Book excerpt: American Youth is a controlled, essential, and powerful tale of a teenager in southern New England who is confronted by a terrible moral dilemma following a fatal firearms accident in his home. This tragedy earns him the unwelcome admiration of a sinister group of boys at his school and a girl associated with them. Set in a town riven by social and ideological tensions – an old rural culture in conflict with newcomers – this is a classic portrait of a young man struggling with the idea of identity and responsibility in an America ill at ease with itself.

Book Empower Zone

Download or read book Empower Zone written by Carolyn Gatz and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uplifting series of photographs by American teens living in neighborhoods of renewal Imagine presents inspiring photographs by forty teenagers living in four communities that are part of government antipoverty programs-in Lowell, Massachusetts; Baltimore, Maryland; the Rio Grande Valley in Texas; and Chicago, Illinois-offering a rare view of community renewal from the inside out. Launched at the end of 1994, the EZ/EC Initiative (named for government empowerment zones and enterprise communities) is a large-scale antipoverty effort in which more than 140 inner-city and rural poor areas have been designated to receive federal dollars for revitalization. EZ/EC wages its battles on many fronts simultaneously: bringing back business and creating jobs for residents, rehabilitating housing, improving education and providing positive opportunities for young people, and restoring safety. Under the guidance of veteran photographer Stephen Shames, forty teens participated in photography workshops run by EZ/EC in 1999. The photographs are accompanied by interviews with the teens, describing the ideas and motivations behind their image-making. The uplifting photographs produced in the workshops demonstrate that it is possible to change lives and revitalize troubled neighborhoods. Imagine also includes Shames's selection of photographic portraits of the teens

Book My Last Day at Seventeen

Download or read book My Last Day at Seventeen written by and published by Aperture. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doug DuBois was first introduced to a group of teenagers from the Russell Heights housing estate while he was an artist-in-residence at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, on the southwest coast of Ireland. He was fascinated by the insular neighborhood, in which "everyone seems to be someone's cousin, former girlfriend, or spouse." Little can happen there that isn't seen, discussed, distorted beyond all reason, and fiercely defended against any disapprobation from the outside. DuBois gained entry when Kevin and Eirn (two participants of a workshop he taught) took him to a local hangout spot, opening his eyes to a world of not-quite-adults struggling -- publicly and privately -- through the last days of their childhood. Over the course of five years, DuBois returned to Russell Heights. People came and left, relationships formed and dissolved, and babies were born. Combining portraits, spontaneous encounters, and collaborative performances, the images in My Last Day at Seventeen exist in a delicate balance between documentary and fiction. A powerful follow-up to DuBois' acclaimed first book, All the Days and Nights, this volume provides an incisive examination ofthe uncertainties of growing up in Ireland today, while highlighting the unique relationship sustained between artist and subject. Exhibition: Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Ireland (10.2015).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-of-its-kind collection presents photographer Karlheinz Weinberger’s influential portraits of rebel youth of the sixties. While Karlheinz Weinberger is known as a pioneer of male erotic imagery, the Swiss amateur photographer also left an indelible mark on the fashion world with his decades-long documenting of vibrant rebel youth culture. These working-class teenagers created looks that fused iconic American pop culture imagery—biker jackets, denim jeans, bouffant hairdos, James Dean insouciance—with their own idiosyncratic sensibilities. From the late 1950s through the ’60s, Weinberger captured the defiant glamour of these youths with a keen eye for their provocative handmade designs. Inspired by the rebel youth’s pop playfulness and fierce individuality, a legion of contemporary fashion-industry leaders have been profoundly influenced by the photographs collected in this stunning volume.

Book Urban Youth and Photovoice

Download or read book Urban Youth and Photovoice written by Melvin Delgado and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade brought forth a wave of excitement and promise for researchers and practitioners interested in community practice as an approach based on social justice principles and an embrace of community participatory actions. But, effective community practice is predicated on the availability and use of assessment methods that not only capture and report on conditions, but also simultaneously set the stage for social change efforts. This research, therefore, serves the dual purpose of generating knowledge and also being an integral part of social intervention. Research done in this way, however, requires new tools. Photovoice is one such tool - a form of visual ethnography that invites participants to represent their community or point of view through photographs, accompanied by narratives, to be shared with each other and with a broader community. Urban Youth and Photovoice focuses on the use of this method within urban settings and among adolescents and young adults - a group that is almost naturally drawn to the use of photography (especially digital and particularly in today's era of texting, facebook, and instagram) to showcase photovoice as an important qualitative research method for social workers and others in the social sciences, and providing readers with detailed theoretical and practical account of how to plan, implement, and evaluate the results of a photovoice project focused on urban youth.

Download or read book Portable Studio written by Trevor Appleson and published by Booth-Clibborn. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An exploration of youth and identity created by photographer Trevor Appleson in a dialogue with his young sitters, told through his portraits and their personal archives of digital and material ephemera. The resulting archive is a fascinating insight into contemporary youth culture. In 2014, Trevor Appleson took to the streets of Birmingham, UK with his portable studio, photographing young people as they shopped, partied, studied and hung-out. He followed up with a series of conversations with his subjects, exploring youth and identity through material culture. Over a period of a year Appleson invited them to create their own archives using what was important to them. The result is a fascinating mix of the physical and the digital from crumpled diaries to blog pages, from memory boxes to online search histories, offering a unique insight into the lives of the different sitters and their culture. Portable Studio inverts the traditional idea of the studio portrait/street photograph - the snapshot now a starting point from which to develop multi-faceted and paradoxically intimate representations of identity."--
