Book Physiological Foundations

Download or read book Physiological Foundations written by Gellhorn and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demonized by governments and the media as criminals, glorified within their own subculture as outlaws, hackers have played a major role in the short history of computers and digital culture-and have continually defied our assumptions about technology and secrecy through both legal and illicit means. In Hacker Culture, Douglas Thomas provides an in-depth history of this important and fascinating subculture, contrasting mainstream images of hackers with a detailed firsthand account of the computer underground. Addressing such issues as the commodification of the hacker ethos by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, the high-profile arrests of prominent hackers, and conflicting self-images among hackers themselves, Thomas finds that popular hacker stereotypes reflect the public's anxieties about the information age far more than they do the reality of hacking.

Download or read book EEG fMRI written by Christoph Mulert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and Electronecephalography (EEG) are very important and complementary modalities since fMRI offers high spatial resolution and EEG is a direct measurement of neuronal activity with high temporal resolution. Interest in the integration of both types of data is growing rapidly as it promises to provide important new insights into human brain activity as it has already done so in the field of epilepsy. The availability of good quality instrumentation capable of providing interference-free data in both modalities means that electrophysiological and haemodynamic characteristics of individual brain events can be captured for the first time. Consequently, it seems certain that the integration of fMRI and EEG will play an increasing role in neuroscience and of the clinical study of brain disorders such as epilepsy. The proposed book will discuss in detail the physiological principles, practical aspects of measurement, artefact reduction and analysis and also applications of the integration of fMRI and EEG. All applications, which are mainly in the fields of sleep research, cognitive neuroscience and clinical use in neurology and psychiatry will be reviewed.

Book The Physiological Basis of Memory

Download or read book The Physiological Basis of Memory written by J. Anthony Deutsch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiological Basis of Memory, Second Edition reviews many areas of research that shed light on the physiological basis of memory, from mnemonic function and memory facilitation to synaptic transmission. The book also considers neuropsychology involving animal subjects, learning produced by direct brain stimulation, and the basis of associative learning at the cellular level. This edition is organized into 10 chapters and begins with an overview of the link between protein synthesis and memory, paying attention to studies devoted to chemical changes associated with learning; the effect of inhibitors of RNA and protein synthesis on learning; the molecular code of memory; and the role of proteins in learning. The reader is methodically introduced to the enhancement of memory consolidation; the use of the cellular-connection approach to investigate both non-associative and associative learning; and the effect of depression on memory storage. The following chapters discuss the impact of brain lesions on animal memory; the neurology of memory and amnesia in human and nonhuman primates; the function of the neural substrate for self-stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle; and the effects of electroconvulsive shock on memory. A chapter on the role of catecholamines in memory processing concludes the book. This book should be useful to researchers and students interested in the physiology of memory.

Book Approaches to Cross Cultural Psychiatry

Download or read book Approaches to Cross Cultural Psychiatry written by Jane M. Murphy and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From specialists in several disciplines—psychiatry, general medicine, anthropology, sociology, and social work—the editors of this volume have assembled reports on a search for ways of identifying mentally ill people in other cultures and of determining what kinds of sociocultural factors influence the origin, course, and outcome of psychiatric disorders. The contributors have approached the subject through reviews of the literature, seminar discussions, and exploratory field studies carried out in Nova Scotia and among Eskimos, Navahos, and Mexicans. The book provides a methodological approach to important issues and problems in an area in which there is as yet only limited and uncertain knowledge. It will be useful to psychiatrists and epidemiologists working outside their own cultures, to psychologists and anthropologists, and as a handbook for specialists in mental health.

Book Pupillary Dynamics and Behavior

Download or read book Pupillary Dynamics and Behavior written by Michel Janisse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Manitoba Symposium on Pupillometry was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, October 17-19, 1973. The seed of the idea was planted in 1967 when Raymond Daly of the University of Windsor first interested me in the utility of the pupil as a dependent measure in psychology. From that time on I have read as much as possible about the pupil and in late 1971 it occurred to me that it might be a good idea to bring together those pupil lary investigators whose research had the greatest impression upon me. This book is one of happier consequences of the Symposium. The guiding principle behind the selection of participants was a blend of three considerations: (1) long standing research or scholarly interest in problems associated with the eye and the pupil; (2) outstanding respect of the participant by his colleagues involved in pupillometric research; and (3) significant contributions to the learned literature.

Book Cultures of Psychiatry and Mental Health Care in Postwar Britain and The Netherlands

Download or read book Cultures of Psychiatry and Mental Health Care in Postwar Britain and The Netherlands written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-psychiatry' is a movement more sloganized than analysed. Until now it has been associated in the English-speaking world primarily with R.D. Laing and a coterie of his associates, and a radical critique not just of psychiatric hospitalization but of the very premises of psychiatry itself and the basic institutions of society, especially the family. But are these notions accurate, or rather distorted images, created by Laing himself or by the media? In this book, which has emerged out of an Anglo-Dutch conference held in June 1997, the realities of critical psychiatry are explored, using comparisons and contrasts between the British and the Dutch experiences as a probe. There were, it turns out, various distinct anti-psychiatries - indeed, hardly anybody actually used that label about themselves - and they played a role in the reform no less than the rejection of regular psychiatry.
