By following the language written by the Indian author Dr Pragya Suman, I always felt that she was whispering in her rhetoric and words. And this whisper takes many forms and images. It is nice to follow those pictures and forms to see this enrichment in this beautiful color and unique language. The whispered language is manifested in images that do not tend to sharpness, and many aspects of it are deferred, and the revelation reaches the recipient through reverberations and jolts far from indoctrination, with whisper words and subtle meanings. This was the medium that really brought photography to the masses; these cards were affordable, they were topical, and they could be sent for a penny anywhere in the country. The variety of imagery, much of it developed anonymously in small studios, much of it taken by inspired amateurs (these were the days when anyone could, and many folks did, own a camera) displays America in all its variety and vitality. Most postcards were mass produced and printed in ink by the collotype or halftone process. But a few were original photographic prints, exposed directly from glass plates or film negatives. Known as real photos these were real photographs, aristocrats of the genre and spectacular examples of vernacular photography. In this charming and scholarly book, Vaule selects the best of them, from all over the country, addressing their social and historical contexts, explaining the mysteries of their manufacture and dissemination, and describing the characteristics and identities of their makers, many of whose names and studios are listed in the book. But without doubt, it is the images themselves that still hold us: storefronts and townships, frisky children and sober adults, air ships and barn raisings. You may never have been to Basel, Switzerland for the art fairs, but you might certainly feel as though you have, experiencing it exclusively through the spate of other people's images. Vik Muniz's series Postcards from Nowhere grapples with how, through photographs, we have come to "see" and understand distant yet iconic sites we may never actually view with our own eyes. "The images we hold in our heads are an assemblage," notes Muniz. "They are an amalgam of every image of those locations that we have ever seen." More critically, the series serves as an homage not just to the quasi-obsolete artifact of the picture postcard, but to a way of life that has now been put in sharp relief. Muniz's images--created out of collaged pieces of vintage postcards from the artist's personal collection--materialize the experience and longing of travel, triangulating between the traveler, a distant location, and the recipient who, increasingly, remains at home. Volume I presents thirty-two single postcards displaying each of the images in the series. Volume II presents a series of thirty-six postcards that, when assembled, can be viewed as a single, large-scale work of 30 x 40 inches. The process of assembling the larger, single image is akin to the original act of collage--or like that of assembling a mosaic crafted from disparate pieces that have traveled from afar, but when brought together, conjure something that is larger, more complete than any individual element could be on its own.
