This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book The Effects of Participation in a Physical Activity Mentoring Program on the Attitudes of College Students Toward Individuals with Disabilities

Download or read book The Effects of Participation in a Physical Activity Mentoring Program on the Attitudes of College Students Toward Individuals with Disabilities written by Tanya Shull and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Health-related mentoring programs for individuals with disabilities can produce benefits for all participants. Physical activity is critical for individuals with disabilities and has been shown to enhance many aspects of their health. Through a physical activity mentoring program, persons can benefit from a mentor to become physically active. Objective: To determine the effects of a physical activity mentoring program for individuals with disabilities on the attitudes of college students towards persons with disabilities. Methods: College student mentors (n = 36) were paired with individuals with disabilities to participate in physical activity 2 hours a week for 8 weeks. Mentors completed pre and post attitude surveys. A control group (n = 32) was used for comparison. Two scales were utilized to measure attitudes of college students. Antonak' s Scale Toward Disabled Persons and Gething's Modified Interaction with Disabled Persons Scale were used. Results: Participation in a physical activity mentoring program for individuals with disabilities did not show a significant difference in attitude change in the experimental group (mentors) compared to a control group. Conclusions: Data suggests future studies with larger samples may find a change in sub-groups. To determine the affects of participation in a physical activity mentoring program more research needs to be done.

Book excerpt: When it comes to researching the physical activity levels of college students, there seem to be very few studies that truly depict and show the ranges of physical activity throughout a college student's life. This statement has helped propelled me to collect and analyze data in order to see what the physical activity is like for an undergraduate college student at the University of Texas. Researchers have discovered that many college students have reported understanding the benefits of physical activity, but that they report that there are many barriers in their daily life that thrust physical activity into the backseat as a priority (Lopez, Gallegos, & Extremera, 2010). Knowing that some college students will ignore physical activity, regardless of the health-related benefits, urges us to further discover the attitude of college students towards physical activity and what factors seem to have the most affect, whether positively or negatively, when it comes to their decisions on physical activity. Many university students decrease their PA levels (Gyurcsik, Bray, & Brittain, 2004; Keating et al., 2005; McArthur & Raedeke, 2009). Knowing this, I seek to answer the question, "What happens to the levels of physical activity throughout an undergraduate student's life and what are the contributing factors to their level of physical activity?" Researchers noted that a healthy college-aged student should be participating in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least 5 days per week (Nelson, 2007). My thesis is an analysis of daily and weekly activity, as well as what kinds of physical activity college students like and do not, the way in which they participate, either independently or with friends, as well as where they partake in physical activity. My subjects answered questions based on their physical activity levels throughout their college years. The subjects ranged between first and fifth year undergraduate students, which allowed me to get some insight as to how their physical activity levels have changed throughout the duration of their college careers.

Book Physical Activity Among College Students

Download or read book Physical Activity Among College Students written by Angelica M. Hardee and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine physical activity behaviors among college students. Analyses were also conducted to examine whether or not physical activity differed based on sex, grade level, and participants' personal attitudes. A convenience sample of 177 participants was surveyed during the spring semester of 2013. The sample included participants from a variety of general education courses. Descriptive statistics, one-way analyses of variance, and multivariate analyses of variance were used to analyze the data. Results indicated that overall participants physical activity did not differ based on grade level. Results revealed that physical activity significantly differed based on sex. Significant differences in physical activity attitudes were found based on recent physical activity. Personal attitudes were not significantly associated with grade level or recent physical activity. Study findings suggest that physical activity programs for college students may be warranted. Recommendations are included for future studies.
