Book The Euroschool Lectures on Physics with Exotic Beams Vol III

Download or read book The Euroschool Lectures on Physics with Exotic Beams Vol III written by J.S. Al-Khalili and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third and ?nal volume in a series of Lecture Notes based on the highlysuccessfulEuroSummerSchoolonExoticBeamsthathasbeenrunning yearly since 1993 (apart from 1999) and is planned to continue to do so. It is the aim of the series to provide an introduction to Radioactive Ion Beam (RIB) physics at the level of graduate students and young postdocs starting out in the ?eld. Each volume contains lectures covering a range of topics from nuclear theory to experiment to applications. Our understanding of atomic nuclei has undergone a major re-orientation over the past two decades and seen the emergence of an exciting ?eld of research: the study of ‘exotic’ nuclei. The availability of energetic beams of short-lived nuclei, referred to as ‘radioactive ion beams’ (RIBs), has opened the way to the study of the structure and dynamics of thousands of nuclear species never before observed in the laboratory. This ?eld has now become one of the most important and fast-moving in physics worldwide. And it is fair to say that Europe leads the way with a number of large international projects starting up in the next few years, such as the FAIR facility at GSI in Germany. From a broader perspective, one must also highlight just how widely RIB physics impacts on other areas, from energy and the environment to medicine and materials science.

Book excerpt: Describes the branch of astronomy in which processes in the universe are investigated with experimental methods employed in particle-physics experiments. After a historical introduction the basics of elementary particles, Explains particle interactions and the relevant detection techniques, while modern aspects of astroparticle physics are described in a chapter on cosmology. Provides an orientation in the field of astroparticle physics that many beginners might seek and appreciate because the underlying physics fundamentals are presented with little mathematics, and the results are illustrated by many diagrams. Readers have a chance to enter this field of astronomy with a book that closes the gap between expert and popular level.

Book The Language of Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Garber
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461217660
  • Pages : 410 pages

Download or read book The Language of Physics written by Elizabeth Garber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the first explicit examination of the key role that mathematics has played in the development of theoretical physics and will undoubtedly challenge the more conventional accounts of its historical development. Although mathematics has long been regarded as the "language" of physics, the connections between these independent disciplines have been far more complex and intimate than previous narratives have shown. The author convincingly demonstrates that practices, methods, and language shaped the development of the field, and are a key to understanding the mergence of the modern academic discipline. Mathematicians and physicists, as well as historians of both disciplines, will find this provocative work of great interest.

Book Physics of Solid Solution Strengthening

Download or read book Physics of Solid Solution Strengthening written by E. Collings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the proceedings of a Symposium entitled "The Physics of Solid-Solution Strengthening in Alloys" which was held at McCormick Place, Chicago, on October 2, 1973, in association with a joint meeting of the American Society for Metals (ASM) and The Metallurgical Society (TMS) of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). The symposium, which was initiated and organized by the editors of this volume, was sponsored by the Committee on Alloy Phases, Institute of Metals Division, TMS, AIME, and the Flow and Fracture Section of the Materials Science Division, ASM. The discipline of Alloy Design has been very active in recent years, during which considerable stress has been placed on the roles of crystallography and microstructure in the rationalization and prediction of properties. Underestimated as a component of alloy design, however, has been the importance of physical property studies, even though physical property measurements have tradi tionally been employed to augment direct or x-ray observations in the determination of phase equilibrium (and, indeed, metastable equilibrium) boundaries.

Book Atomic and Nuclear Physics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Albert Littlefield
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468414704
  • Pages : 513 pages

Download or read book Atomic and Nuclear Physics written by Thomas Albert Littlefield and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of Dr. Littlefield it was decided that I should undertake the revision ofthe whole of Atomic and Nuclear Physics: an Introduction for the third edition, and it was soon apparent that major changes were necessary. I am confident that these changes would have had Dr. Littlefield's approval. The prime consideration for the present edition has been to modernize at a minimum cost. As much as possible of the second edition has therefore been retained, but where changes have been made they have been fairly drastic. Thus the chapters on fine structure, wave mechanics, the vector model of the atom, Pauli's principle and the Zeeman effect have been completely restructured. The chapters on nuclear models, cosmic rays, fusion systems and fundamental particles have been brought up to date while a new chapter on charm and the latest ideas on quarks has been included. It is hoped that the presentation of the last named will give readers a feeling that physics research can be full of adventure and surprises.

Book Basic Concepts in Computational Physics

Download or read book Basic Concepts in Computational Physics written by Benjamin A. Stickler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the development of ever more powerful computers a new branch of physics and engineering evolved over the last few decades: Computer Simulation or Computational Physics. It serves two main purposes: - Solution of complex mathematical problems such as, differential equations, minimization/optimization, or high-dimensional sums/integrals. - Direct simulation of physical processes, as for instance, molecular dynamics or Monte-Carlo simulation of physical/chemical/technical processes. Consequently, the book is divided into two main parts: Deterministic methods and stochastic methods. Based on concrete problems, the first part discusses numerical differentiation and integration, and the treatment of ordinary differential equations. This is augmented by notes on the numerics of partial differential equations. The second part discusses the generation of random numbers, summarizes the basics of stochastics which is then followed by the introduction of various Monte-Carlo (MC) methods. Specific emphasis is on MARKOV chain MC algorithms. All this is again augmented by numerous applications from physics. The final two chapters on Data Analysis and Stochastic Optimization share the two main topics as a common denominator. The book offers a number of appendices to provide the reader with more detailed information on various topics discussed in the main part. Nevertheless, the reader should be familiar with the most important concepts of statistics and probability theory albeit two appendices have been dedicated to provide a rudimentary discussion.

Book Statistical Physics of Fluids
