This book places the Physiocrats in context by inscribing economic theory within broader Enlightenment culture. Liana Vardi discusses three theorists - Francois Quesnay; Victor Riquetti, marquis de Mirabeau; and Pierre Samuel Du Pont de Nemours - and shows how their understanding of mental processes, science, politics and the arts influenced their individual approach to economic writing. The difficulty in explaining the doctrine, combined with the expectation that the public would be persuaded by its arguments, mired physiocracy in endless contradictions. This work offers a framework for understanding physiocratic theory and its complicated relation to modern economics.

Book excerpt: Karl Marx’s History of Economic Theories from the Physiocrats to Adam Smith is Part I of the legendary but previously untranslated Volume IV of Marx’s Capital. Although it was written some ninety years ago, it remained unpublished until the first German edition appeared in 1904. Originally, Marx had intended to prepare the first three volumes for publication, then, from the remaining mass of manuscript, to extract a final volume constituting a history of theories of surplus value. Engels, who became Marx’s literary executor, was unable to follow this plan during his lifetime and assigned the task to Kautsky. Kautsky, however, found it impossible to carry out the project in the form intended. Much of the material indicated by Marx and Engels for inclusion in Volume IV had already been covered, in part at least, in the three preceding volumes. Consequently, the work as it now stands does not follow Marx’s precise plan. It is more comprehensive in scope, deals with economic theories whose relation to surplus value and profit is not immediate, and more closely approaches a complete and critical history of economic theories than the narrower concept which Marx had had in mind.

Book excerpt: In his fourth edition of Éléménts d'économie politique pure (1900), León Walras introduced the device of written pledges to eliminate path dependency: sellers of products and services write out commitments to supply certain quantities at suggested prices with no commodities actually produced and supplied until a set of prices is found at which supply and demand are equal simultaneously in every market. This brought about very serious alterations to the character of the book. Unfortunately, these changes resulted in an incomplete, internally contradictory, and occasionally incoherent text. This translation, therefore, by two leading scholars of León Walras' work, Donald A. Walker and Jan van Daal, revisits the third edition of this seminal work, including Walras' brilliant explanation of his comprehensive model, with all its richness derived from reality. Growing research into Walras' work indicates that it was this third edition that contained his best theoretical research and a translation of this edition of the book is now a necessity.
