Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Oceanographic, Biological, and Chemical Data South Atlantic Coast of the United States: Theodore N. Gill Cruise 4 The vessel departed from Brunswick, Georgia, on October 1, 1953, on the southern leg of the cruise. Very rough seas pre vented occupation Of the series of special stations 5 through 8 and the standard sta tion. On October 5 special equipment was installed on the Gill in Nassau, and on October 7 and 8 special research in the Tongue of the Ocean south of New Providence Island was carried out by seien tists from the Columbia University Physics Department. Sonic soundings were made to and from Nassau and between stations. Hurricane warnings caused a reduction in the number of stations planned for the spe ciel work. Good weather prevailed after regular station work was begun and all but one of the 3k southern leg stations were occupied. The Gill returned to Brunswick on October 17, terminating the southern leg of the cruise. Departure from Brunswick to begin the northern leg of the cruise was made on October 21. This leg was characterized by high winds and heavy seas, and the vessel was forced into Charleston, S. C., and Morehead City, N. C., a total of 3 times. Loss of the ship's rudder off Cape Fear. Book Biological and Chemical Oceanography

Download or read book Biological and Chemical Oceanography written by Austin Brennan and published by Callisto Reference. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the ocean and its biological and physical aspects is known as oceanography. It is an earth science that includes a wide range of topics such as ocean current, ecosystem, and geophysical fluid dynamics. It also encompasses the study of plate tectonics as well as the geology of the sea floor. It examines different physical properties and chemical substances found in the ocean and across its boundaries. It blends the understanding of the processes within a number of disciplines like biology, chemistry, climatology, geology, geography, hydrology, physics and astronomy in order to acquire an in-depth knowledge of the oceans. Biological oceanography and chemical oceanography are two primary branches of oceanography. Biological oceanography includes the ecology of marine organisms. The study is done on the basis of the ecological characteristics of an individual organism and the physical, chemical and geological aspects of its ocean environment. The chemistry of the ocean is studied under chemical oceanography. It is concerned with the understanding of seawater properties. This book covers in detail some existent theories and innovative concepts revolving around biological and chemical oceanography. It includes contributions made by international experts. It is meant for students who are looking for an elaborate reference text on these disciplines.
