Book Physical Education in the High School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Physical Education in the High School Classic Reprint written by John F. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education in the High School The demands of our present-day civilization upon the physical strength of an individual make it more imperative now than ever before that due regard should be given to bodily development. The increased emphasis, therefore, upon Physical Education is warranted from every standpoint. Spencer says that the first obligation of the school is to make the pupil a good animal. The physical basis is fundamental as the foundation upon which to build manhood and womanhood. In some schools the tendency has been to place undue emphasis upon competitive exercises and upon the more strenuous forms of physical train ing called athletics. The purpose of Physical Education in a high school is not to train a few athletes, but to give systematic and properly-planned exercises to all boys and girls in order that their bodies may be developed and health promoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Physical Education: For Primary and Grammar Schools, Junior High Schools and High Schools From whatever point of view we study the value of motor education as a part of every child's education, we find it of such great importance both pedagogically and hygienically that we cannot consider it a minor phase of education any longer. In fact, a brief review of the factors which have always influenced human growth and development, physical as well as mental, must convince us of the need of paying more attention to the motor education of our children. Nobody will deny that the environment of a child is, next to its racial inheritance, the most powerful factor in its development towards mature physical, mental, moral, and social efficiency. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education in the Public Schools, 1919 The teachers of North Carolina and all school officials should take deeper interest in games and plays for the pupils of the school and of the neighborhood, whether they are in school or not. The bulletin, "Physical Education in the Public School," was prepared by the Bureau of Community Service, through the assistance of Miss Sarah Sanders and Mr. J. T. S. Black, who have charge of the section of Physical Education in this Department. Acknowledgment is also made to Miss Faye Davenport, Director of Physical Education, North Carolina State College for Women, for valuable suggestions. It should be the purpose of all school officials to place greater emphasis on Physical Education. To this end, the Bureau of Community Service is beginning, this year, a constructive and definite program of Junior Citizenship work, an important item of which will be an official test for physical fitness. The material in this bulletin is intended for use in work leading up to these tests. It is also intended for general distribution to answer the greatly increased demand and need for such material in the public schools of the State. The bulletin, therefore, has an essential part, not only in the Bureau of Community Service, but also in the State Department of Education, whose policy is to encourage in the schools of the State greater activity among the pupils in promoting Physical Education. Teachers will find in the bulletin suggestions for playground apparatus and where the same may be purchased. It suggests games for track and field athletics, how to organize them, and how to prepare the equipment for them. Suitable games for the elementary, grammar grade and high school are suggested; the teachers are urged to cooperate with their pupils in putting more life into the school by utilizing the play period in such a way as to make it enjoyable, recreational, and at the same time educational; but the chief emphasis should be placed on the recreational side. If this is done, the educational value will come as a natural result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minimum Essentials in an Adequate Physical Education Program for High Schools As indicated by the title, the defeiopment of this thesis must necessarily be comprehensive rather than in tensive. Since it is to cover the whole field of physi cal education for high schools. No one problem canflmezdealt with in minute detail-the purpose of the paper, isfratherx to bring together the broad general principles which should form the basis of a good physical education program for high schools. Enough of detail, however, will be used to make the various phases of the problem clear. Specific, and practical. Whenever it is impossible, because of the s00pe of the problem. To use that amount of detail which.would most completely develop an essential point. Definite refer shoes will be made to articles or books in which that point has been covered fully. Thus it is hoped to make a unified and condensed report of what might otherwise seem to be too general a problem for a thesis. Book A Guide to the History of Physical Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to the History of Physical Education Classic Reprint written by Fred Eugene Leonard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the History of Physical Education The shore of physical education is strewn with the wrecks of systems and movements, many of them good in themselves, but left to drift when the personal support and enthusiasm of the founder was removed from the helm. It has only been when some great national crisis had to be faced and the minds of patriots and scholars were engaged in the effort to meet it, that systems have been evolved great enough to survive the death of their founder, the test of time and change in their national conditions. This is notably true of the gymnastics of Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Incomplete as systems Of physical education without the addition of games, but logical and accurate in their application to the con ditions they have had to meet, whenever similar conditions have arisen it is to them we have turned for inspiration and instruction, and nowhere was this better shown than in the great war of 1914, where crude masses of untrained and underdeveloped men had to be made quick and accurate in response to command and given that control of their bodies that is the true function of physical education in its highest sense. TO the sincere student of physical education nothing has a more sobering effect than the study of those advances made by the great men who have given their lives to their cause. He finds that most of the theories that come to him as new and startling have been thought before and have been either rejected or put into practice as well or better than he is likely to do, and so if he is a philosopher, he can avoid the inevitable failure of schemes that have been dis carded and adapt from material of proved worth the material that suits his special conditions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education and the Preservation of Health Considerations of this description have presented themselves occasionally, as I have been called to observe the evils arising from the prevalent systems of education, and also from too steady an application to liter ary pursuits in those whose education was completed. At one period, my attention was directed to the unfavorable influence of studious and sedentary habits on health, by the occurrence of alarming indisposition among the members of the sacred profes sion, a number of whom became its prema ture and much lamented Victims. At ah other, I witnessed the effects of a mistaken system, on the constitution of multitudes of the fairest work of creative power. I have had the misfortune to behold, when it was too late to apply a remedy, numer ous instances of decay in the most vigorous constitutions, and of distortion in the best proportioned forms. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Education in the Primary School At a time when Laban's principles of Space, Weight, Time and Flow and other ideas are making themselves felt, it might appear that we in Rhodesia are being a little conservative in publishing a syllabus which admittedly contains conventional material. This material, however, is applied in an unusual manner which we believe will suit the special needs of the schools in Rhodesia. With a large territory to cover it is impossible for the Physical Education Advisers to see teachers often enough to keep them all abreast of new trends. These teachers require detailed guidance. Moreover, we are aware that the majority of them prefer a syllabus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
