Book Thermodynamic and Kinetic Behavior of the Polystyrene Poly vinyl Methyl Ether Blend as Studied by Excimer Fluorescence

Download or read book Thermodynamic and Kinetic Behavior of the Polystyrene Poly vinyl Methyl Ether Blend as Studied by Excimer Fluorescence written by Curtis W. Frank and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excimer fluorescence is used to study the morphology and kinetics of phase separation in the polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) blends as well as in related blends containing either polystyrene or poly(vinyl methyl either). Photophysical models are developed to describe one-dimensional and three-dimensional energy migration processes in miscible and immiscible blends. Experimental measurements of the kinetics of phase separation were found to agree with theories of spinodal decomposition due to de Gennes and Pincus. Fluorescence is shown to be sensitive to the influence of solvent casting conditions on the morphology of the resulting polymer blends. Phase separation in methyl cyclohexane solutions of polystyrene is also examined and described satisfactorily using the same photophysical model developed for the solid polymer blends. Synthesis of probe polymers containing fluorescent groups at the chanin ends is described as a means of determining the end-to-end distances from fluorescence depolarization measurements.

Book Morphology of the Polystyrene Poly Vinyl Methyl Ether Blend as Studied by Excimer Fluorescence

Download or read book Morphology of the Polystyrene Poly Vinyl Methyl Ether Blend as Studied by Excimer Fluorescence written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excimer fluorescence is used to study conformational statistics and aggregation in miscible and immiscible blends of polystyrene with poly(vinyl methyl ether). At low polystyrene concentration in miscible blends, excimer fluorescence of isolated polystyrene chains is analyzed in terms of a one- dimensional random walk of the migrating singlet exciton. At high concentration in miscible blends the energy migration is three-dimensional. Knowledge of the fluorescence behavior for miscible blends is used to determine the phase composition for phase separated blends. (Author).

Book Photophysical and Photochemical Tools in Polymer Science

Download or read book Photophysical and Photochemical Tools in Polymer Science written by Mitchell A. Winnik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1980 the New York Academy of Sciences sponsored a three-day conference on luminescence in biological and synthetic macromolecules. After that meeting, Professor Frans DeSchryver and I began to discuss the possibility of organizing a different kind of meeting, with time for both informal and in-depth discussions, to examine certain aspects of the application of fluorescence and phosphorescence spectroscopy to polymers. Our ideas developed through discussions with many others, particularly Professor Lucien Monnerie. By 1983, when we submitted our proposal to NATO for an Advanced Study Institute, the area had grown enormous ly. It is interesting in retrospect to look back on the points which emerged from these discussions as the basis around which the scientific program would be organized and the speakers chosen. We decided early on to focus on applications of these methods to provide information about polymer molecules and polymer systems: The topics would all relate to the conformation and dynamics of macromolecules, or to the morphology of polymer-containing systems. Another important decision was to expand the scope of the ASI to include certain photochemical techniques, parti cular ly laser flash pho to lys is. These appl icat ions were at the time quite new, but full of promise as important sources of information about polymers.

Book Effects of Low Molar Mass Liquid Crystal Addition on the Miscibility of Syndiotactic Polystyrene Blends

Download or read book Effects of Low Molar Mass Liquid Crystal Addition on the Miscibility of Syndiotactic Polystyrene Blends written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research is concerned with studying the miscibility of syndiotactic polystyrene (SPS) blend with several polymers such as poly(alpha-methyl styrene) (PaMS), poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA), poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA), poly(cyclohexyl acrylate) (PCHA), poly(cis-isoprene) (PIP) and poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). SPS synthesized by using metallocene catalyst and modified-methylaluminoxane (MMAO) as cocatalyst. From the experimental results, it was found that the SPS can be miscible with PaMS, PEMA, PBMA, PCHA and PIP but it can not be miscible with PVME. Furthermore, the study concerned with the effect of addition cyclohexylbiphenylcyclohexane (CBC-33) and glycerol monostearate (GMS) on thermal properties and the crystallinity of blended polymer. The results showed that CBC-33 and GMS can also slightly decrease melting temperature (T[subscript m]) of the blends because they reduce melt viscosity of the blends, therefore the crystal of the blends will melt easier and form to crystalline slowly which correspond with depression of T[subscript c].

Book Relationship Among Polymer Polymer Interaction Energy Densities and the Deuterium Isotope Effect

Download or read book Relationship Among Polymer Polymer Interaction Energy Densities and the Deuterium Isotope Effect written by J. L. Lin and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cloud points for the mixtures of polystyrene and poly-alpha-methylstyrene and of polybutadiene and poly-alpha-methylstyrene were measured, and the data were analyzed to determine the interaction energy densities for these two pairs of polymers. In conjunction with the value for the pair polystyrene-polybutadiene previously determined, it is shown that the relationship is obeyed fairly well. To study the deuterium isotope effect on polymer miscibility, a matching pair of deuterated and hydrogeneous polystyrenes of closely similar structure were prepared by reacting a pre-formed polystyrene with either deuterated benzene or ordinary benzene. It was found that cloud points for the mixtures of polystyrene and poly-alpha-methylstene were not affected by the deuteration of polystyrene but the mixtures of polystyrene and poly(vinyl methyl ether) showed an appreciable deuterium isotope effect. Keywords: Polymer-Polymer Interaction Energy Density, Polystyrene, Polymer Blends, Deuterium Isotope Effect, Polystyrene, Polybutadiene, Poly-alpha-methylstyrene, Poly (vinyl methyl ether).
