Book excerpt: "The current study investigated the relationship between kindergarten physical activity, kindergarten nutrition, and fourth grade academic achievement. The study utilized a publicly available national data set, the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten 2010-2011 (ECSL-K2011). The use of this dataset allowed for the examination of the longitudinal effects of physical activity and nutrition as well as the generalization of the results. Scales were created for the kindergarten physical activity and nutrition variables since they do not exist in the original dataset. The dependent variable was the academic achievement of the students during fourth grade. Control variables were gender, SES, race, and kindergarten achievement. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the relationships among the variables. Physical activity during the kindergarten year was found to have a significant direct effect on fourth grade achievement but with higher activity levels predicting lower achievement. Although there is a current focus on encouraging children to be active, these findings suggest that activity level may at times take away from an academic focus. Kindergarten nutrition was not related to fourth grade achievement. Kindergarten achievement was highly related to fourth grade achievement and had a positive relationship with physical activity and nutrition. Additionally, girls had lower fourth grade achievement than boys, but this may have been because there was a greater focus on mathematics and science in measuring achievement in the study. Further longitudinal research in this field would be needed to better understand the impacts that physical activity and nutrition have on children’s academics and well-being as a whole."--Abstract

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: It has been documented that children from all socioeconomic backgrounds are at risk for poor nutrition and lack of physical activity (PA). On one hand, many children from low-income families are not getting enough to eat each day due to a lack of resources. On the other hand, children from middle and upper income levels consume enough food, but their diets are high in fat, sugar, and sodium, and they do not participate in PA. As a result of this combination, many children today face an increased risk for under-nutrition, obesity, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Finally, educators and health professionals agree that poor diet, eating habits and lack of PA, also affect academic performance. The fact that a hungry child cannot learn has been documented in numerous studies. Indeed, this research has found that even moderate under-nutrition and an immense lack of PA can have lasting effects on children's ability to learn and school performance. Undernourished and untrained children tend to attain lower scores on standardised tests, are more likely to become sick, miss school, and to fall behind in class. Also, hungry children have low energy, are more irritable, and have difficulty concentrating, which interferes with learning. Therefore, school feeding and PA programs were established by several schools and public and private organizations to provide proper nourishment and the possibility of practicing PA. In addition it helps preventing the negative effects of hunger and malnutrition. The School Breakfast Programs was established as a pilot project in 1966 in response to the needs of children arriving at school without having eaten breakfast. Now permanent, breakfast programs help states provide daily breakfast to millions of students in thousands of schools. The positive impact of this program cannot be underestimated. Not only do many teachers report that students are more alert and perform better in class after eating a nutritious breakfast, but published studies also found that breakfast programs are associated with significant improvements in academic functioning among school children. PA programs can substantially improve children s ability to learn and their state of health by making PA a part of their daily lives. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Approximately 33% of children in the U.S. are overweight/obese, thus increasing their risk for adverse health effects. Physical inactivity has been identified as a contributing factor to this problem yet the majority of children are not meeting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Physical Activity Guidelines and most schools are not offering daily physical education. The overall purpose of this prospective, descriptive study was to examine the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement in rural, low income, Mexican origin, elementary school aged children. In addition, physical activity rates and correlates were also examined. The study utilized a cross sectional design and data from two sources: baseline data from the Niños Sanos, Familia Sana study and school testing data from the Firebaugh Las Deltas Unified School District. Niños Sanos, Familia Sana study is a 5-year, multifaceted childhood obesity study in the towns of Firebaugh and San Joaquin, California, with an overall goal of slowing the increase of body mass index in children ages 3-8. Baseline data were collected between March 1, 2012 and January 15, 2013. Children were included in the subsample (N=66) if they 1) attended Hazel M. Bailey Elementary School during the 2012-2013 school year and 2) had 3 or more days of accelerometer wear. The majority of the children were born in the United States (92%) while the majority of their mothers were born in Mexico (80%). 38% of the children were overweight/obese. English Language Arts and mathematics test scores were found to be unrelated to physical activity. 72% of the children averaged 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day. Boys were significantly more active than girls. The significance of this study is its new knowledge concerning general physical activity and academic achievement, and health behaviors in an understudied, at risk community. The Latino population comprises 38% of California's population and is disproportionately affected by overweight and obesity. Rural location and residence make it difficult to reach these two communities. Findings can be used to support public policies thus promoting lifelong healthy weight through obesity prevention among Latino children.
