Book excerpt: Our long-term goal is to develop a fundamental understanding of the physical and biological mechanisms that aggregate zooplankton on spatial scales of hundreds of meters to hundreds of kilometers. These aggregation processes have a profound effect on the distribution, movements, and behavior of top predators, including those that feed directly on zooplankton (e.g., basking sharks, manta rays, right whales). While all marine mammals rely on prey aggregation processes for their survival, baleen whales are perhaps most dependent upon these processes because of the enormous quantities of food they must consume daily. Therefore, we have chosen to focus our long-term research efforts on the interactions between baleen whales, zooplankton, and ocean physics to better understand the environmental factors that influence marine mammal distribution. The specific objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to elucidate the mechanisms of copepod aggregation in the Great South Channel, a major springtime feeding area for right, sei, humpback, and fin whales in the southwestern Gulf of Maine; and (2) to examine the relationship between these mechanisms and the distribution and abundance of baleen whales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores the role that the circulation in the Gulf of Maine (GOM) plays in determining the distribution of dense aggregations of copepods. These aggregations are an important part of the marine ecosystem, especially for endangered North Atlantic right whales. Certain ocean processes may generate dense copepod aggregations, while others may destroy them; this thesis looks at how different characteristics of the GOM circulation fit into these two categories. The first part of the thesis investigates a hypothetical aggregation mechanism in which frontal circulation interacts with copepod behavior to generate a dense patch of copepods. The first two chapters of this thesis address this mechanism in the context of coastal river plumes and salinity fronts. One chapter describes the characteristics and variability of coastal freshwater and salinity fronts using a historical dataset and a realistic numerical model. The seasonal variability of freshwater is tied in part to seasonality in river discharge, while variability on shorter time scales in the frontal position is related to wind stress. Another chapter applies the hypothetical mechanism to idealized river plumes using a suite of numerical models. The structure of the plume and plume-relative circulation change the resulting copepod aggregation from what is expected from the hypothetical mechanism. The second part of the thesis discusses the GOM circulation and how it may eliminate copepod patches. The summertime mean surface circulation and eddy kinetic energy are computed from a Lagrangian drifter dataset and an adaptive technique that allows for higher spatial resolution while also keeping uncertainty low. Eddy diffusivity is also computed over different regions of the GOM in an attempt to quantify the spreading of a patch of copepods, and is found to be lower near the coast where right whales are often found feeding on copepod patches. In the next chapter, a numerical drifter dataset is used to understand how the results of the previous chapter depend upon the quantity of observations. It is found that the uncertainty in estimating eddy diffusivity is tightly coupled to the number of drifters in the calculation.

They are also used as model animals for ecotoxicological and molecular studies, and might be adopted as control agents of disease vectors.Current studies are rapidly exploring multiple lines of research with an intended purpose to provide an up-to-date snapshot of some hot topics in the study of the distribution, biology and ecology of these ubiquitous crustaceans. The chapters collected in this volume, written by leading scientists in different fields of investigation, focus on a wide range of processes and scales, from global distribution to molecular investigations, witnessing the interest of the scientific community at different levels. Book excerpt: In the current study, behavioral responses of several species of calanoid copepods to mimics of oceanographic structure were observed and evaluated in the context of foraging and aggregation. Zooplankton distributions in oceanic habitats are often attributed to physical forcing; however, physical factors only act to drive ecological patterns at large scales (m to km). At fine to intermediate scales (cm to m) zooplankton behavior is believed to govern observed distributions, but the mechanisms and ecological significance of these behaviors are not well understood. In a water column, biological activity is often concentrated into one or a few regions, called thin layers, on the order of a meter thick, and zooplankton, such as copepods, must be able to reliably locate and exploit these patches for survival. Thin layers commonly are associated with oceanic structure such as flow gradients, fluid density jumps, or chemical composition gradients. Utilization of mechanosensory or chemosensory cues associated with thin layers may increase foraging success, thus translating into a significant ecological advantage. A laboratory apparatus was developed to create isolated and combined thin layer properties. Copepods then were exposed to laboratory mimics of thin layers. All of the tested species of copepods exhibited behavioral responses associated with area-restricted search behavior to one of the physical gradients (flow velocity or fluid density), but not both. Similar responses were observed for chemical exudate layer experiments and included increased proportional residence times, swimming speeds, and turn frequency. Food layers induced feeding responses from all tested species (increased proportional residence time, decreased swimming speed). Responses to various combinations of gradients were not fully synergistic, but suggested that some copepods employ a cue hierarchy to locate food-rich areas. Velocity or density gradients acted as initial cues for narrowing search regions, while chemical exudates induced responses that strengthened or removed the initial reactions. A simple foraging model was used to illustrate how such behavioral changes can lead to observed aggregations at larger temporal and spatial scales. Consequently, these results suggest that individual responses to oceanographic structure may have far reaching influence on population dynamics, succession, and biodiversity in coastal and pelagic ecosystems.
