Book Ceramic Microstructures

Download or read book Ceramic Microstructures written by Antoni P. Tomsia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, titled Proceedings of the International Materials Symposium on Ce ramic Microstructures: Control at the Atomic Level summarizes the progress that has been achieved during the past decade in understanding and controlling microstructures in ceram ics. A particular emphasis of the symposium, and therefore of this volume, is advances in the characterization, understanding, and control of micro structures at the atomic or near-atomic level. This symposium is the fourth in a series of meetings, held every ten years, devoted to ceramic microstructures. The inaugural meeting took place in 1966, and focussed on the analysis, significance, and production of microstructure; the symposium emphasized the need for, and importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of the physical and chemical characteristics of ceramics. A consensus emerged at that meeting on the critical importance of characterization in achieving a more complete understanding of ceramic properties. That point of view became widely accepted in the ensuing decade. The second meeting took place in 1976 at a time of world-wide energy shortages and thus emphasized energy-related applications of ceramics, and more specifically, microstructure-property relationships of those materials. The third meeting, held in 1986, was devoted to the role that interfaces played both during processing, and in influencing the ultimate properties of single and polyphase ceramics, and ceramic-metal systems.

Book Ultrafine Grain Ceramics

Download or read book Ultrafine Grain Ceramics written by John Burke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Saga more Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgi cal Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a sub ject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. Grain size and its control is a major factor governing the behavior of materi als. Knowledge that one can obtain grain sizes in the 10 micron down to sub micron range has established the basis for a new technology. This volume, Ultrafine-Grain Ceramics, addresses itself to the broad areas of: realization of fine-grain ceramics; preparation of ultrafine particle size materials; characterization of ultrafine particles and ultrafine-grain ceramics; processing and behavior of ultra fine-grain ceramics. The technical advice provided by Dr. S. K. Dutta of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center during the editing of this book is acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Scala, Director, Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mason, Commanding Officer, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Re search Center is appreciated.

Book Fundamentals of Ceramics

Download or read book Fundamentals of Ceramics written by Michel Barsoum and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-27 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated and improved, this revised edition of Michel Barsoum's classic text Fundamentals of Ceramics presents readers with an exceptionally clear and comprehensive introduction to ceramic science. Barsoum offers introductory coverage of ceramics, their structures, and properties, with a distinct emphasis on solid state physics and chemistry. Key equations are derived from first principles to ensure a thorough understanding of the concepts involved. The book divides naturally into two parts. Chapters 1 to 9 consider bonding in ceramics and their resultant physical structures, and the electrical, thermal, and other properties that are dependent on bonding type. The second part (Chapters 11 to 16) deals with those factors that are determined by microstructure, such as fracture and fatigue, and thermal, dielectric, magnetic, and optical properties. Linking the two sections is Chapter 10, which describes sintering, grain growth, and the development of microstructure. Fundamentals of Ceramics is ideally suited to senior undergraduate and graduate students of materials science and engineering and related subjects.

Book Nanocrystalline Ceramics

Download or read book Nanocrystalline Ceramics written by Markus Winterer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanocrystalline materials are three-dimensional ultrafine, polycrystalline microstructures. They give rise to interesting and useful chemical and physical-size effects. This book describes the development of a method of synthesizing chemical vapor for the production of nanocrystalline ceramic powders. The development of the microstructure during sintering is studied and the influence of the synthesis parameters on the structure and properties of the nanocrystalline ceramics from the atomic to the microstructural level is investigated. The emerging unified view, from powder synthesis and ceramic processing to structural characterization and determination of properties, provides a detailed understanding of the materials and enables better quality control of the end products.

Book The Investigation of Microstructure in Structural Ceramics

Download or read book The Investigation of Microstructure in Structural Ceramics written by Harris Merl Burte and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of understanding and controlling the effects of microstructure on the properties of ceramics for space and nuclear applications has become well established in recent years, and several introductory reviews are available. It is now appropriate to focus attention on defining pacing problems and the most fertile areas for future effort. This is attempted for the mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties underlying the structural use of ceramics. A dimensional range from subgrain features of polycrystalline bodies to the micromechanics of composites is considered. The status of experimental methods for characterizing microstructure is discussed, as is the importance of improved experimental substances. One pacing factor is the ability to synthesize or prepare desired microstructures with controlled variations, in order to further research into microstructural effects as well as to provide a basis for subsequent technology.
