Book excerpt: Development of gamma-ray beam interrogation technologies for remote detection of special nuclear materials and isotope analysis requires comprehensive databases of nuclear structure information and gamma-ray induced nuclear reaction observables. Relevant nuclear structure details include the energy, spin and parity of excited states that have significant probability for electromagnetic transition from the ground state, i.e, the angular momentum transferred in the reaction is [Delta]l ≤ 2. This talk will report recent Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) measurements to identify and characterize new low-spin states in actinide nuclei at energies from 1 to 4 MeV, which is the energy range most important for remote analysis methods. Here, these measurements are carried out using the nearly mono-energetic linearly polarized gamma-ray beam at the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI[gamma]S) at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. Also, studies of the ([gamma], n) reaction on a variety of nuclei with linearly polarized beams at HI[gamma]S indicate that this reaction might be used to discern between fissile and non-fissile materials. This work will be described. In addition, an overview will be given of a concept for a next generation laser Compton-backing scattering gamma-ray source to be implemented as an upgrade to increase the beam intensity at HI[gamma]S by more than an order of magnitude.

Book excerpt: This book presents the first simultaneous detection of neutrons and positrons after a terrestrial gamma-ray flash (TGF), a highest-energy transient phenomenon on the earth, triggered by a lightning discharge, based on innovative ground-based observations made in the Hokuriku area of Japan. TGFs, known to be produced by lightning discharges since the 1990s, has been theoretically predicted to react with atmospheric nuclei via photonuclear reactions because they comprise high-energy photons of more than 10 MeV, but such photonuclear reactions by lightning discharges, which produce neutrons and unstable isotopes emitting positrons, were not observationally confirmed. The reactions and propagations of their products in the atmosphere are modeled with Monte Carlo simulations to quantitatively evaluate observations of TGFs, neutrons, and positrons at ground level. The successful comparison between observation and simulation is presented, and demonstrates that lightning discharges to trigger photonuclear reactions and to even produce isotopes in the atmosphere.

Book excerpt: High-energy bremsstrahlung, variable up to about 60 MeV, from high-intensity electron linacs can produce activation through a variety of photonuclear reactions. A great range of activities by half-lives can be used. Some discrimination between target elements can be obtained through the choice of bremsstrahlung endpoint energy. The high discrimination of Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometers permits much of the analysis to be accomplished without chemical separation of resulting nuclei; hence nondestructive analysis can be applied to many materials. To facilitate the use of such analysis, a compilation of photonuclear reactions with their resulting gamma-rays has been prepared, consisting of two tables. Table 1 lists the photonuclear reactions by target nuclei, giving the residual nuclei for half-lives from 100 micro sec to 24 hours. Table 2, derived from Table 1, is a list of gamma-ray energies by reactions designed to identify unknown target nuclei. (Author).
