Book Physico Chemical Characteristics of Lake Ecosystem

Download or read book Physico Chemical Characteristics of Lake Ecosystem written by Manickam Narasimman and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "Water quality" refers to the physical, chemical and biological parameters of water and all these characteristics directly or indirectly influence the survival and production of aquatic animals. Pollution of surface water has been growing incessantly in India particularly due to the indiscriminate discharge of waste water from various sources without using any water treatment techniques. Assurance of drinking water safety is a foundation for the prevention and control of water borne diseases. The present attempt was made in the physico-chemical characteristics of two perennial lakes such as Sulur and Ukkadam, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, were flood plain nature lakes. The perennial lakes are used for aquaculture and stored at ground water levels increasing processes. The lakes habitat, various physical properties and chemical factors are very important for growth of phytoplankton on which zooplankton and some higher consumer depend on their existence. Therefore, the present book (Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Lake Ecosystem) would be immensely useful to the Students, Researchers, Environmental Scientists, Environmental Managers and Fish Farmers.

Book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aldo Leopold, father of the "land ethic," once said, "The time has come for science to busy itself with the earth itself. The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.

Book Eutrophication Causes Consequences and Control

Download or read book Eutrophication Causes Consequences and Control written by Abid A. Ansari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eutrophication continues to be a major global challenge and the problem of eutrophication and availability of freshwater for human consumption is an essential ecological issue. The global demand for water resources due to increasing population, economic developments, and emerging energy development schemes has created new environmental challenges for global sustainability. Accordingly, the area of research on eutrophication has expanded considerably in recent years. Eutrophication, acidification and contamination by toxic substances are likely to pose increasing threats to freshwater resources and ecosystems. The consequences of anthropogenic-induced eutrophication of freshwaters are severe deterioration of surface waters and growing public concern, as well as new interest among the scientific community. “Eutrophication: causes, consequences & control” provides the latest information on many important aspects of the processes of natural and accelerated eutrophication in major aquatic ecosystems around the world. This book offers a cutting-edge resource for researchers and students alike who are studying eutrophication in various ecosystems. It presents the latest trends and developments in the field, including: global scenarios and local threats to the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems, economics of eutrophication, eutrophication in the great lakes of the Chinese pacific drainage basin, photoautotrophic productivity in eutrophic ecosystems, eutrophication’s impacts on natural metal remediation in salt marshes, phytoplankton assemblages as an indicator of water quality in seven temperate estuarine lakes in southeast Australia, biogeochemical indicators of nutrient enrichments in wetlands – the microbial response as a sensitive indicator of wetland eutrophication, and ultraviolet radiation and bromide as limiting factors in eutrophication processes in semi-arid climate zones. Written by respected experts and featuring helpful illustrations and photographs, “Eutrophication: causes, consequences & control” provides a concise and practical update on the latest developments in eutrophication.

Book Advances in Marine and Freshwater Monitoring to support Aquatic Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration

Download or read book Advances in Marine and Freshwater Monitoring to support Aquatic Ecosystem Conservation and Restoration written by Elisabetta Manea and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-13 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conserving and restoring freshwater and marine ecosystems are priorities addressed by several European and global conservation initiatives. Many management and conservation initiatives have been put in place to support the achievement of declared national and global conservation and sustainability goals. Nonetheless, the extent to which all these initiatives can provide lasting positive effects on conservation and restoration targets is often impaired/limited by the lack of robust baseline data and systematic monitoring, which in turn are constrained by the limited number of long-term monitoring programs and limited dedicated funding. This collection underlines the importance of monitoring in times of global change and shifting baselines and the urgency of boosting conservation strategies to ensure progression towards meeting global conservation objectives. Emphasis is given also to the socio-ecological contexts and dimensions of conservation efforts, and the potential of societal engagement in monitoring practices - a key enabling factor to turn conservation initiatives into practical actions and ecosystem protection.
