Book The Perfect School Picture

Download or read book The Perfect School Picture written by Deborah Diesen and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s picture day, and the boy at the center of this charming story wants to make sure his picture is perfect. It seems as though everything’s going wrong for him—he has bedhead, a stained shirt, and a big scowl on his face. But when he goes up for his picture, he thinks about his terrible appearance, and he smiles—because he secretly wants his picture to be the worst ever taken! But just as he smiles, the photo is snapped, and his plan is ruined when he takes a totally adorable picture. Perfectly paired with the larger-than-life silliness of Dan Santat’s illustrations, this is a sweet and funny picture book about a classic school moment. Praise"The narrator’s over-the-top voice makes reading aloud a must . . . high-energy comedy that involves only minor destruction."— Publishers Weekly

Download or read book Photography in Children s Literature written by Elina Druker and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography in Children’s Literature is the first study that examines the wide array of artistic techniques, topics, and genres used within photographic books for children. Covering a time period from the 1870s to the 1980s, the collection offers multifaceted insights into changing perceptions of children and childhood during an era when the world changed in unprecedented ways. More than sixty full-color illustrations demonstrate an impressive variety of genres, from ABC books, concept books, and country portraits to photo reportage and poetry. By discussing photographic books from ten countries and three continents, the collection offers an international scope, providing a glimpse into the production and reception of photography in children’s literature in a range of contexts and cultures. Photographic books for children thus open up new vistas for scholars interested in an interdisciplinary and transnational investigation of children’s literature, text and images, across the centuries.

Book excerpt: While the crisis that took place in photojournalism during the 1960's brought about a significant shift in the practices, discourses and institutional structures of press photography, it also affected the practices of artists, specifically with regard to work devoted to revitalizing the depiction of events. The art world attempted to revitalize the historical genre by undertaking its critical rereading, in the spirit of restoring a tradition diminished by the mass media. The problem may be expressed in these terms: How can history be depicted, bearing in mind that the media (mainly photojournalism and the electronic press) have claimed a monopoly of the genre unto themselves? At issue is the sizeable problem of mass media omnipotence as an obligatory referential universe for historiographical artistic practices. Today, it seems impossible to depict the event in any way other than by accentuating or eschewing the formal attributes, rhetorical artifices, and ideological precepts of the mass media. These approaches to addressing historical moments have been examined in this article both because they epitomize contemporary historical writing and, for the most part, they constitute critical responses to stereotyped depictions of events. Above all, they represent a paradigm shift: the mass media's prerogatives for depicting historical moments has shifted towards the field of art. Contemporary depictions of catastrophe - crimes, sensationalist news items, terrorist attacks, humanitarian disasters, genocides - (common themes in many of the artistic projects represented in the 8th edition of the Mois de la Photo a Montreal} have been especially striking in this respect. For of all contemporary events, catastrophes are the most likely to be spontaneously propelled to the top of the news - roster and the most susceptible to the various inflections of contemporary art photography.

Book Humanitarianism and Media

Download or read book Humanitarianism and Media written by Johannes Paulmann and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Christian missionary publications to the media strategies employed by today’s NGOs, this interdisciplinary collection explores the entangled histories of humanitarianism and media. It traces the emergence of humanitarian imagery in the West and investigates how the meanings of suffering and aid have been constructed in a period of evolving mass communication, demonstrating the extent to which many seemingly new phenomena in fact have long historical legacies. Ultimately, the critical histories collected here help to challenge existing asymmetries and help those who advocate a new cosmopolitan consciousness recognizing the dignity and rights of others.

Book Rania Matar L Enfant Femme

Download or read book Rania Matar L Enfant Femme written by Lois Lowry and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world of endless photographing, tagging, and posting images online, what is a preteen girl's relationship to the camera? Upending assumptions of contemporary digital image-making practices, photographer Rania Matar reframes these young women through her poignant portraits of them, revealing in 'L'Enfant-Femme' how girls between the ages of 8 and 12 interact with the camera and in so doing depicts them in deeply personal and poetic ways. Addressing themes of representation, voyeurism, and transgression, Matar's images remind us of the fragility of yough while also gesturing towards its unbridled curiosity and joy. Candidly capturing her subjects at a critical juncture in the early stages of adolescence, Matar's images convey the confluence of angst, sexuality, and personhood that defines the progression from childhood into adulthood.
