Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute on "Photoionization and Other Probes of Many-Electron Interactions" was held at the Centre "Les Cigales" in Carry-Ie-Rouet (France), from August 31st till September 13th 1975. The Institute was sponsored by the Scienti fic Affairs Division of NATO. The "Centre National de la Recher che Scientifique" (France) gave also partial support to the French participants and the National Science Foundation (U. S . A. ) to the American participants. A total of 18 lecturers, and 54 students selected among more than 120 applicants, attended the Institute. Over the last few years, substantial progress has been made in the experimental study of photon- or electron interactions with atoms. In particular, the g. rowing number of facilities created to use the synchrotron radiation makes now possible the realization of new types of experiments. The accumulation of new results showed clearly it was necessary to introduce electron correlations in the theoretical models in order to explain the existence and the probability of a large number of processes, in particular multiple processes. Thus large progress has also been made in the theore tical description of the excitation of the electronic systems and their interactions. It was the purpose of this Institute to bring together theoreticians and experimentalists in order to provide an opportunity to present in details the state of the art, in experiment as well as in theory, and to favor discussions on future experimen tal and theoretical studies.

Book excerpt: Since the third Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" in 1973, one area within the scope of this con ference received increased attention: laser fusion. This possi bility was emphasized in February 1977 in a Seminar on US energy policies at The Hartford Graduate Center by John F. O'Leary, Head of the Federal Energy Administration, who said that "by the year 2100, ••• laser fusion will be coming along, giving us a new age of choice". Efforts in research and development were stepped up to investigate new concepts of laser ignition of controlled nuclear reactions. Here, one expects no radioactive waste from fuel. Th~ deuterium-tritium reaction - the only one which may be possible with magnetic field confinement in tokamaks - has a highly radio active tritium cycle, while, in principle, laser reactions are possible with pure deuterium, hydrogen-boron or others. The worldwide progress in laser compression was not only stim ulated by the energy crisis, but also by its advancements. In our first Workshop in 1969 F. Floux of the French Limeil Laboratories described his experiments, which led, only one month later, to the production of fusion neutrons in such large numbers as had not been achieved up to then (see appendix of Vol. I these Proceedings).

Fast computers and new experimental tools, notably syn chrotron-radiation sources and heavy-ion accelerators, have greatly enhan ced the scope of problems that are accessible. The level of research activity is growing substantially; added incentives are provided by the importance of inner-shell processes in such diverse areas as plasma studies, astrophysics, laser technology, biology, medicine, and materials science. The main reason for all this exciting activity in atomic inner-shell physics, to be sure, lies in the significance of the fundamental problems that are coming within grasp. The large energies of many inner-shell processes cause relativistic and quantum-electrodynamic effects to become strong. Unique opportunities exist for delicate tests of such phenomena as the screening of the electron self-energy and the limits of validity of the present form of the frequency-dependent Breit interaction, to name but two. The many-body problem, which pervades virtually all of physics, presents somewhat less intractable aspects in the atomic inner-shell regime: correlations are relatively weak so that they can be treated perturbatively, and the basic potential is simple and known! The dynamics of inner-shell processes are characterized by exceedingly short lifetimes and high transition rates that strain perturbation theory to its limits and obliterate the traditional separation of excitation and deexcitation. These factors are only now being explored, as are interference phenomena between the various channels.

The machines which produce synchrotron radiation were built and de veloped exclusively for other purposes in the past, namely high-energy physics. At the same time, however, they involuntarily became better and better light sources for the spectral range from the visible to the hard x-ray region. Now we are at the point that the first few storage rings have gone into operation as machines dedicated to synchrotron radiation and several more are in the stage of construction and planning. All this was brought about by the successful research performed during the past fifteen years in which several groups allover the world haVe participated at dif ferent accelerator centers mostly symbiotic with high-energy physics. As it happens with a young and rapidly developing field, the number of reviews and monographs is still minute. The objective of this book is to fill an apparent gap and to provide a sound basis for those who are interested in synchrotron radiation and its applica tions.

Book excerpt: This book contains the transcripts of the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Electrons in Finite and Infinite Structures," held at the State University of Ghent, Belgium, August 30-September 11, 1976. Over the last few years substantial progress has been made in the description and the understanding of the behavior of electrons in extended bodies. This includes the study of the energy spectrum of electrons in large molecules, perfect as well as imperfect crys tals, and disordered alloys. Not only local potential techniques but also the many-body aspects are discussed in detail. As atomic, molecular, and solid state physics involve common techniques and insights, we believe that physicists and chemists active in these fields have benefited from these lectures and the interchange of ideas during the course. The aim of the Institute was to familiarize young scientists in the field with the current state of the art and to indicate in which areas advances may be expected in the near future. The A.S.I. consisted of two parts: detailed instructional and review lectures over the whole period and some evening sessions where the partici pants were offered the opportunity to present their own work and discuss their ideas with senior scientists. Since the Institute took place a few weeks after Prof. Dr. John C. Slater was suddenly taken from our scientific community, it was a great honor for us to dedicate this course, on behalf of the organizing committee, to the late John C. Slater.

A total of one hundred and fifteen scientists attended the workshop, 99 from Europe and 16 from the rest of the world. They discussed the state of the art, new trends, and future evolution of the methods and applications. The workshop was held in the old town of Marly-le-Roi, which lies to the West of Paris between the historic centres of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and Versailles. Participants were housed at the National Youth Institute, where over sixty lectures were given by l- ding members of the scientific community; in addition, over sixty posters were presented in two very animated sessions. We are grateful to the oral speakers and to the poster p- senters for making the workshop such an stimulating experience. The social programme was also memorable – and not just for the closing banquet, which was held at the French Senate House. We are sure that participants will long remember their visit to the 'Musée des Antiquités Nationales': created by Napoleon III at the birthplace of Louis XIV, this museum boasts one of the world finest collections of archeological artifacts.
