Book Schizophrenia An Issue of Psychiatric Clinics E Book

Download or read book Schizophrenia An Issue of Psychiatric Clinics E Book written by Peter F. Buckley and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2012-09-16 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major shift in approaching Schizophrenia has been witnessed among psychiatrists with the belief now that early diagnosis and intervention may have a positive influence on the outcome of schizophrenia. The search for key diagnostic clusters to enhance early diagnosis is underway as well as concerted efforts to find biomarkers of disease and disease progression. To address this, this issue of the Psychiatric Clinics of North America presents distinguished academic clinicians and neuroscientists who provide comprehensive overviews of the present state of knowledge on the epidemiology, early clinical characteristics, and diagnostic changes, proposed pathogenesis, neurobiology, and treatment requirements for this disorder. The current state of knowledge is substantial, academically credible, and scientifically based. Topics on the subject of early intervention in and diagnosis of schizophrenia include: Nosology of Schizophrenia: Defining Illness Boundaries Based upon Symptoms; Neurodevelopmental Hypothesis of Schizophrenia; Predicting Risk and the Emergence of Schizophrenia; Is Early Intervention for Psychosis Feasible and Effective?; Can Neuroimaging Be Used to Define Phenotypes and Course of Schizophrenia?; Reliable Biomarkers and Predictors of Schizophrenia and Its Treatment; From Study to Practice: Enhancing Clinical Trials Methods Toward ‘Real World’ Outcomes; Relapse Prevention in Schizophrenia; Antipsychotic Polypharmacy; Cognitive Remediation: Retraining the Brain in Schizophrenia; Peers and Peer-led Interventions; Homelessness; and The Emerging Role of Technology and Social Media in Caring for People with Schizophrenia. Each presentation in this publication includes an Overview, Implications for Practice, with Summarizations of Important Clinical and Learning Points.

Book The Other Side of the Error Term

Download or read book The Other Side of the Error Term written by N. Raz and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-04-23 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been said more than once in psychology that one person's effect is another person's error term. By minimising and occasionally ignoring individual and group variability cognitive psychology has yieled many fine achievements. However, when investigators are working with special populations, the subjects, and the unique nature of the sample, come into focus and become the goal in itself. For developmental psychologists, gerontologists and psychopathologists, research progresses with an eye on their target populations of study. Yet every good study in any of these domains inevitably has another dimension. Whenever a study is designed to turn a spotlight on a special population, the light is also shed on the mainstream from which the target deviates. This book examines what we can learn about general and universal phenomena in cognition and its brain substrates from examining the odd, the rare, the transient, the exceptional and the abnormal.

Book Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia

Download or read book Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia written by Heinz Häfner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the contributions to the third symposium on the "Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia". The first symposium was organized by the Central Institute of Mental Health on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg in 1986. Its objective was to give an overview of the rapid development in schizophrenia research in a situation characterized by an excessive variety of methods and topics. It was our intention, through substantial contributions to topical areas of schizophrenia research and through intensive discussions, to further the exohange of hypotheses and results and thus open up ways towards new concepts integrating different methodological approaches or towards new models of explanation. The first symposium was a great success. The publication of the proceedings (Hafner et al. 1987) was received with enthusiasm and recommended in leading journals "as the best available state-of-the-art analysis of current research on the aetiology of schizophrenia". For this reason we held a second and a third symposium entitled "Search for the Causes of Schizophrenia" under the same auspices and at the same place in 1989 and 1993.

Book Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Download or read book Obsessive Compulsive Disorder written by Wayne K. Goodman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-25 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obsessive-compulsive disorder is now recognized to be a serious and chronic illness affecting more than 2% of the population. In this volume, originally published in 2000, leading authorities offer a comprehensive, cutting-edge overview of etiology, diagnosis, assessment, and the latest cognitive-behavioral, biological, and combined approaches to intervention. A special focus is treatment-resistant illness. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Contemporary Issues in Treatment will be an indispensable resource for all professionals who seek better solutions to the often seemingly intractable problems of their OCD clients.

Book Fundamentals of Neural Network Modeling

Download or read book Fundamentals of Neural Network Modeling written by Randolph W. Parks and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides an introduction to the neural network modeling of complex cognitive and neuropsychological processes. Over the past few years, computer modeling has become more prevalent in the clinical sciences as an alternative to traditional symbol-processing models. This book provides an introduction to the neural network modeling of complex cognitive and neuropsychological processes. It is intended to make the neural network approach accessible to practicing neuropsychologists, psychologists, neurologists, and psychiatrists. It will also be a useful resource for computer scientists, mathematicians, and interdisciplinary cognitive neuroscientists. The editors (in their introduction) and contributors explain the basic concepts behind modeling and avoid the use of high-level mathematics. The book is divided into four parts. Part I provides an extensive but basic overview of neural network modeling, including its history, present, and future trends. It also includes chapters on attention, memory, and primate studies. Part II discusses neural network models of behavioral states such as alcohol dependence, learned helplessness, depression, and waking and sleeping. Part III presents neural network models of neuropsychological tests such as the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task, the Tower of Hanoi, and the Stroop Test. Finally, part IV describes the application of neural network models to dementia: models of acetycholine and memory, verbal fluency, Parkinsons disease, and Alzheimer's disease. Contributors J.
