Book excerpt: In 2014 Alan J. Ward purchased a collection of 'quarter plate' glass negatives on a whim, from an Ebay seller in Brighton, that had no provenance. There are about 230 in total, dating from 1914 through to the 50s. Through a few clues offered up in the images and the original boxes they came in, he pieced together the beginnings of a substantial lost family history, that seemed strangely to parallel his own.

Book Find Another Place

Download or read book Find Another Place written by Ben Graff and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'Families are their stories,' said my grandfather Martin that late autumn day in 2001, as he placed a clear plastic folder containing his journal into my hands." Part historical meditation on people now gone, part detective story and journey of discovery, Find Another Place speaks to how we remember and re-assess what has gone before and how we make sense both of our here and now and the future. Ben’s grandfather had always wanted to be a writer and gave the author his journal shortly before his death. After many endings, paper often remains. Letters from his parents written in the 1970s before they were married, together with a handful of poems, extracts from diaries and other materials all form part of this reflection. It is possible to get to know people better, even after they are gone. A family’s interactions with the Isle of Wight, in war and peace, happy times and sad, run through the narrative. As does a relationship with literature, the desire to write and a passion for the game of chess. Anyone who has ever lost a parent; had a child or reflected on the fragility and beauty inherent in everyday life will enjoy this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bronson Tullis is a highly successful London art dealer, specialising in the semi-clandestine world of antiquities. His life appears to be on a roll until he is led to Italy by an enigmatic Italian woman, where he is shown a black marble sculpture of Aphrodite that has been dredged up from the sea. He instantly recognises it from a recent disturbing dream. Deeply unnerved by this strange coincidence, despite his sense of misgiving, he cannot resist buying the statue. From this point on Bronson experiences a series of totally unexpected setbacks: his ex-wife suddenly dies, leaving him an excoriating letter that punctures his view of their failed relationship; a brief visit to an isolated Greek island produces events that run counter to his sense of reality. The black statue is stopped at the border whilst being smuggled out of Italy. With the threat of prison closing in, Bronson is plunged into a deep and terrifying breakdown, where he has to face the superficiality and egoism of his old way of life. A soul-searching trip back to the Greek island triggers his struggle to come to terms with his own dark places.

Book excerpt: Contending that many good poets live and write in the American West, Andrew Elkins suggests that the western landscape--be it New Mexico desert or Alaskan wilderness--shapes the work that is created there. The place's essence and spirit inevitably become part of the work that flows from the poet's creativity. Elkins examines the work of Peggy Pond Church, John Haines, Adrian C. Louis, Richard Hugo, Jane Hirshfield, and several cowboy poets. --Texas Christian University Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully written account of an idyllic childhood. Told in the first person against the milieu of show business, bounds of freedom and family idiosyncrasies. If only things were so straight forward. Instead this recount of the lifes transitions is juxtaposed against the backdrop of the second world war, bringing into question a sense of identity, belonging and loyalties. The author cleverly takes the reader along a cathartic journey of making sense of the past . Are we tied up and restricted by our history or do these events just pave the way towards what we are able to achieve?

Book One Place after Another

Download or read book One Place after Another written by Miwon Kwon and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2004-02-27 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s. Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing commodification of art and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy and universality. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as site-specific art intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, and public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work and its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of unrepeatability and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged by new models of site specificity and changes in institutional and market forces. One Place after Another offers a critical history of site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between location and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser, Donald Judd, Renee Green, Suzanne Lacy, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Richard Serra, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and Fred Wilson.

Book Another Place You ve Never Been

Download or read book Another Place You ve Never Been written by Rebecca Kauffman and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "undeniably moving and emotionally true" debut novel offers the emotional complexity and narrative scope of A Visit from the Goon Squad and resonates with the strong mystical nature of Swamplandia (Publishers Weekly, starred review). Most of us have experienced what it’s like to know what someone is going to say right before they say it. Or perhaps you have been shocked by the irrefutable phenomena of coincidence, when your life intersects with another’s in the most unlikely way. In gripping prose marked by stark simplicity, Another Place You’ve Never Been by debut novelist Rebecca Kauffman explores the intersection of human experience amidst the minutiae of everyday life. In her mid-thirties and still living in her hometown Buffalo, NY, Tracy spends most days at the restaurant where she works as a hostess, despite her aspirations of a career that would make use of her creative talents. Tracy’s life is explored not only though her own personal point of view, but also through the viewpoints of other characters, wherein Tracy may only make a peripheral appearance or even emerge at different periods in her life. At its core, Another Place You've Never Been is a broad investigation of such bold ideas as the possibility that any person, at any time, in any place, could find themselves shivering in the presence of great and ancient forces; and the notion that love is perhaps "far less voluntary" than we might believe it to be.
