Book Infrared Spectroscopy

    Book Details:
  • Author : James M. Thompson
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-01-19
  • ISBN : 135120601X
  • Pages : 166 pages

Download or read book Infrared Spectroscopy written by James M. Thompson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is estimated that there are about 10 million organic chemicals known, and about 100,000 new organic compounds are produced each year. Some of these new chemicals are made in the laboratory and some are isolated from natural products. The structural determination of these compounds is the job of the chemist. There are several instrumental techniques used to determine the structures of organic compounds. These include NMR, UV/visible, infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. Of all the instrumental techniques listed, infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are the two most popular techniques, mainly because they tend to be less expensive and give us the most structural information. This book is an introductory text designed to acquaint undergraduate and graduate students with the basic theory and interpretative techniques of infrared spectroscopy. Much of the material in this text has been used over a period of several years for teaching courses in materials characterization and chemical analysis. It presents the infrared spectra of the major classes of organic compounds and correlates the infrared bands (bond vibrations) of each spectrum with the structural features of the compound it represents. This has been done for hydrocarbons, organic acids, ketones, aldehydes, esters, anhydrides, phenols, amines, and amides. The text discusses the origin of the fragments, techniques, innovations, and applications in infrared spectroscopy. It is interspersed with many illustrations, examples, an adequate but not overwhelming bibliography, and problems for students. It will serve as a lecture text for a one-semester course in infrared spectroscopy or can be used to teach the infrared spectroscopy portion of a broader course in material characterization and chemical analysis.

Book UV VIS Spectroscopy and Its Applications

Download or read book UV VIS Spectroscopy and Its Applications written by Heinz-Helmut Perkampus and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: UV-VIS spectroscopy is one of the oldest methods in molecular spectroscopy. The definitive formulation of the Bouguer-Lambert Beer law in 1852 created the basis for the quantitative evaluation of absorption measurements at an early date. This led firstly to colorimetry, then to photometry and finally to spectrophotometry. This evolution ran parallel with the development of detectors for measuring light intensities, i.e. from the human eye via the photo element and photocell, to the photomultiplier and from the photo graphic plate to the present silicon-diode detector both of which allow simultaneous measurement of the complete spectrum. With the development of quantum chemistry, increasing atten tion was paid to the correlation between light absorption and the structure of matter with the result that in recent decades a number of excellent discussions of the theory of electronic spectroscopy (UV-VIS and luminescence sp,~ctroscopy) have been published. Consequently, this extremely ivteresting aspect of molecular spec troscopy has dominated the teaching of the subject both in my own lectures and those of others. However, it is often overlooked that, in addition to the theory, applications of spectroscopic methods are of particular interest to scientists. For this reason, a lecture series about electronic spectroscopy given in the Institute for Physical Chemistry at the Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf was supplemented by one about "UV-VIS spectroscopy and its applications". This formed the basis of the present book.

Book Developments in Applied Spectroscopy Volume 1

Download or read book Developments in Applied Spectroscopy Volume 1 written by W. D. Ashby and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 15-18, 1961, the 12th Annual Symposium on Spectros copy was held in Chicago. Over the twelve-year history of this meeting, it has continually grown and now ranks as one of the major technical meetings in the field of spectroscopy. The scope of the program itself represents a balance between research applications and control applications, between applied and the more fundamental aspects of spectroscopy. Papers are presented each year in the specialty areas of X -ray, ultraviolet, visible, infrared, Raman, EPR, and NMR spectroscopy. In many instances over the years, excellent work has been re ported at this symposium and no further publication was made. These reports were then essentially lost for further reference. It is the purpose of this publication to provide a source of reference for the papers presented at the 12th Annual Symposium. This first attempt at publishing a proceedings does not include the entire program. Several papers could not be given company clear ance for publication, and several more were intended for verbal presentation only and were never written for publication. I, as Coordinator of the Symposium, would like to express my gratitude to the Symposium Committee, John Ferraro, Elwin Davis, Joseph Ziomek, John Kapetan, L. S. Gray, Jr., Russell J. Hansen, J. A. Sheinkop, L. V. Azaroff, and Carl Moore, whose diligence and labor resulted in a truly fine symposium, and subsequently made pos sible this publication.

Book Methods in Neurobiology

  • ISBN : 1468438069
  • Pages : 607 pages

Download or read book Methods in Neurobiology written by Robert Lahue and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid advances in knowledge have led to an increasing interest in neuro biology over the last several years. These advances have been made possible, at least in part, by the use of increasingly sophisticated methodology. Furthermore, research in the most rapidly advancing areas is essentially multidisciplinary and is characterized by contributions from many investi gators employing a variety of techniques. While a grasp of fundamental neurobiological concepts is an obvious prerequisite for those who wish to follow or participate in this field, critical awareness and evaluation of neurobiological research also requires an understanding of sophisticated methodologies. The objective of Methods in Neurobiology is the development of such critical abilities. The reader is exposed to the basic concepts, principles, and instrumentation of key methodologies, and the application of each meth odology is placed in the special context of neurobiological research. The reader will gain familiarity with the terminology and procedures of each method and the ability to evaluate results in light of the particular features of neurobiological preparations and applications.
