Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The excitation spectrum of the proton is comprised of many broad overlapping resonances, making investigations of these resonances very challenging. Two excellent tools in helping deconvolve the spectrum are eta and eta-prime meson photoproduction from the proton. Since the beginning of this new millennium, much progress has been made in measuring eta and eta-prime meson photoproduction from the proton. These new measurements are largely in the form of differential cross sections that now cover the first and second resonance regions. In addition to differential cross section data, there have been a comparatively smaller number of beam asymmetry measurements for eta photoproduction. However, these beam asymmetries cover the energy range up to only about E_gamma = 1.5 GeV. In this talk, I will present preliminary Jefferson Lab CLAS data on beam asymmetry for both the eta and eta-prime. I will also discuss how the new measurements will be useful in understanding the structure and exci.

Book excerpt: Photoproduction of[eta] and[eta][prime] mesons has been studied at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using a tagged photon beam incident on a hydrogen target with photon energies from the respective production thresholds up to 2.4 GeV. The photoproduced mesons were identified via missing mass reconstruction using recoil proton momentum and time of flight information. Data were obtained in a range of[radical]s from threshold to 2.2 GeV for each meson. In this study, differential cross-section measurements for the[gamma]p[yields] p[eta] and[gamma]p[yields] p[eta][prime] reactions are presented, and the results compared to recent data. An isobar analysis of the differential cross-sections is performed. The predicted differential cross-sections from the isobar analysis are used to predict behavior in unmeasured regions of phase space, and to infer total cross sections. For the[gamma]p[yields] p[eta] reaction, a value of the S[sub 11](1535) proton helicity amplitude also was extracted and compared to recent analyses. The data presented greatly extends the energy and angle coverage for differential cross-sections of[eta] photoproduction, and significantly improves the accuracy with which[eta][prime] cross sections are known.

Book excerpt: Differential cross sections for the reaction gamma p --> eta-prime p have been measured with the CLAS spectrometer and a tagged photon beam with energies from 1.527 to 2.227 GeV. The results reported here possess much greater accuracy than previous measurements. Analyses of these data indicate for the first time the coupling of the eta prime N channel to both the S11(1535) and P11(1710) resonances, known to couple strongly to the eta N channel in photoproduction on the proton, and the importance of j=3/2 resonances in the process.

The precise mechanism that gives the η′ its large mass is not yet fully understood, and also the current knowledge of the η′ specific properties is far from complete. This volume addresses both theoretical and experimental open issues of relevance in our understanding of this peculiar meson.

The hadronic amplitude that enters into our analysis is strongly constrained because it is fixed from a global fit to available gamma p to p eta data for differential cross sections and polarizations. We compare our results with present information on the two-photon eta-decay from the literature. We provide predictions for future PrimEx experiments at Jefferson Laboratory in order to motivate further studies.

Book excerpt: The focus of this analysis is photoproduced n and n' mesons. The data were obtained in Hall B at Jefferson Lab using a photon beam at an endpoint energy of 4.016 GeV in the spring and summer of 2004. The Hall B photon tagging system and the CLAS spectrometer were used to collect the data. From this data, and in the course of analysis of the Nn and Nn' systems, measurements were made of the differential cross sections for n and n' photoproduction. The differential cross section measurements for the n improve the statistics and slightly improve the kinematic range for world data. The results for the n' represents an almost entirely new dataset which will allow for further analysis of the n' meson. The results of this measurement for the n' extend the statistics and kinematic range of world data dramatically.

Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been much interest in the possible existence of the N*(1685) narrow nucleon resonance, as predicted by the chiral soliton model. Several eta photoproduction experiments have been performed that rely on extracting neutron observables from deuteron target data. These have shown some evidence of narrow structure, however, no structure was observed in cross section measurements on the proton channel. Within the A2 collaboration at the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, Germany, a more detailed study has been undertaken using eta photoproduction on a liquid hydrogen target, and is the subject for this thesis. The study utilised the high resolution and high precision possible with the A2 detector setup, in an attempt to overcome the predicted low photocoupling between the N*(1685) and the proton. The MAMI electron beam was used to produce bremsstrahlung photons, the energies of which are determined by detecting the recoil electrons in the Glasgow-Mainz Tagged Photon Spectrometer. The reaction products from the interaction of the photon beam and liquid hydrogen were detected by the Crystal Ball and TAPS calorimeters. The gamma proton to eta proton reaction channel was identified via the 3 neutral pion decay branch. The reaction cross section was measured between E = 707 and 1477 MeV. Both differential and total cross sections have been presented with a particular emphasis on the centre of mass energy range around 1685 MeV. The peak structure seen on the neutron channel is not observed in the case of the proton. However, a dip in the cross section is observed, which is more prominent at forward polar angles. The leading models are not fully able to reproduce the data in this energy region. As such, given the high energy resolution of the measurement the results can be used to constrain future models and in doing so aid the understanding of the nucleon's resonance spectrum.
