisure to sort through the hundreds of characters and half a dozen subplots that weave in and out of the book’s 120 chapters. Each chapter of the companion summarizes and comments on each chapter of the novel. The companion provides English-speaking readers—whether they are simply dipping into this novel or intent on a deep analysis of this masterpiece—with the cultural context to enjoy the story and understand its world. The book is keyed to David Hawkes and John Minford’s English translation of The Story of the Stone and includes an index that gives the original Chinese names and terms.
