Book Physics Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Physics Teaching and Learning written by Dennis W. Sunal and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physics Teaching and Learning: Challenging the Paradigm, RISE Volume 8, focuses on research contributions challenging the basic assumptions, ways of thinking, and practices commonly accepted in physics education. Teaching physics involves multifaceted, research-based, value added strategies designed to improve academic engagement and depth of learning. In this volume, researchers, teaching and curriculum reformers, and reform implementers discuss a range of important issues. The volume should be considered as a first step in thinking through what physics teaching and physics learning might address in teacher preparation programs, in-service professional development programs, and in classrooms. To facilitate thinking about research-based physics teaching and learning each chapter in the volume was organized around five common elements: 1. A significant review of research in the issue or problem area. 2. Themes addressed are relevant for the teaching and learning of K-16 science 3. Discussion of original research by the author(s) addressing the major theme of the chapter. 4. Bridge gaps between theory and practice and/or research and practice. 5. Concerns and needs are addressed of school/community context stakeholders including students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community members.

Book Modern Physics And Technology For Undergraduates Second Edition

Download or read book Modern Physics And Technology For Undergraduates Second Edition written by Lorcan M Folan and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A huge chasm has developed between modern science and undergraduate education. The result of this chasm is that students who are graduating from college are unable to exploit the many opportunities offered by modern science and technology. Modern science and technology widely uses the methods of classical physics, but these modern applications are not reflected in the physics problems often suggested to students. Solving practical problems is a very effective way to inform students about contemporary science, to illustrate the important relationships between modern and classical physics, and to prepare them for future activity in the modern technological environment. The aim of this book is to try to bridge this chasm between modern science and technology and an undergraduate course in physics. The first part of the book gives an overview of 'hot' directions in modern physics and technology. The second part includes a brief review of undergraduate physics, followed by problems which are related to those directions. These problems, which are based on some of the latest developments in science and technology, can be solved using the classical physics accessible in a standard undergraduate program. Where necessary, the problems have detailed solutions. The second edition of Modern Physics and Technology for Undergraduates includes six new subsections dealing with the most recent developments in science, and a fully updated and expanded list of problems.

Book The Effectiveness of Contextual Learning on Physics Achievement in Career Technical Education

Download or read book The Effectiveness of Contextual Learning on Physics Achievement in Career Technical Education written by Scott A. Arcand and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this casual-comparative study was to determine if students being taught the Minnesota Science Physics Standards via contextual learning methods in Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Principles of Engineering or the PLTW Aerospace Engineering courses, taught by a Career Technical Education (CTE) teacher, achieve at the same rate as students in a physics course taught by a science teacher. The PLTW courses only cover the standards taught in the first trimester of physics. The PLTW courses are two periods long for one trimester. Students who successfully pass the PLTW Principles of Engineering course or the PLTW Engineering Aerospace course earn one-half credit in physics and one-half elective credit. The instrument used to measure student achievement was the district common summative assessment for physics. The Common Summative Assessment scores were pulled from the data warehouse from the first trimester of the 2013-2014 school year. Implications of the research address concepts of contextual learning especially in the Career Technical Education space. The mean score for Physics students (30.916) and PLTW Principles of Engineering students (32.333) was not statistically significantly different. Students in PLTW Principles of Engineering achieved at the same rate as students in physics. Due to the low rate of students participating in the Common Summative Assessment in PTLW Aerospace (four out of seven students), there is not enough data to determine if there is a significant difference in the Physics A scores and PLTW Aerospace Engineering scores.

Book Conceptual Connections in Teaching of Technical Education and Physics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper considers the main characteristics of contents' connections between technical education and physics curricula, in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade of the Serbian primary school. The undertaken logical and didactic analyses of interconnectedness between contents structure of the two school subjects are based upon comparisons which have made between contents' interconnectedness of the crucial scientific concepts, their scope and construction. The observed scientific concepts in the two school subjects appear to be essential for technical education teaching and physics teaching in primary school. It should be very important to establish adequate contents' and scientific concepts' connections between knowledge in the two fields of teaching, for the quality of curricula and the efficiency of their implementation in technical education teaching and physics teaching in primary school. Book New Trends in Physics Education Research

Download or read book New Trends in Physics Education Research written by Salvatore Magazù and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those who operate in physics education frequently ask research operators for suggestions, reference models, updated content and answers for their professional work. So far, the sector has not achieved significant advances specifically in terms of both content updates and methodology approaches. In the special issue, titled New Trends in Physics Education Research, the authors, in addition to presenting some new topics in physics education, take into account the greater relevance that in recent years the Evidence Based Education has taken place. In this framework, the main points of issue include: 1) Dealing with new trends in teaching and learning processes in physics; highlighting new mathematics content for physics courses; 3) giving evidence of the key role played by laboratory activities in physics training courses; and 4) stressing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches as well as scientific culture, communication and dissemination. Physics teaching involves several fields and different disciplines (such as mathematics, philosophy, laboratory activities, etc.) where the same arguments are often explained without clarifying that often there is a close correlation between disciplines. In particular, an integrated theoretical and experimental approach can improve the knowledge of some subjects of physics and mathematics; furthermore, it is also useful to employ a joint approach with laboratory activities, and by doing so enriching topics of meaning. In such cases, mathematics provides the adapt tools for physics and also is able to drive physical intuition; on the other hand, physics and its laboratory activities provide simple access to mathematical topics of complex comprehension. The issue is addressed to academics and schoolteachers as well as researchers in the field of physics education.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: ought to be included in what is taught by the school. In physics, for instance, how could the steam- engine be so well understood as by its presence in the workshop, and the analysis of its parts and powers explained in motion ? How could picture-making, by the aid of a sunbeam, be so easily learned a from the camera of an actual operator; or the wonderl'ul results of electricity, as when worked out by instruments intended for the illustration of these phenomena? It becomes evident by such examples that science U not the exclusive monopoly of the learned, but that it belongs to every man, woman, and child who passes through the public schools, and thai it is as much a part of art and industry as of philosophy and physic. Having mentioned the city and guilds of London Institute, I again advert to it as probably the most complete scheme of technical education that has been devised. It originated with the guilds or trades of the metropolis; and their principal object is to promote the advancement of technical education in the United Kingdom by a system of laboratory and workshop instruction with explanatory lectures, both in the daytime and in the evening, for the benefit of those who are engaged, or are about to be engaged, in industrial pursuits. The Finebury Technical College is one of its adjuncts, and it establishes other branches, or assists those already established, in various parts of the country, with both means and teachers; and confers certificates upon all persons who can successfully pass examinations which it conducts in all the principal towns and cities where a sufficient number of those who are competent can be found. This work it has successfully prosecuted for the last three years, and it promises more for the future to the industrial classes than any other sys...
