Book The Transition of China s Urban Development

Download or read book The Transition of China s Urban Development written by Jieming Zhu and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1949 to today, China has experienced dramatic changes in its economy and urban development. This book examines these changes and looks at one city, Shenzhen, in detail. The performance and behavior of a fledgling property market in the transitional economy are analyzed in the backdrop of real estate commodification and marketization. Students and researchers in urban geography, urban planning, economics, business, and real estate will find this monograph lucid and original. Two distinctive periods divide the last fifty years of development in China. The period 1949 to 1978 was dominated by central planning. After 1978, however, economic reforms brought a new property market to many of China's cities. The economic surge of this period has transformed these cities and helped create new metropolises. The special economic zone of Shenzhen grew from what was, until 1980, a landscape predominantly made up of rice paddy fields and traditional villages. By 1995, the population of the city grew to more than two and a half million. Two modes of land provision are identified as the main contributors to Shenzhen's urban development process, which is also echoed in other Chinese cities. Incremental urban land reforms are elaborated within a broad framework of institutional change, while marketization has brought many changes to Chinese society. Continued urban reform toward a market economy seems now irreversible.

Book Environmental Planning in the Caribbean

Download or read book Environmental Planning in the Caribbean written by Jonathan Pugh and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrated by case studies from both smaller nations, such as Carriacon, Barbados and St Lucia and larger countries, including Cuba, Mexico and Jamaica, this volume brings together leading writers concerned with environmental planning in the Caribbean to provide an interdisciplinary contemporary critical overview. They argue that context is central to the practice of environmental planning in this region. Rather than focusing on a deterministic colonial geography and history, this volume proposes that, whilst a wide range of foreign planning influences can be felt in different contexts, environmental planning emerges in specific settings, through the fluid interaction between local and global relations of power. Thus, a number of chapters explore the effects of external discourses upon the region, while others examine discourses on the US-style democracy and on tourism.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Urban and Regional Planning, grade: A, The University of Chicago, language: English, abstract: In his definition, Fogg (2008) observes that town planning regulations are rules that govern land use and design of the environment, inclusive of transport networks. The aim of town planning regulations is to guide and ensure orderly development and settlement of communities within urban centres. In Australia, Queensland in particular, town planning is found in various layers that run from the site of the development to the national level (Gurran, 2011). However, the developments are guided by laid down regulations that are discussed below.

Book Urban Planning and the British New Right

Download or read book Urban Planning and the British New Right written by Philip Allmendinger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did the 1980s and 1990s see the death of planning? Exposing the myth that has grown up around Thatcherism, leading experts from a wide range of land-use policy areas examine the changes that were brought about in planning and the environment during the 1980s and 1990s, and argue that much less was achieved than expected. Urban Planning and the British New Right questions common assumptions about planning practices under Thatcherism, concluding that the complex relationship of power between central, local and national government requires a sensitivity to change that is inclusive rather than doctrinal. This is a book that says as much about the administration, institutions and processes of planning as it does about Mrs Thatcher's attempts to change it.

Book The Cost of Land Use Decisions

Download or read book The Cost of Land Use Decisions written by Edwin Buitelaar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book tackles the ongoing debate between market and government in planning. By applying transaction cost economics to an evaluation of land use systems, the author provides a fresh angle and a useful contribution to a growing field of study for researchers in urban planning, public administration and land economics. The book explains the relevance of the cost of land use decisions to planning practice and analyses institutions and transaction costs. The author offers evidence from three systematic empirical studies with detailed analyses of the planning of Nijmegen - Holland being known for its plan-led development; Bristol - where the UK planning system is characterised by being development-led and discretionary; and Houston - generally regarded as the city with no planning at all.
